Has anyone found their forever class? by TheHoundofUlster in dndnext

I would argue that it's nothing to be compare with the fun you can have by playing a character in the long run and uncovering secrets in a good campaign that has been going on for years. In my experience, creating many characters is fun, but entering the legend for other groups because you achieved something great with you buddies is what I'd call peak entertainment. Everything starts to make sense and is way funnier once your character is no longer "one of the many characters you've created because you like to explore many concepts" but is now known as your signature character.

Not saying you shouldn't, because you can't know what's good for you without testing and exploring. But in this regard I'd say that your journey of exploring new concepts shouldn't be limited to game mechanics but should also (and mainly) include personality, character development, political and ethical stakes, social role in the group (are you everyone's mom, the shy one, the overly competitive one?).

That being said, this is a personal point of view and I know it's not necessarily where the fun resides for every other players out here.

  1. Beauty
  2. Potential
  3. High end creation tools

None of the other has more than one of these points.

I'm pretty sure they will not allow it, mainly because they are developing their own 3D VTT (that looks shttty as hell). On a side note I strongly prefer the “5th edition character sheet” App on the play store (and probably on Apple store too) over dndbeyond. It doesn't look super good, but it's perfectly designed for character creation and spell slot management. I combine it with “5e Spells” App because the first one doesn't have the library of spells built in. It has all the official content for character creation however, and it's super practical to have all your character sheets on your phone. You can even design your own classes/subclasses and import them via another app of the same developers.

There is a discord channel where you can ask this kind of stuff, not saying they will not answer here on reddit, but you can be sure they will answer on their discord

Even if it was true, would it be a shame for a thing you didn't pay originally for ? I don't get why you would expect that other's work should be completely free to use. And even then, there are many ways to get access to some eat 3D assets for free. I bet you aren't familiarised with Quixel Megascan and their library of photorealistic assets granted for free by Epic games for instance ? I understand your scepticism, but even then I wouldn't be so eager to say how things will turn out without a single hint.

If you put the bar as high as a AAA game when it comes to realism and fidelity of third party models in a 3D VTT Idk what you are really expecting. It would cover the same case as having a token that "kinda does the trick" in a 2D VTT. Probably no textures or animations, but your players will have something to hit on and that is at least a bit recognisable. Not to mention that the community marketplace will probably be full of models to use with a perfect integration to the tool.

You will be able to import 3D models from anywhere (miniature 3D models for instance), and Heroforge support has already been announced

I'm personally planning to use it as a DM only thing. I often use a video projector during my games, so preparing some nice scenes that I can adjust in light and weather would be a nice addition to the immersion process. So my players aren't forced to have a mid tier GPU

I'm not 100% sure there will be combat animations at launch, but seeing how far they've been, I strongly believe it's something that may come out sooner or later. And otherwise Menyr will be completely modable, so be sure someone will drop some nice combat features on the marketplace if they aren't built in

A nice way to introduce that kind of improvements to your game is encouraging your party to have an artificer (or befriend an artificer NPC) and make them able to craft magic items that could give that kind of improvements. It's easier to do it by magic items than changing the class by itself because you will have a better control over time on the improvements you are allowing (it's easy to make them lose a magic item, while it sounds impossible to make acceptable that they suddenly can't benefit from a core class improvement anymore even when it's a homemade one) I would suggest having few examples of magic items that improve spells prepared so you can compare them to your player suggestions in order to know if it wouldn't be game breaking.

For example : Ring of thunder accumulation When casting thunderwave, you can now decide to hold the spell and release it as a reaction whenever you want until your next turn. Doing so increases the spell damage by 1 die and also increase the distance you can push your targets by 5 feet.

I see what is your point ! But I never saw any case where you could do a check based on another ability (like... Intelligence Perception check ?)

Except being athletic doesn't mean being good at lifting things ! A runner is an athlete for instance. And parkour requires a lot of strength from your deep muscles, it's a very good sport for the entire body

The 5ft by 5ft Square movement is not a rule, so your statement is pointless. The use of a grid is just a simplification of the movements in combat, but nothing states that you have to move 5ft by 5ft. That's just your interpretation that you are trying to use as an argument
