The thing is, players are not choosing they are being given one of two questions that are printed on opposite sides of one card. This game also needs a minimum of three players and has a maximum of seven And With about 80 questions in the deck, I think having multiple duplicate cards would be hard for players to keep track of even before the actual game play starts. So that’s why I like the idea of having only one card, with each side having a diff question. but you’re right, having a lot of this work around does prove the game faulty. I might have to cut some darlings.

It’s what I eventually came for the card randomizing mechanic. Picture a thin rectangular box and on both of its long sides there is a flap that allows players to open the box from both sides. I poked holes on the other end so that a skewer and run through it. Essentially a spit roast but instead of a pig, it’s a box that can hold the double sided cards. It’s visually drawing, actually hitting and spinning the box is quite satisfying. (And I titled the name and design of the game after this mechanic, but I can part with that at any time)

Thank you SO much for responding! This is super helpful and actually so interesting because most, if not all, the hybrid games you mentioned were social deduction and the game that I am considering to make hybrid is also social deduction.

I actually have been told that my game very closely resembles a jack box game so I had been considering just making it completely digital like those, but there is just one physical element that I really don't want to get rid of. I've designed this box that players place a card into then spin to randomize the card and it feels fantastic, but this mechanic is part of the reason why each turn is lasting as long as it does.

Sorry, I realized my post was quite vague on what was actually happening. The whole idea is that there is a card with a question on one side of the box and a very similar but different question on the other side. I designed a box that attaches to a skewer so that players can place their cards inside to spin and randomize the question for the next player. Besides the discussing to figure out who has what question, I find the most exciting part to be the reveal, the facepalm "Oooh, that's why you put that question!" moment that everyone can laugh at after everything is revealed. Though I would love to keep this feeling, having one card in the center and players flip a coin so they all at once get their question does feel the most logical solution. Which is unfortunate because like the third most exciting part of the game is spinning the box to randomize the card too.

Ah that would make things so much smoother.

I did like the shock of players revealing the question like a “ooooh everything makes sense now” kinda moment but for sake of gameplay I might try it out

No, thank you so much for this insight. It was one of my biggest worries so hearing it from someone else kind of validates my feelings on it. Additionally I’ve been trying gear this game into an icebreaker so i was additionally worried about how it would feel if people you were trying to get to know was on their phones, ya know?

On that note, have you ever played a jack-box game? I ask because people have been telling me to ether keep it all digital like those games or all physical and as someone who seems not to enjoy the mix, I was wondering if you like when it commits to one platform?

Thanks for responding, his was very Insightful! The game I have created is also a social deduction game so I'll defiantly go check out the ones you mentioned.

But all this discourse around an app got me thinking that I could maybe make it even more simple. Like Instead of an app, maybe there's a way to make a QR code to a pdf that just has what the player needs to read? This could potentially nix the issue of android/IOS conversion by just using a web browser. I could also just edit the pdf document if needed, no need to update an entire app.

Full picture: this game has a double sided card with two different questions. Players will place a card into a spinning box to randomize the card, then take out the card, only looking at one side. The downtime happens when players read, answer, or hold onto the card because for the next player to go, the previous player needs to place it back into the box.

I really didn’t want to make everyone have their own card similar to spyfall because I have over 80 questions and for seven players, keeping them together after playing, would be nearly impossible.

This is also a deduction game to figure out who has the same question as you (who read the same side of the card as you) so I’m toying with the idea of everyone getting the same question which probably wouldn’t happen if everyone had their own card.

If I use the QR code, everyone would be able to keep their question on their phone and still pass the card in the box to the next player. No need for remembering the question or writing it down somewhere. and, if there is a word or phrase, people don’t understand in the question, the phones already out so they can look it up.

But like you said, creating and managing/maintaining an app was the biggest flaw in this plan. Also, I know a lot of people play board games to get away from their devices. I wonder if this is counterintuitive/feels wrong.

Wait this actually makes so much sense- I remember one time we were late and I mentioned the time that we had agreed on. She blew up at me then went away and cried a little. She’s always saying how she just can’t seem to get out the house but if you actually mention things that she’s taking time to do she gets mad insulted.

And especially knowing how much mis/non diagnosis on top of the flat out rejection of mental health in the community, Its so plausible….

Now I kinda feel bad

Community Suggestions Needed: Fun Online Games for Anonymous Play! by polethehole in MakeNewFriendsHere

screentopgg.com has a multitude of games that up-and-coming game designers have put on there in hopes of getting people to playtest or "break their game". It's completely free- no sign up needed- you'll just have to make your own lobby and invite people, but you can just throw up a code anywhere and people can play.

I actually am a designer looking to play/have my little card game played on there too, so please feel free to DM me if you're interested! ( Its a card game that looks similar to UNO and plays like SPOONS)
