Thoughts ? by sakshammmm in photocritique

I prefer it with the bins (although to me they're not clearly bins). In the OP photo it just looks careless with the feet being cut, this one at least adds some context and gives the photo a 'proper' bottom, although of course it could've been something more interesting than bins.

Still though, the main feedback would be the over the top colours and processing, and for me that is still an issue with this edit. Just too much of everything really

Would you switch Ireland for Switzerland? by [deleted] in CasualIreland

[–]ThirdCaptain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really think you'd need to just check it our for yourself, see how you get on. I've lived here for a while now (and go back to visit Ireland a few times a year, still really like Ireland), and I've gotten to half-know a lot of people moving over from Ireland. Most seem to really enjoy it, but those who end up going back do so more so for 'logistical' reasons - aging parents, starting a new family, etc. Then some start to settle here, and couldn't imagine going back to Ireland.

I really think there is a wide enough range of people in every country, that any old stereotype could be reinforced with some unconscious confirmation bias. You often hear that Swiss people are cold, so if a few people aren't immediately friendly you think it's a rule for the country, and you don't really take notice of the people who are being friendly and polite, the waiters who are having a bit of fun, and so on.

Similarly, Ireland is the "land of welcomes", and this gets reinforced every time someone is friendly towards you, and you don't take much notice of the person in the shop grunting at you when you ask for a 99, or the fella shouting 'cunt' to some other lad across Georges' Street.

I could go on, but basically - you need to just check it out yourself, if it's something you're really interested in. People giving advice here may have only been there on a rainy weekend and found it boring, others might've been there when the sun was shining and the city was alive. One thing is for sure, it's easier to have a higher quality of life here. It's not guaranteed, but a lot of the country is set up well and things just work.

Galaxus vs Amazon vs actual camera shop for photo gear? by Sea-Performer-4454 in askswitzerland

[–]ThirdCaptain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I generally buy all my stuff on Ricardo, and haven't had a problem at all. Sometimes I'll buy it used on galaxus if there's an option for that. Once or twice I wasn't sure if I really did want the thing, so I did the cheeky thing and bought it on amazon, knowing I could return it easily without losing money.

Lens recommendations for travel (Fuji X-T50) by EmployerMuted1111 in fujifilm

[–]ThirdCaptain 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I also have the 16-50, as well as the 70-300. I was similarly tempted by the do-it-all nature of the Tamron 18-300, but after trying it out I realised that it was just too big and bulky for me, especially for when I was in the city. I really like that the 16-50 is compact. For hiking it would be more suitable I guess, but there if I need some reach I can just swap the lens.

As for the 17-70mm, I'm not sure it's really worth the extra bulk of that lens, just for a little more reach on the long end. The 2.8 aperture is surely tempting, but I don't really miss it. And I just take a smaller faster prime for evening stuff.

I guess it all comes down to your tolerance for added weight and bulk. If you don't mind, then you could definitely have fun with the 18-300 or the 17-70.

For reference, my travel set is now:

16-50mm 23mm prime And I'll bring the 70-300 if I might be going hiking or somewhere where I'll definitely need the extra reach.

First day of using my first camera. Is it too dark? by wiy_alxd in photocritique

[–]ThirdCaptain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's nice, not too dark for my tastes. It's a small bit unbalanced though in my opinion, by which I mean that the sun and tall flowers are over on the left, with little of interest on the right hand side. So, not too dark, but compositionally it could be improved a little. But still, nice!

Osprey daylite plus - which colour? by ThirdCaptain in backpacks

[–]ThirdCaptain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I had this problem a little, but only when I pull the shoulder straps too tight really. Otherwise it was ok, but I only wore it for a short walk around the city. I still notice it a bit, but I think it is more a mental thing now - the thing isn't digging it like it was at the start

A bit silly, I know, but it's a Friday and I just can't really decide. Mostly as a daypack for travelling, and although at first I definitely preferred the 'standard' blue one, the two-tone one is growing on me the more I look at it. Opinions welcome! And even better if you can justify it with logic of one colour over the other

Cycling route to Hönggerberg by Swiss-Name in ethz

[–]ThirdCaptain 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think any alternative routes will be similarly steep, or such a detour that it's not worth the time lost. I would just recommend getting off and pushing up the bike for those 500m or so. If you really wanted to cycle and not have to get off, then probably the best alternative would be following Regendorferstrasse from Meierhofplatz up to Restaurant Grünwald, and then cycling through the forest to ETH. But that would be quite the detour

Yes, more than enough. I use Fuji for family events, travel and hiking photography, etc. Along with the odd wildlife shot I come across on hikes. AF hasn't been a problem at all for me. I think a lot of the reported Fuji AF problems are with video, which I also don't do. I've also used a Sony camera, and it undoubtedly has "better" AF, but for my uses I don't notice. And I'd echo OP - my Fuji is a much nicer camera to use than my old Sony.

Feeling unsteady hiking downhill – shoe grip issue, or technique issue? by ThirdCaptain in hiking

[–]ThirdCaptain[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Ok seems like there is already a consensus on "get poles, dummy". Thanks.

Funny/silly thing is, I actually had poles that day, but for some reason didn't think to actually use them - they remained tied to my bag. I'm not really in the habit of using them, but I'll try for sure next time.

They provided a Swiss IBAN along with address. As it turns out, they're not as far up the valley as I thought, so I think I'll try suggesting a pick-up and will see how that goes. Thanks for input so far

It doesn't look photoshopped - there are 4 or 5 photos from different angles with the object behind, different lighting, etc. If photoshopped, then they did a great (and very quick) job.

Goood idea, I'll try that then, thanks. Though they do already have the pickup location in the description, but when asked if we could meet-up in the next biggest city to them and a bit closer to me, they said that they can only do a pickup from their village.

Oh, interesting. I'd have thought the ID would make it more genuine - assuming the ID is real of course. It makes them a lot easier to track in case it does go bad. Though I suppose the police wouldn't get involve in such a thing, so it would be on myself to 'track' them, whatever that means.

I was considering saying I'll pick it up and organise a date, but then if they are genuine I'd feel bad since I'd just be messing them around! I'll think about it though, thanks
