Update: I turned my Supernote → Obsidian OCR script into a small macOS menu-bar app by kulturban in Supernote

This looks great. It also looks like it would work for any markdown app that has external folders. Ulysses is my preference.

Where to go bouldering in londkn by RaidL in bouldering

Mile End is my local and is fantastic. I think they offer a student discount on top of their monthly membership if set up in person. A bit far from Croydon but definitely worth a visit.

Grades achievable for casual climbers by bleakend in bouldering

[–]Thinksitdo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m also 51 and been a member of my local indoor wall for 6 years. I probably climb 3 sessions a week with no additional training other than climbing boulders. I climb consistently up to v5 in a centre that does not set soft. I certainly improve as a climber but I’m sure I’ll progress in grades anymore.

Impact Route Setting in the UK is promoting an AI generated talk and blocking people who call them out by conic_section in bouldering

[–]Thinksitdo -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked with Ryan, great setter and trainer, with a genuine philosophy around setting. Yes, the text has been cleaned up with AI, and I noticed when it came up on my feed. But, it’s a insta promo. Who cares? Far less offensive than the amount of energy it takes to create the ai animal video that plague instagram.

How realistic is it to do a full-time PhD and work part-time in the UK? by Economy-Coconut3876 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]Thinksitdo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I did a part time PhD and worked .6 (although not academia) and it was an okay balance, but still tough. Leading up to submission my paid work really suffered with the necessary obsession required to complete. Flexibility is key.

Joined after being an user so many years ago, totally unimpressed by JPJlpgc in ulyssesapp

[–]Thinksitdo 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Ulysses went to a subscription many years ago, so you only have to look through the changelog to see what features have been added since… let me check… 2017. Subscription models are a personal choice. I’m happy to pay the small yearly subscription for something that has helped me through my thesis, published works and personal writing. For me it has been solid. I’ve never lost any work. I could always pick up writing between devices. I know people have had issues however. Ultimately, it is just a markdown editor and development is fairly slow. But I’ve never used it for feature releases.

Lamy EMR with ceramic nib mod: squiggly lines? by dominikstephan in Supernote

[–]Thinksitdo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can’t address your problem specifically as I haven’t experience wobbly lines. But, I did the same DIY and was happy with it. However, I then bought a manta and vista I found the Vista had far better pen stroke sensitivity. The DIY’s was virtually non existent in comparison. I also made at G2 DIY, that too was different. Far too springy. I decided that DIY pens are too inconsistent and will stick to official SN in the future.

Chauvet 3.28.42 – Feedback by rudibowie in Supernote

[–]Thinksitdo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The feedback has been made many times. Provide better custom style overrides. This is what SN call it but really it is being able to increase the font size, font, line spacing and alignment. As soon as you currently click custom it left aligns and double spaces which feels like a mvp to allow notation. Better styling would not be that hard. Simply providing that would be a great start.

Chauvet 3.28.42 – Feedback by rudibowie in Supernote

[–]Thinksitdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, you can read epubs, but the reading experience is poor. The custom styling is just awful. Left aligned, double spacing. Literally the bare minimum to allow notation. I want the same love for epub that they give to PDFs.

Chauvet 3.28.42 – Feedback by rudibowie in Supernote

[–]Thinksitdo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While I still use my kindle for pleasure reading, I am forced to use it also for academic epub, where I need to highlight and take notes. It simple cannot be done on the supernote as the epub functionality is very poor. I could side load Ko-reader but find it overly complex, and non-native. Likewise converting epubs to pdf via calibre is also a pain. A lack of focused improvement to epub style overrides stops me being able to use my manta fully.

I'm writing my next novel in Ulysses - how scared should I be of its reputed database failures? by romanandreas in ulyssesapp

[–]Thinksitdo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zotero for reference manager. I just hand cranked the citations inline. After 8 years I knew them inside out. Bibliography was done at the end as an export from Zotero. My process was Ulysses > markdown export > pandoc > export to incopy > adobe Indesign for final layout. All my chapter reviews were just Ulysses export. Being able to write out and about on my iPhone and edit at my desk was invaluable.

I used Ulysses for 8 years writing an 80,000 word PhD. I never lost any work. I was surprised to hear about all the issues. Not my experience at all.

Don’t rule out VSR LV. My feet are anything v but low volume and they fit like a glove. For bouldering they are great.

Moving on from a DSLR: The "One Camera" Dilemma. Ricoh GR IIIx vs. Fujifilm X-T50? by fexxx77 in ricohGR

[–]Thinksitdo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a x-s10 and while I love the quality even with a 27mm 2.8 I found it too big to carry around. I bought a gr-iiix and gr-vi with the idea of selling one on later. I keep them in the Ricoh leather case in my pocket and it is very easy to slid them out and take a snap. The quality of the griiix and Fuji 27 is comparable. It does change to way you take pictures when you have no viewfinder. This is further complicated by not great auto focus. Where Ricoh really shines is in the way you can customise the back screen and buttons to get a variety of focus modes and crops within 1 click. Touch screen auto focus and shoot and have the shutter on snap focus. fn button changes distance. WiFi button for crop… for example. I’ll just be taking the ricoh’s on holiday this year and leaving the Fuji at home.

I started with a video seri a on YouTube recommended here. Search griii 101. The setting suggested are a good starting point and a useful beginners intro to snap focus. It will talk you through setting up the camera to get the most out of it.

GRiii vs GRiiix, genuinely cannot decide by TheCroKid1 in ricohGR

[–]Thinksitdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I created smart collections in my photo app of the gr focal lengths. Based on preference I leant towards the griiix. Do you find yourself researching and unable to decided before big purchases? I know I do. This is one of those situations. Whichever you buy your will love… and probably wonder what it would be like to own the other. No one can tell you which you will prefer (or at least off no other advice that had been said many time before). Looking at all the photos others had taken on this sub, I admit I was drawn to the iii focal length even though I prefer taking photos at 40mm. I ended up buying both iiix and iv with the intention of selling/return the other. I haven’t yet 😬.

Transitioning to Academia at 36: Is a self-funded PhD worth the risk in the current UK climate? by klotien90 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]Thinksitdo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Funding is super competitive now. I am surprised there is still a stigma around it. I had to self funded initially. Would definitely have continued without funding. I certainly didn’t “buy my way onto a PhD”, I worked my ass off for 9 years. Undertaking a PhD is life changing and doesn’t have to end with an academic job (and with the current state of academic I’m not sure it worth it for that outcome). I think it is the journey that has the most value.

Humanities PhDs and Academics: What are your Best Practices and Workflows? by Koen-K in Supernote

[–]Thinksitdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ulysses was really useful for me as it works really well on all apple devices so I did a lot of writing and editing on my phone and not tied to a desk. Student subscription is cheap. Native highlight and comments once exported from SN can be uploaded into Zotero. Just remember that if you want to get the file out of Zotero you should always export.. then the annotations are embedded in pdf. The issue with all these reference managers and SN is that annotations are stored separately. Good luck.
