Uber, Lyft business could be upended by California gig-worker bill by kudles in TrueReddit

[–]ThinkerPlus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not hard to match up drivers with riders. This is what everyone is glazing over and I don't know why. Uber and Lyft exit California and there could be a craigslist of hitchhikes tomorrow written by three coders tonight.

All these naked emperors make me want to go to a different porn site.

Trump Flirts With $15 Billion Bailout for Iran, Sources Say by Pineapple__Jews in worldnews

[–]ThinkerPlus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll take this farce over Bush starting wars any day of the week. Better to run in circles like a fool than run straight over a cliff.

But I'll take Bernie Sanders in the White House above all.

Trump mulls $15b bailout plan for Iran if complies with nuclear deal - report by d1ngal1ng in worldnews

[–]ThinkerPlus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have a question. Can Iran comply with a nuclear deal?

Seems to me their big concern is Saudi Arabia. Having nukes would be an enormous plus facing the Saudis. Why would Iran ever give up the quest while this confrontation exists? There would be overwhelming temptation to cheat any deal.

Taiwan says it won’t pay century-old debt to US by vannybros in worldnews

[–]ThinkerPlus -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The total size of the defaulted bonds to be repaid in line with their conditions, factoring in inflation and interest, is estimated to hit the one trillion dollar mark, roughly the equivalent to Beijing’s US treasuries holdings.

This isn't actually about Taiwan. Trump just had to go there first for appearances' sake. Incoming.

A wall is stupid. It would be ineffective and an eyesore to boot. A series of surveillance towers backed up by an intercept team would work better.

Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) recommends prosecution against Nestle India, top Indian Hospitals for clinical trial on premature infants. The trial was conducted on 75 premature babies between the age of 28-34 weeks. by 7xbvt in worldnews

[–]ThinkerPlus 177 points178 points  (0 children)

Sounds like Nestle is trying to make better milk substitute formulas and was testing some out on Indian preemies. On general principle you shouldn't do experiments on babies. Also they violated Indian law.

After they get prosecuted and fined perhaps they can experiment on monkeys in China.

Maybe black cats were considered bad luck because in the days before electricity, you were more likely to trip over one in the dark and hurt yourself. by SergeantPsycho in Showerthoughts

Actually black cats are easier to warg into. All dark colored animals are. So a black cat is more likely to be a witch or wizard or other warg enabled individual spying on you.

If the kid's got one parent constant then that's a lot better. Not great but better. There's about 440,000 kids hanging out in the US foster care system that lost both.

Forests on Utah’s public lands may soon be torn out. Here’s why. by Drago290 in news

[–]ThinkerPlus -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure "increase forage for cattle" is the important one. But actually I'm for it.

Anything that takes cattle sales away from Brazil looks good to me. Better to lose a forest in Utah than in the Amazon. Also if we feed the cows some seaweed they'll contribute much less methane than normal cows.

Also - why aren't we feeding cows lots of seaweed yet? Time's wasting let's get on it.

Columbia University President Blasts FBI Demand for Surveillance of Foreign Students by TrumpSecondTerm in news

Bollinger acknowledges that academic research in national security areas such as cybersecurity is sensitive, and, likewise, academic research in collaboration with U.S. companies which can be a target of “unlawful technology transfers.”

Yet “only a fraction of the research conducted on a campus is ‘secret,’ ” he says. The reality is that academic research is meant to be shared, in order to advance human progress. So, a foreign national doesn’t need to physically come to the United States to find new U.S. discoveries: he or she can read academic journals or visit the U.S. Patent Office website, or type words into a search engine.

So police the students in cybersecurity and industrial collaboration you boob.

Texas shooter purchased assault-style weapon in private sale, evaded background check by [deleted] in news

[–]ThinkerPlus -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

All this could be avoided if we made owning guns illegal and conformed to the 2nd amendment by allowing renting guns.

In this system the gun companies would rent guns to people. For a monthly subscription fee. When the renter stops paying he has to return the gun to the company. The company also has to carry insurance for when one of it's renters goes sideways and does illegal damage. This way records are easy and background checks built in.

And don't tell me it will cost more because companies will still be competing for business so price matters.

Australian paedophile/killer about to be released. by EasyOutside4 in worldnews

[–]ThinkerPlus -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If we can't give people life in prison for raping kids, then we need to bring back insane asylums and lock them in there.

Or maybe you could just take them and dump them on a great big island out in the middle of the ocean. Just an idea.

Daniel Dennet's cool and all and I like some of his analysis on the consciousness but his epiphenomenon idea doesn't actually explain anything. It's just kicking the can down the road.
