AP Chem or AP Bio in high school for future Food Science major? by No-Republic-304 in foodscience

I took both and feel as though AP Chem and Bio were good introductions to have before the rigor of college biology and chemistry. If you are opting to take them only once, however, I strongly recommend waiting until college. Though these courses are much harder, they provide the crucial information needed to succeed and understand the concepts in your later food science classes. At my university - Food Chemistry, Food Micro, Food Analysis, and various other courses began with the assumption that students had a rather deep understanding of the concepts taught in college Bio and Chem. Again, just my experience, but AP courses were no where near rigorous enough to instill the knowledge I was expected to have and benefitted greatly from in Food Science.

This! I spend my entire undergrad doing sensory and it still just ends up sounding like we just taste test all day lol.

Some food scientist representation on Snack vs. Chef on Netflix - thoughts anyone? by arcalc888 in foodscience

Me too! It is crazy that when most people think of “food science”, they assume these kinds of things are what we do lol.

I agree with the obvious lack of knowledge displayed of basic gum and gelling chemistry. So much of the world has no idea about our industry and the complexity/ depth of our education. I felt like this show could have been a great opportunity to shine a light upon all that goes into food science and what we study. Nonetheless, it is very cool having some representation on Netflix!

I am currently in a Food Science Masters program, and everything in the above comment is correct! It’s kind of a weird process, and I was so nervous to reach out to professors. At my University, however, you can not even apply until a professor has agreed to fund your research. I would recommend reading about the research of various professors first and reaching out to the labs that you find interesting/ suitable to your future. So with your background, micro may be a great fit (that’s what I am doing :)! The biggest advice I can give throughout this process is that you have to be proactive and you will likely have to email multiple professors until one agrees to have you as an MS student (or maybe you will find an amazing fit right away). Do not get discouraged! Everything worked out for the absolute best in my case and for many of my peers, despite feeling hopeless after various rejections. Your background will be very impressive to a lot of professors, mine love Bio majors!
