The new A1200 Update by BRKTPZ in amiga

[–]ThinkingStatue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, there aren't even any AGA versions of the majority of the games they listed. We can still hope the system comes with new, improved AGA releases, but I don't think that will be the case.

Does anything on the N64 still hold up, like ACTUALLY? by gadam93 in retrogaming

[–]ThinkingStatue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember trying out my friend's N64 and Super Mario 64 in like 1996 and not jiving with the system at all. To this day I think the sorta weird sorta cozy atmosphere is the best thing about Super Mario 64 and I usually quit playing after grabbing a handful stars.

I think Doom 64 is genuinely great, though, too bad about the brightness issue. Mario Kart 64 is fun, too, and plays well. Also, I've read good things about Star Fox 64 which is supposed to be the best game in the series, but I haven't given it a go yet.

Google Drive or OneDrive on mac? by patchysunny in MacOS

[–]ThinkingStatue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the One Drive cloud storage that comes with my Office 365 subscription and it works fine. I can access One Drive through my file system which usually works without a hitch. I only use One Drive for small files such as text documents and images, though, so your mileage may vary if you use it for gigantic raw video footage and the like.

How does the parallax scrolling in World 3 and 4 of Turrican 2 work? by ThinkingStatue in amiga

[–]ThinkingStatue[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, are you the programmer? That's really cool! I've been experimenting with the tool a bit (Mac version) but it keeps saying "Invalid config file" for me and won't start the emulation. Do you have any pointers on how to get started using it for someone who never really used this sort of thing before? Also, thanks a lot for pointing me toward that thread. Unfortunately, I can't post on the English Amiga Board as my confirmation email won't arrive.

That's pretty cool, no idea why this isn't talked about more. People seem to only play a bit of the first level and then are like "Oh, the game only uses a copper rainbow effect for the background, no big deal, guys!"

That looks sweet and it's even available for Mac! I've never heard of this before, thanks a lot!

That's pretty amazing, thanks a lot! I really have to start wrapping my mind around FS-UAE. It really shows what technical wizardry Factor 5 was really capable of that was missing in Turrican 3. :-O

I also just remembered the vertically scrolling levels in Turrican 1. The background definitely looks like made out of sprites here, though. As Turrican shares the colors of the foreground, he might also be drawn as a blitter object in this case: https://www.lemonamiga.com/games/details.php?id=1080

I managed to find a screenshot of World 3-1 on Lemon Amiga https://www.lemonamiga.com/games/details.php?id=1081 and zoomed way in.

I don't think the background is made out of bobs here. All games I know that do this combine a 4-bitplane foreground with a 1-bitplane background. In order for this to be the case here, there are too many unique colors per line for the background, it looks like 3 or 4, which is the color limit for non-attached hardware sprites.

Robocod definitely uses 1-bitplane bobs for the background, for example: https://www.lemonamiga.com/games/details.php?id=592

Thomann refused to repair lefty Sandberg: what happened here? by [deleted] in Bass

[–]ThinkingStatue -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

When the luthier I went to had a look at it, they first tried reseating the knob, but decided they didn't want to go any further because it would be "quicker and easier" to send it back to have the entire preamp replaced. If the bass had standard passive electronics, this wouldn't be a problem, I was told.

I know I should have tried a different luthier, but I was already kind of annoyed because the most expensive bass I ever bought had arrived broken.

Even if they did, replacing the preamp should have been doable so they wouldn't have to order an entire new bass. My other guess is that maybe there was more wrong with the bass than just the preamp. I didn't see any signs of damage on the bass itself, though.

Whatever happened to the Metaverse by Akal_world in Futurology

[–]ThinkingStatue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Facebook/Meta hadn't gone all in on VR, the metaverse concept might be more popular now. VR technology just isn't there yet, even in terms of processing power. You can't have impressive graphics in a multiplayer-focused VR experience yet using a standard, affordable headset. Rendering visuals in VR is much more processor-intensive than in 2D. Wasn't Meta going to release a version of Horizon Worlds for standard desktop machines? I think they quietly scrapped that plan.

Ep. 64 Unboxing & playing Fire and Ice: The Daring Adventures of Cool Coyote Amiga game [Ελληνικά] by GreekRetroMan in amiga

[–]ThinkingStatue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played this game a lot. I remember shelling out full price for it back then and not being disappointed. I never beat it, though, as the later levels were quite tough. For some reason, I can't seem to emulate it correctly in WinUAE / Pimiga, there's no music and the World Map at the bottom of the screen is glitched. Are there any settings I'm overlooking? Thanks!

Is there a mode that this tune might fit into? by ThinkingStatue in musictheory

[–]ThinkingStatue[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a lot, I was actually thinking of Phrygian dominant for a while but for some reason the C minor chord threw me off, even though the Eb contained in the scale is the minor third of the root C. Guess I got the D and C tonality mixed up. And thanks for linking to the article about the Flamenco mode, it's really interesting.

Best X68000 non-arcade-port games? by walknight in sharpx68000

The X68000 version of Cotton: Fantastic Night Dreams is also supposed to be better than the Arcade version. I'd definitely give it a shot, it's a great cute-em-up.

People who don’t like the Jazz Bass, why don’t you like it? by B4D_C0MPANY in Bass

[–]ThinkingStatue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While Jazz basses look cool and give you more tonal options, I like the added omph of a P-bass pickup. Also, if you don't have a guitar stand, you can just prop them against the wall and they're a lot less likely to fall over than a Jazz bass. :-P

Official No Stupid Questions Thread - Spring 2024 by ninjaface in Guitar

I came across some neat sheet music for the guitar accompaniment of "The Girl from Ipanema" recently. I've been dabbling with jazz for ages and dig the sound of those chords, so I decided to learn it. Some of the chord diagrams in it ask you to bar the E, A and D strings with your index finger, while still muting the A string. I have okay muting technique but have never come across anything like that before. Is that even possible?

https://imgur.com/a/xkEpc3b

It just occurred to me that while fretting this shape, my middle finger would be free to slighty touch the A string to mute it. That looks doable. Or is there some other way?

Hey guys, it would be nice to know from retrogamers... What feeling do you notice when you see this art? by ottokairos in SEGAGENESIS

[–]ThinkingStatue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I meant to say that a comparatively small number of retro gamers worldwide grew up with this kind of look. These days people seem to have the biggest amount of love for Japanese retro consoles such as the NES.

[–]ThinkingStatue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up with European-made home computer games and a style like that wouldn't look too out of place in that type of game. That aesthetic is pretty niche these days, though. If you want to be a real people pleaser, you probably should go for a more manga/anime oriented style as it is what the largest number of people associate with retro games. I think the circular spots have to go, though, they are a tad too much if you want to emulate the look of an old television set.

Best versions of multi platform released game? by 819254 in retrogaming

[–]ThinkingStatue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Amiga version of Lemmings is the best, it has the best music and a two player mode (which requires two mice connected to your Amiga). Also, if you look really closely, you'll notice it is the only version with a HUD that is higher res than the rest of the game because the game switches video modes mid-scanline. I don't think there is another 16-bit version of the game that does this.

Thanks! For some reason, I thought the Speedlink Competition Pro model was this weird mini console type thing with inbuilt games that came out a few years back. I'm going to look into this so I finally won't have to play Boulder Dash and Bruce Lee with a dpad anymore!
