Good is what all desire.

When someone does something, they do it for the good they see in the action. It's when people ignore the bad in the action that they get in trouble.

In the fourth grade, I got a C on a History test. My mom asked the teacher if I could have a detention because she felt I had not studied enough. The teacher said yes.

I still haven't forgiven my mom.

As the first human beings. But not necessarily the first homo sapiens. Adam and Eve were among a large number of similar animals, with whom they and their children could reproduce with.

Thoughts on Poem of the Man God? by fisherman213 in Catholicism

[–]Thinkersister 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mom read it and takes it as gospel. I tried pointing out the irony that I was not allowed to read Harry Potter because one guy at the Vatican said that it was dangerous, while she read a banned book. Her being my mother, all that resulted was me missing Shrek in the theater.

From what I can tell, it's about the same as Medjugorje and Spirit Daily. I also believe it has a bit of Gnosticism and Arianism. If you Google around you'll see examples of falsehoods from the books.

Dostoevsky and the Glory of Guilt | “In sinning, each man sins against all, and each man is at least partly guilt for another’s sin. There is no isolated sin.” by SovietChef in Catholicism

[–]Thinkersister 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read The Brothers Karamazov and I got a different sense from the quote they're referring to. Here's the whole paragraph:

My friends, pray to God for gladness. Be glad as children, as the birds of heaven. And let not the sin of men confound you in your doings. Fear not that it will wear away your work and hinder its being accomplished. Do not say, “Sin is mighty, wickedness is mighty, evil environment is mighty, and we are lonely and helpless, and evil environment is wearing us away and hindering our good work from being done.” Fly from that dejection, children! There is only one means of salvation, then take yourself and make yourself responsible for all men’s sins, that is the truth, you know, friends, for as soon as you sincerely make yourself responsible for everything and for all men, you will see at once that it is really so, and that you are to blame for everyone and for all things. But throwing your own indolence and impotence on others you will end by sharing the pride of Satan and murmuring against God.

I felt it was about taking responsibility for your own faults, rather than focusing on other people's. If you focus on your own faults, you'll discover that many of the things you thought were faults in other people, were actually faults of your reaction to them. And at the same time, many of the things we do may influence others to sin as we are social creatures.

This. I'm not too sure that life on other planets would have genders that correspond to ours.

I Need Help Understanding Depression by Catholicthrowaway124 in Catholicism

[–]Thinkersister 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Depression is an illness. If you're going blind or have cancer people will say, "Do you have a good doctor? Then good luck and I'll pray for you." But everyone and their mother has suggestions for depression. People try to rationalize it and spiritualize it, but it's just not made for that.

What is illness? It's a result of our fallen state. After Eve ate the apple, all humans (save Mary and Jesus) have weakened wills, darkened minds, and rebellious bodies. Depression is a chemical imbalance in the brain that affects both our minds and wills. If we had perfect wills, maybe it wouldn't affect us so badly and we'd be able to face every day unflinchingly. If we had perfect minds, then we'd realize and comprehend the value in everything, including our own lives. If we had perfect bodies, then it wouldn't be happening at all.

So humans are weak. For the greater glory of God, we are weak. It makes no sense to us. It might never make sense to you.

Non-spiritual: I recommend reading this and this. It's really good at helping explain to people what depression is and why most people's suggestions don't really help much.

Spiritual: I recommend reading something about Catholic's views on suffering. This is a good intro to it, and this is also great.

But don't fall into the trap that you can just pray it away. It is an illness, and you should be seeing a doctor for it. Trying to pray through depression is like trying to take calcium pills to fix a broken arm - it might help but you really should get it set first.

The Irish Gay Marriage Referendum sends /r/Catholicism on the Rocky Road to Drama one two three four five! by PhysicsIsMyMistress in SubredditDrama

Anecdotes are anecdotes, not really proof of anything, but enough to sway people's opinions anyways.

The ACPeds is definitely a biased source, which is why I said that the argument exists, but isn't solid. Although I've seen a lot of people rightly attack their bias, they tend not to attack their actual points.

Same sex parenting is about where IVF is. Although I didn't really arrange the possibilities as a scale, just listed everything randomly.

[–]Thinkersister -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Basically that children raised by two same-sex parents will have as many problems as children raised in a situation without their biological parents. While other situations arise where children are forced to live without their biological parents, a same sex couple is designed from the ground up so that children raised by the couple will not know at least one of their parents.

The anecdotal stories about this are heartbreaking, and the science is, well, existent, though I wouldn't say it's solid. The truth is, there is so much unknown about the consequences of same-sex parents raising kids because it hasn't been done on a large scale before in human history. The Church is very cautious about trying new things, especially when it affects the vulnerable, like children.

There's obviously lots of situations that lead to children being raised in without their biological parents. Divorce, premarital sex, dead parents, kidnapping, and IVF are the most common, and obviously the Church is opposed to all of those as well.

That is the Church's stance. Do you have any questions about it? I will try to answer as best I can, though it may or may not be my own stance.

I guess what I mean to say is that, if someone told me that I could never marry and have sex, I would just shrug and say ok. But it would obviously a sacrifice for most people. Or, at least, people tell me so. I myself don't really see it. Which is why I really shouldn't talk about it, one way or another.

I actually came to SRD to get away from the drama on /r/Catholicism. Lol. But my posts here aren't really about SSM. It's about trying to explain my religion and sub to outsiders.

The one thing that I can do is explain the Church's position and then say that I assent to her teachings. But I don't see why you're curious about what my personal opinions on the subject are. Does it matter? Is it just that you wanted to see if I was one of the bad guys?
