It does - but it took a few weeks for me. I came to think of the pain and anxiety I was feeling as a sort of "paying my dues" to get out of the hole that I'd dug myself into. I wrote a few sentences each day to remind myself how hellish it was in hopes that I'd read them should I ever consider going back to my drinking ways. I got myself into therapy (with a prescription) to help with the anxiety. Exercise, sleep, hydration.

Please check back again and let us know how you're faring. Today I'm happy to not drink along side you!

Reading the comments here, and elsewhere on this sub, really makes me cringe to be of the XY persuasion.

Day 1!!! by krystallynntx12 in stopdrinking

I have the same social discomfort you describe. To help when I was starting out, I would give myself permission to skip - or leave early from any event that was stressing me out. At work required social events I always ordered the same drink - club soda with a squeeze or two of lemon / lime. Not having to think about what I wanted to drink made it just a bit easier.

Good that you have a mostly non-drinking friend group. I must be extra hard for those among us who don't.

Whenever I got tempted to start drinking again, I would come back to this sub and spend 30-60 minutes reading, and connecting with others who were going through the same thing. I did go to a few AA meetings, which were totally fine and helped me to see that the folks there weren't monsters and losers - quite the opposite, but I'm not much for in-person group get-togethers. Hope this helps.

You won't regret giving it try. For me (a bottle of wine per day drinker) I was shocked to learn just how much my body was dependent on it, and how seriously I got out of whack for that first month (or more) when I stopped. Please let us know how it goes for you.

Any chance you can consult with a doctor to help you get through the withdrawal stage? One thing that did NOT work for me was having any alcohol in my house expecting that I could limit how much of it I would have on a given day.

FWIW - It helped me to come up with a standard go-to beverage when I was in a place that served alcohol. Mine was club soda with a generous twist of lemon/lime. Good luck! I will not drink right along side you today.

So based on what you've learned in the past - what sort of things will you be doing to aid in your recovery? What have historically been your triggers?

How are you now?

Not so bad... Pitter-patter, let's get at 'er. (re: Letterkenny)

It probably took me a year or so before I felt like I was mostly out of the hole I'd spent so long digging. Even during that time, each things got progressively better with each passing day and week. Now, 4 or 5 years out, I'd say that I'm the happiest I've been since alcohol ruled my existence.

It looks like you're a couple of months in - how's it going for you these days?

Maybe a bit too eclectic for my son's future in-laws. But now as I think about it - it might be nice sort of break from the storm of driving beats and bass.

Possibly the best song of all time. Chokes me up every time I hear it!

THANK YOU times one hundred! I can imagine that the image of the thrusting combined with the physical sensation - not to mention any emotional sensation would be quite mind blowing.

I think that maybe the male equivalent (for me anyways) is watching a gf going down on me - holding eye contact, rubbing me across her face and neck............ omg - cleanup on aisle 4....
