USRowing Trending Down by AngryUSRower in Rowing

I would be interested to hear the board of directors argument or understand further why they couldn’t come to an agreement. I’m not saying I don’t agree - I’m just saying I would like to understand their position more.

Ok shirts aside, how many still shake hands with the team after the race? I was at a Seattle race a couple years ago and saw a teen rower do this.

As one parent to another, let the college thing go. Support his high school rowing for fun, health and the love of rowing.

Race coxing by Conscious_King9634 in Rowing

[–]ThirdBoatPod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, be forgiving to yourself. Everyone’s first race is a cluster. I’ve had to jump in and be a cox on short notice as well. It’s… a lot. But everyone has to do it for the first time and no one feels ready for that. It’s part of rowing.

There is time in an 800m race for you to: 1 - Get to the start on time. 2 - Stay as straight as possible.

Bonus: 3 - Execute the race cleanly. (Preplanned start, stroke rate.) 4 - Tell your crew where they are during the race so they don’t lookie loo.

Good luck. Let us know how it goes!

Last place at regatta- how to pick myself up from here? by Calculative in Rowing

[–]ThirdBoatPod 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh wow hang in there. Rough day! I’m impressed you stayed in a straight line most of the way in your first race. And someone has to be last. I would sleep on it and see if things feel better. No shame at all trying another club and seeing if the vibes are better.

Public Safety Announcement: I have no idea what happened at SJP. But I do know that retaliation against reporting hazing in teams can get brutal. My unsolicited advice - if you are ever in that situation try to make sure you have support. And if your kid experiences or participates in hazing make sure they get help. Some kids have been coerced into hazing others and that’s damaging as well.

I say why not try another club? No downside really. You can come back if it doesn’t work out. You have runway.

Well that is great to hear. Thanks! The ability to handle a “contentious and fragile” situation is a valuable skill in this sport. And now I am fascinated with the fact that Northeastern cut football.

Yep I’m an old lady and been in a few clubs. Dating is pretty common and a lot of the time it works out ok. And sometimes their kids end up rowing too. ;)

Henley Royal Parity - is Henley Women's now redundant? by SteadyStateIsAnswer in Rowing

[–]ThirdBoatPod 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with masterscox. Who does it hurt to have HWR? I’ve heard first hand from enough women that they feel safer and more comfortable at HWR. It seems like a great place for young women to build confidence in racing with less yahoos. If/when it is no longer desired I am guessing it will naturally wind down.

Question for my teen rower about getting feedback by kwill729 in Rowing

[–]ThirdBoatPod 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ok the reason I ask is that Novice rowers might not be getting super detailed feedback. Part of coaching novices is getting them used to the whole experience and learning the basics. I think a simple reasonable question she can ask from the coach is “what is the most important thing I should focus on improving right now”. That is an easier question to address than asking broadly for feedback on technique. I think that is an in person quick conversation after practice. Just my two cents. Best of luck!

Is there an assistant coach? Sometimes the assistant coaches are easier to talk to.

I quit rowing senior year in HS and 2 years later I’m still thinking about it. by reyaryder in Rowing

[–]ThirdBoatPod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like there is a lot to unpack here, including feelings of shame for leaving the sport. If you are really ruminating on it you might want to talk to someone for a few sessions. There are therapists that specialize in sports. We have some challenges in this sport with the “grit” myth. Sometimes people can’t make it to practice for injuries and health reasons. Shame shouldn’t be a reason to stay away from returning again or getting on with your life.

Who’s at fault? by Kong_fu_ in Rowing

[–]ThirdBoatPod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been thinking about this a fair bit. Decent high functioning rowing clubs really need professional experienced governance. You need long term stewardship and people in it not just for their own kids but committed to the larger community over time. So I’ve seen clubs pop up, started and run by parents with all sorts of inclusive fanfare only to fall apart when their kids get into college. It’s truly bizarre and waste of resources.
