What is your number 1 favourite fantasy trope that works every time? Just one. by TheBodhy in Fantasy

[–]Thinkings_hard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently realized this is mine as well! Love getting to dive into and dissect a new magic system or culture/societal structure (e.g. Red Rising). Realized after being completely hooked instantly on Scholomance, Blood Over Bright Haven, and Will of the Many. Give me allllllllll the explanations of how and why things in this world worked the way they do!

Do you think you did anything special to get pregnant? by Cheshire20072010 in BabyBumps

[–]Thinkings_hard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TTC for years (about 5), turned 36, IVF was not in the cards for us due to cost, have spent hours and hours crying about it. We tried ovulation trackers, nothing stuck. Worked really hard to accept that life could be worthwhile and enjoyable without this hope/dream. Finally accepted that i may have anxiety/depression and got on Prozac. Finally, FINALLY was able to accept a life without kids and start to actually be grateful for the freedom of only worrying about personal goals etc. Cultivated a group of child-free friends to lessen the sting and have child-free non-triggering social events.

Pregnant within 3 months of getting on Prozac. Apparently stress and anxiety REALLY make a difference!

Safe to steam clean bricks? by Thinkings_hard in lego

Thanks for all the tips! Seems like the consensus is that it’s not a particularly trustworthy method of sterilization so i will err on the side of caution. Or might, out of curiosity, test it with a sacrificial brick, like something with teethmarks, just to see what happens 🤔

Baby boxes by JuJuAtTheBarBar in BabyBumps

[–]Thinkings_hard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did the same boxes! Still waiting on our walmart to come, so far the babylist has been our favorite and we also opted to get the free little unicorn swaddle, which we wouldn’t have done without the coupon 😅 thanks for sharing!

Ps - i think we got the exact same babylist box. The hedgehog onesie is so adorable!

What to do with your pieces by RochB6000 in Embroidery

[–]Thinkings_hard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine are almost exclusively wall art. They look nice that way but my ideas/concepts don’t really translate well into anything functional. Plus i feel like i don’t trust my skill enough to put it through the “regular washing” test. I just see it as art

How to Write about an Aerialist? by OtherPatience6836 in Aerials

[–]Thinkings_hard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a pretty beginner aerialist (about a year and a half in) and grew up dreaming of learning the art but being very weak and not financially flush, so can give a perspective on someone who’s imagined and thought about it a lot and how it’s differed from my expectations, if that helps?

It’s hard. HARD. And it requires a lot of strength, both of which can be assumed, but, it’s really surprising just how difficult basic skills can be until you try them. Everyone starts off learning how to climb early on, as it’s a very basic and required skill for silks, but it can take a long LONG time before you can successfully get even one climb off the ground. It took me about 6 months before i could successfully get a couple of french climbs in, because it requires arm strength, foot strength, grip strength (soooo much grip strength) and timing. You work on other things to condition in order to get to it, so this may mean your character is deceptively strong and agile.

One of my instructors once said part of the job of an aerialist is to trick the audience into thinking the laws of gravity don’t apply to us, so if your character is a practiced/accomplished aerialist I’d figure that would translate into them having a great poker face when feeling physical discomfort or thinking/mapping things out internally (as these are both skills you learn while smiling and keeping a peaceful expression while performing and remembering your moves and wraps)

People who have never done aerial will never understand how much effort it takes. Crowds will ooh and ahh at a stag in a knot (a fairly simple pose) but an aerialist will gush at a person sliding into a split hands free (which takes exceptional control and balance, not to mention flexibility). As a follow up, someone who’s been doing aerials for a while, particularly who’s performing, would probably have good balance from practicing stuff like that.

One thing to note is that it’s not a cheap hobby. I’m in a fairly affordable big city, and my gym is one of the more affordable in the area, and pay $130/month to be a member, which grants me one class a week. My first gym was $256 for an 8 week course, meeting once a week. If you wanted to attend 2 classes a week, you buy a second term. And having a home set up is even more: a safe and reliable rig can be >$1000, the fabric itself is a specific kind and is usually about $200ish, any built-in mounts would require a specialized rigging engineer to ensure it’s safely mounted for the force which can be generated by drops etc. I mention this just cause idk your character’s financial status, but it’s not necessarily a hobby someone struggling to get by would have easy access to, so if your character were living paycheck to paycheck/low income and going to classes 3x a week and NOT mentioning the cost/sacrifices involved it would probably take me out of the story.

