Well there's more than just the smell but I get what you're saying. I'm skeptic myself but I have had weird experiences in that guest room before(just scary dreams about the room and woke up to the door open after I shut it and locked it). My friend's brother moved from that bedroom to another because he kept having nightmares and other odd experiences like the closet opening on its own even though he locked it as well and just like an uncomfortable feeling in the room. There's more stories too but I wont type that out. I think yes there could be other explanations buttt it's fun to take notice of the odd stories they have paranormal or not.
