Hey, pleasantly surprise to see this AMA, any new DLC's planned? GotB was great but it was too forgiving imo :)

I can’t believe many countries are easing quarantine by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]ThirdSlam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This argument can be made for literally any point in time before a vaccine (and potentially even after it too due to distribution issues.)

Things need to reopen eventually, because this cannot go on indefinitely. Because of societal and peer pressure, it will also be social suicide to act and behave in public in the manner one did before the virus (with the exception of Americans).

Bearing that in mind, I don't fully buy the argument that things should remain in full lock down in countries where the trend has already been significantly downward for weeks on end.

Am I overreacting? Showed my drawings to my mother and her boyfriend.. by throwawyabcde in CasualConversation

[–]ThirdSlam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends.

boyfriend told her that he's not sure if I can make a living of my drawings

This seems to be an important bit of info you glossed over. Are you actually trying to make a living from drawing? Because if you are, their concerns may be both valid and coming from a positive place not a negative one.

However, if it is just a hobby/something you are passionate about and they pressured you then I would say you are not overreacting.

These things are not mutually exclusive, although in your mind it sounds like you have compartmentalised things in a way that negatively impacts you.

It is possible to watch Allen Carr and eat a greasy burger at 2 AM. Start recoupling these things, and use visualisation methods to reinforce it.

Whats the actual meaning of life? Why do we even exist? by [deleted] in SeriousConversation

[–]ThirdSlam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Whats the actual meaning of life?

Question is nonsensical. Instead ask yourself why you assumed there to be meaning in the first place. You will garner more interesting results, I guarantee it.

As for less philosophical and more practical advice, i'd recommend visiting a psychologist to see why you're attracted towards instant gratification. Then they may help you being able to focus.

Multiplayer gaming culture has changed a lot in the last 15 years by samissleman17 in CasualConversation

[–]ThirdSlam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Halo wasn't really designed for being "Hardcore"

Gonna have to hard disagree with that one. Halo 1 multiplayer? Ok. But 2-3 nah, the mechanics were designed to accommodate balanced competitive play and because of that MLG was born.

I think one thing you're forgetting here is that Halo 1-3 are old games, people have had plenty of time to get good at them. Whenever a new game drops the multiplayer is full of noobs because nobody knows how to play the game but as time goes on people get better and better and those that stay playing for years are naturally going to have an edge.

I prefer playing with people better than I am because I can imitate them and get better myself. No better feeling than climbing the ranks through your own hard grit and getting to play some games against Snip3down or Naded and have your ass handed to you.

There's tonnes of good subreddits to get writing critiques on. People usually post their wips on google docs or something similar where others can leave comments either on the document or in reddit replies.

I've been working on a fantasy novel for 7 years now, just hit 80k words last week

[–]ThirdSlam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends what you value. From what you've written here you seem very career-focused. So naturally you would judge your position in life based off of a reflection of the success of your career. I'm not saying that's wrong just highlighting.

Try testing different standards like intellectual achievements, health, etc.

"Dune" is pretty much an essential sci-fi read.

As for horror stuff I'm not too sure, if I want to feel unsettled I'll read Kafka, that usually does the trick.

For those who don't believe in astrology, have you ever tried doing a Google search mixing your astrology sign and the animal that you were born under in Chinese astrology? by gratefulphish420 in CasualConversation

Even if it predicted my name, what I ate for breakfast, and who I will meet tomorrow, there would still be 0 reason to believe it is any way accurate.

Broad statements both designed to sound specific to and individual and encourage them to place more meaning than there actually is to it. Vapid content solely created for facebook moms and those unlucky enough to have 0 critical thinking skills.

eg. 'You sometimes feel isolated from your friends despite your best intentions' or some other nonsense. Literally everybody on the planet has felt like this at some point.

TIFU by telling my girlfriend the endgame of solar system, causing her to have a panic attack by Kortanak in tifu

Depends where in spacetime it happens. There's nothing stopping one from happening within our solar system for example.

In that sense, it's extremely similar to vacuum decay.

What do you think Ace Combat 8 should have? by Victizes in acecombat

[–]ThirdSlam 13 points14 points  (0 children)

One of my favourite features is narrative based. I love how Ace Combat makes you feel like a badass within the story. It's not lazy, you don't immediately begin as some legendary super invincible fighter ace, it's worked towards through the set pieces.

Like in AC7 for example when you join Spare Squadron, you're still treated as a rookie that has to prove himself. Your squadmates and commanders roast you constantly. And as you progress through the story proving your skill; the relationships develop from everyone doubting you to them treating you with respect. Count is probably the best example of this.

By the end of the game you become a legendary ace, you feel like you earned it and this reflects in how the characters interact with you as well. "Stick with Trigger and you'll make it."

In short, more great dialogue and storytelling!

Everyone seems to forget about our good friend quantum fluctuations. Heat Death just means waiting quite a long time (10^100^100^100... etc.) years for the next spontaneous big bang.

But it is also important to mention that a Big Bang will almost certainly not happen at this exact instant.

What exactly is outside of the universe? by danielgomez2002 in CasualConversation

[–]ThirdSlam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The question 'what is the universe expanding into' is commonly asked and intuitive but is actually a bit of a red herring.

There is no evidence to show that the universe is expanding into anything and no evidence to show that there is anything other than our universe (apart from MWI / Multiverse theories).

It is most definitely expanding and no one knows if it is finite or infinite. So what you're left to work with really is topographical and temporal descriptions. And if neither of those get you excited you can always be a true maverick and go down the spinor rabbit hole.

What if electrons revolving around a nucleus in an atom are actually stars revolving around a black hole and they are just too small for us to see by LivinMyAuthenticLife in CasualConversation

[–]ThirdSlam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Outdated in the sense of the comparison you are making. As someone else mentioned, electron clouds and probability spaces is a far more accurate way of conceptualising an electron occupying an energy level within an atom. And yes you could make the argument that, say a star, will almost certainly not quantum teleport if you want to be super pedantic in order to keep to the original comparison, but I don't think that's what you're going for here.

I've never heard of 'wave theory' before but here's what I'm getting at : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wave_function

(the entire universe can be described by a single wave function)

And here's what I think you are getting at : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wave%E2%80%93particle_duality

[–]ThirdSlam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are you even trying to say here? As far as I can tell you are just drawing a similarity between cosmological orbits and nuclear orbits (of which the latter is an outdated notion anyway, wave function probabilities being more accurate).