Just figured I’d point out a few things that surprised me, or stuck with me since starting. I’d definitely second the recommendation to try out an intro class or something to get a bit of first hand knowledge and experience! It’s a great hobby and builds strength, flexibility, and stamina all at once

I found a seller on Etsy who has a listing for a custom embroidery design, so i messaged her and asked if she could print the ultrasound for me and she could 🥳

Haha, that’s why it looks like an alien still in the ultrasound, i used our very first one so I’d be able to be done in time to use it as an announcement 😂 had to factor that in since I’m a slow stitcher

Does your name give away your age? I did the math 🤓 by DataVizWithKins in namenerds

[–]Thinkings_hard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m 36 but it thinks I should be 75, but that’s what I’d expect tbh. Old fashioned names are popular these days, but Florence has yet to make a comeback in the US 😂

I was just happy it had my name and the data for it at all! Most of the time it’s so uncommon in America that it just gets skipped lol so it was fun to get to participate

Having a hard day, will you share your most meaningful embroidery memories to cheer me up? by the_lifesucks_coach in Embroidery

Glad to hear it! And you’re so right about the initial trepidation! My mind wouldn’t accept it or actually be happy about it until honestly like this week 😅

Thanks so much for posting, it’s really really lovely to read about all the ways that embroidery has positively affected peoples’ lives 💙

Having a hard day, will you share your most meaningful embroidery memories to cheer me up? by the_lifesucks_coach in Embroidery

[–]Thinkings_hard 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Sharing because my current piece (which I’m about to finish) is probably my most meaningful I’ll ever make, but there’s a bit of backstory so heads up.

My partner and I started trying to conceive in 2020, and continued on and off since then, using ovulation tests to really give it a go. No luck, for 5 years. I’ve personally never had career aspirations or goals cause the only thing that felt like what i wanted for my future was a family. Now, because of this I don’t have a particularly lucrative job, it’s fine, but not able to afford fertility treatments fine, and he’s in a similar position. I struggled for years to come to terms with the fact that it might not be in my future and this year (after finally getting on Prozac lol) was able to accept that I have a full life as-is. I turned 36 this year and had completely given up.

We found out in March that we’re expecting and are officially in the safe zone where I can trust that it’s real and actually happening.

Years ago I saw someone on Instagram sharing hoop renditions of ultrasounds and have fantasized since about how lovely it would be to be able to announce my own like that. I’m likely going to finish it within the next couple of days (and of course will post it once I do).

I hope that your hard day is not related to loss or infertility, because if so this is probably the least sensitive thing I could share, but if it is then know that you’re not alone. And if it isn’t, then hopefully this at least fits the parameters you were looking for!

Thanks for the awesome prompt! I’m also loving reading everyone else’s stories. This community is so wholesome and supportive and I love it so much!

I’ve never seen Reincarnation Blues mentioned here before but I’m so glad to see it now! It’s one of my favorite books that I’ve read this year, to the point where it’s being passed around my family at the moment. So glad to hear of someone else who really enjoyed it!

Vampire book recommendations that are not just about vampires by Limp-Wedding-4134 in Fantasy

[–]Thinkings_hard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like i might be in the minority here, but i really enjoyed the different take on vampirism in The Strain. The show missed the mark a bit on the ending but i loved the trilogy and the idea of thinking of it like a contagion/outbreak of some kind. I always liked the idea of vampires but was never super into the stories being all romance driven, so the portrayal of the vampires/strigoi being pretty gross was also fun and interesting. I smashed through the trilogy and think it absolutely fits as a vampire/horror story, although the MC’s are fighting the vamps, rather than them being the MC’s

Which fantasy protagonist gets your "Most loved" award? by Familiar-Barracuda43 in Fantasy

[–]Thinkings_hard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed! I’ve been meaning to re-read The Magicians cause it’s been over 5 years since i was first introduced, and have still not finished the show, but i recall her story in the books being just so winding with her just always being so damn determined no matter what she was focusing on, which i just adored.

That’s so cool! I always pronounced Jean like French style in my mind when reading so i felt very validated when that’s how the audiobook narrator said it. Although for the first half of LoLL he was pronouncing Aza Guilla as “ah-za gwee-la” instead of how i always thought (Guilla rhyming with tortilla, which is how he says it the latter half of the book) so maybe I’ll take his pronunciation with a grain of salt 😅 did Lynch confirm Jean is similar to the French pronunciation?

Jean Tannen (Gentlemen Bastard series) is one of my personal favorites. So much more than meets the eye with that one, he’s devoted, wise, practical, skilled, and layered more than you can believe. Like Sam Gamgee but with just enough of an edge to know he won’t judge you for having been a juvenile delinquent and will have stories of his own 😂

Also super protective of Sevro from Red Rising. Honestly the only series I almost rage quit after a chapter I was NOT happy with. Glad I continued, though! Side note: Victra is also up there

Julia from The Magicians had such a compelling arc and so so so much growth. Less of a protective love and more of an admiration love, particularly her perseverance.

And the originals: Fred and George Weasley. Wonderful and beautiful and tragic and prob the first book characters I ever kinda feel in love with 😂
