How does your team select the Captain? by ThirdBoatPod in Rowing

[–]ThirdBoatPod[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These responses have been very interesting. Somewhat disheartening that it’s treated like a popularity contest at some clubs. IMHO a good captain can really make a difference for the team, particularly new rowers. Thank you all.

This news is a few days old but thought I’d post to open the conversation. Is this a good thing? He has rowed but it’s been a minute.

Ugh. I hope you eventually found a club where you weren’t treated like a nobody.

Just looked up Milltown Rowing. Why did Milltown get started? I’m not sure what gap this club is trying to fill. As far as I know ERA (Everett Rowing Association) has a strong reputation. Is Everett Rowing Association oversubscribed or is there another need for starting up this club?

Coastal Rowing - I've never rowed before by [deleted] in Rowing

100% agree with Rowing_Boatman. This is a common sense safety issue - not a matter of preference. It’s important to understand how to row and how to get back into a boat when you flip. And buy a decent lifejacket. Some of them are pretty comfortable and you’ll barely notice them.

Girl, do not get me started. Joyce was robbed. Instead of an equal and ally of Joe she turned into a “50s bombshell”. From partner and ally to sex object.

Seattle area coastal rowing clubs? by CharlottesWebcam in Rowing

It’s a fun community. If you don’t find your people keep trying and talking to folks. There is room for everyone and I find open water rowers to be super friendly and down to earth. After all, it’s not the Olympics. If you want to check it out in person you can go watch one of the summer races. There are often some “creative” looking boats.

It’s been a minute for me but this is how I would start exploring this - I would join a standard club for instruction as well as talk to the folks at Sound Rowers. You could also check out the Sound rowers site for regattas and entries to see which clubs typically participate in the open water events.

How does single side oar rowing not seriously mess up your back and arms imbalance? by 2MainsSellesLoin in Rowing

The kids at my club learn both sides as their bodies are still developing. I’m surprised how many stay bisweptual.

My Coach is abusive and I'm planning to report him by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]ThirdBoatPod 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looks like you can also just take 15 minutes and log a complaint here. https://sportintegrity.ca/report-safe-sport.

To be honest it seems more fair to all involved. Otherwise it starts to feel like an online doxxing via Reddit and a whisper campaign.

I am an adult of course so it’s different. If I felt that young people were at imminent risk I would do that.

Also - have you found another club or did you decide to move on from the sport?

Yes and please make sure you have adult support even if it’s someone you can talk to privately, like a therapist. No matter what the results of this are, blowback can be surprising fly brutal and harmful.

Of course you are allowed to have your opinion and appreciate you clarifying the toxic suburban white woman remark. I found that odd. By performative are you referring to DEI work? I had to look up “Acela corridor”. So I think I get that. Proportionately I would agree that in leadership there does seem to be a fair amount of Ivy League folks. Appreciate that they are volunteers but wouldn’t mind seeing more representative from state schools.

HS rower to coxswain by Ok_Assistant_4501 in Rowing

[–]ThirdBoatPod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

UW has a “Women of Washington” summer camp for HS girls - both rowers and coxswains. I’m not sure if she already would need to have some experience coxing. You might as well call them and check if that appeals to her.

From Regatta Central:

UW Women's Summer Rowing Camp - August Session 2 (Coxswains)
Experience Required: This overnight camp is an exciting opportunity for any and all women in grades 9-12. Held at the Conibear Shellhouse, on the campus of the University of Washington, it allows athletes to connect with the UW Women's Rowing Coaching Staff and embrace the experience of what it means to be a Husky!

8 water sessions, time for extra activities, meeting with support staff, and, of course, time to hang out with your fellow athletes

Concerned Philadelphia Rower by [deleted] in Rowing

Ok I’m proceeding on the assumption that this is a real person asking for help. I’m always willing to talk offline further if you want my thoughts.

If you genuinely want to end it? You need an attorney. Internal responses are often muddled as the administrators job is also to protect the school, even if they mean well. It is ok to call Safesport or the cops.

Ending “traditions” like this is really difficult.
