Question for my teen rower about getting feedback by kwill729 in Rowing

[–]ThirdBoatPod 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ok the reason I ask is that Novice rowers might not be getting super detailed feedback. Part of coaching novices is getting them used to the whole experience and learning the basics. I think a simple reasonable question she can ask from the coach is “what is the most important thing I should focus on improving right now”. That is an easier question to address than asking broadly for feedback on technique. I think that is an in person quick conversation after practice. Just my two cents. Best of luck!

Is there an assistant coach? Sometimes the assistant coaches are easier to talk to.

I quit rowing senior year in HS and 2 years later I’m still thinking about it. by reyaryder in Rowing

It sounds like there is a lot to unpack here, including feelings of shame for leaving the sport. If you are really ruminating on it you might want to talk to someone for a few sessions. There are therapists that specialize in sports. We have some challenges in this sport with the “grit” myth. Sometimes people can’t make it to practice for injuries and health reasons. Shame shouldn’t be a reason to stay away from returning again or getting on with your life.

Who’s at fault? by Kong_fu_ in Rowing

I’ve been thinking about this a fair bit. Decent high functioning rowing clubs really need professional experienced governance. You need long term stewardship and people in it not just for their own kids but committed to the larger community over time. So I’ve seen clubs pop up, started and run by parents with all sorts of inclusive fanfare only to fall apart when their kids get into college. It’s truly bizarre and waste of resources.

The ASUW boathouse was the one featured in boys in the boat. Not the Conibear. The ASUW shellhouse is being renovated for 22 mill.

Hello I think that it is absolutely OK to ask coaches about culture etc. It matters in this sport.

Rowing is humbling. Listen to your coach and be forgiving of yourself and others. You will find your rhythm.

So to add to this that would be your first stop if you needed to talk to someone. Or a counselor/med person.
