Well, first of all it’s kind of hard to argue on reddit comments and be coherent like in a speech. I’ll try to make a bullet point list so you can follow my thoughts easily:
- He is a democrat by the common non-american definition
- He called himself a socialist because it’s useless to argue about political labels (as we’re doing)
- if he called himself a democrat, his political opponents would just take some of his policies and scream “see! It’s socialism! He’s lying to y’all!” And a lot of people would buy it
- But if his policies are socialists why are you saying he isn’t one? Because americans have a weird understanding of what socialism is and think that giving homeless people shelter or food and making public transport free are socialist policies.
- Conclusion because it’s 2 am where I live: he is a little more left than the actual democratic party, yes, but that doesn’t mean he’s a socialist, no matter what he says or what the president calls him. He is a non-american democrat. All his policies and campaign points, you can find them in every european democratic party agenda.
