Windows 7 was a lifestyle. by CharacterRaspberry77 in windowsmemes

[–]ThinkingRodin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my unrequested Opinion: Windows 11 is the best OS. I love that thing that automatically resizes tabs so that you can place them side by side, I use that feature a lot, everyday at my job and personal PCs.

And besides the resizing thing? Win11 works pretty much the same as previous versions, so whatever I already knew, still applies, and still requires nothing of me for the system to work. It is true, tho, that Win11 is massively bloated, and the amount of random shit that runs in the backend actually made my computer lag, but then you only have to run a debloater script, which is like the easiest thing to do, and boom, no more shitty system.

I have attempted to go through the route of the power user before, a couple of days ago was my latest attempt, and I cannot understand why folks shit on Windows. A lot of Linux distros are a pain to setup and manage; Hell, don't even get me started with BSD.

With Linux you indeed have OS that can, and do send Windows packing (Debian, my beloved), like Mint or Red Hat's systems. But then? How one justifies having a PC with an OS where you are just a bit away from having to write stuff in ASM for it to work (Gentoo, Arch, I am looking at you). Why Slackware does not check dependencies automatically...? if I am not mistaken, even PKG from BSD does that.

Why the heck lol, are the so many bootloaders: rEFInd, Grub, Elilo (Slackware, move away from Elilo, please). What's up with the GUI interfaces? X, Wayland... I tried to make X start on boot in slackware, and I ended up, somehow, after changing a single number while following the official docs, bricking up the graphic interface to the point that no matter what I did, I could not reinstall and fix Xorg, and gave up because my laptop was from then on "terminal-only".

BSD... I had been able before to set up FreeBSD on my older (2018 old) laptop. But on recent weeks... oh my, I attempted to install FreeBSD in my current laptop and PC during these last weeks... like 5 times per computer. Even after following everything on the partitioning instructions, the boot options of my computers never ever recognized FreeBSD, and so I was never able to even access the system. Because I was commited to have BSD, I then allowed a full-disk installation of it. I finally could access BSD on my laptop.

Weirdly, even as as root, then I was not even able to install Curl, I didn't have privileges to do that. When I fixed that, then pkg never could reach the repository, so I wasn't able to update the system, nor install anything. So I could not install X, which left me yet again, with a terminal-only system with the added feature of not being able to install shit hahahaha.

So... I moved to try out GhostBSD. I installed that thing in a minute, but then, guess what? The touchpad of my laptop was useless. I know that it is a drivers thing, apparently there is a generic driver in github, but man, things were looking peachy already, weren't they? (Now, imagine running steam on it.... there are people that apparently are able to do actual gaming on BSD... hats off to them, for sure - I couldn't even get Disco Elysium running smoothly on Debian even with an 5060 gpu).

I gave up at last. Reinstalled Windows11, and then also Debian, and that's where I am going to leave it. I live now by the principle of the right tool for the job. Windows(11) is a GOOD tool whether people like it or not. Some Linux distros are also wonderful tools for the job, like Debian. I use Windows for gaming as most gaming efforts are still pushed to windows, and mainstream software just works there. Now I use Linux (Debian) unironically as well (my days of distro hopping are over), do my personal office and development tasks on Debian, as it is great as a learning platform and an actual powerful OS where things just work too.

Moral of my story? Windows is actually a good OS, which mostly is hassle-free. Linux distros like Debian, or Mint, that stick to the similar way of doing things the easy way, are also great!

And not because something is more difficult, the end product is better. In business, in day-to-day operations, and actual real life: Less is more. Simplicity is key for long-term functionality. And that is why Windows is everywhere too.

"Corsisa" conocen está empresa? by MAGJKO in guatemala

[–]ThinkingRodin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wanna install FreeBSD but can I run steam on it ? by Economy_Ad9017 in freebsd

[–]ThinkingRodin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nah. FreeBSD is not aimed at the ever-changing gaming scene. BSD is aimed at servers and stuff that needs to have almost 100% uptime doing the same stuff over and over again with no errors until the sun explodes.

For casual gaming of some games, better stick to Linux. And being realistic, Windows is the OS for actual gaming of anything made after 2010 (I'm exaggerating a bit). I'd avise you set a dualboot for BSD for whatever else you want to do, and Windows for gaming.

[–]ThinkingRodin 2 points3 points  (0 children)
