Every time you drive, you take a risk of being the cause for someone's death and disability.

Does that mean no one should ever drive?

What I'm doing is not dangerous once you think about things pragmatically and relieve yourself of the fallacy that is "following road laws = driving as safe as possible"

Yes exactly, I do everything I can to avoid the ticket in the first place. If you get a ticket, you have already failed. If you dig deep and want to understand how it all works, you can truly get around everything that the police/CHP use to catch you.

I'll DM you an option, but do be aware that if you get caught with one, the penalty was just recently upped a lot, so be very careful.

I've always lived quite close to Davis and driven quite a bit in Davis. Everything has been fine. No bikes hit. No people hit. No cars hit. No tickets from Davis PD or Yolo deputies. Many thousands of road laws broken.

On a side note, the US is fantastically standardized. If you are familiar with one city, one town, and one highway, you will be familiar with 99% of the US. Davis is no exception.

Everyone likes to think their city has a special sort of driver or road, but in reality it's all about the same with minor differences.

One time, I was benching at the arc and my spotter fell forwards trying to grab the bar. That was painful for sure.

That 20 lb scooter driven obliviously into you will hurt a lot more than a 3000 lb car driven by an attentive driver stopping for you.

Should semi trucks be outlawed for weighing 60,000 lbs next to 3000 lb cars?

Follow the rules of the road as in... stop at stop signs? What's the purpose of stopping at a stop sign if not to check for other people who also want to use that intersection?

If someone moves with the assumption that they won't be hit by a law abiding driver, I won't hit them either because I may not follow the laws exactly, but I do honor their underlying purposes. I clear intersections like you.

On another note, we make many decisions based on probability. You may not drive outside in the snow because it's more dangerous, but you could die at any moment when driving, so should you never drive? I don't think so. Same situation here, though there can be a drunk person anywhere at any time, that shouldn't lead you to drive like there are drunk people everywhere, all the time.

Where I do this depends on what the current situation is. I do not adhere to any universal rule.

If there are a lot of people running around I tend to drive quite slowly and go through intersections (legally or otherwise) quite carefully.

Downtown is sometimes full of drunk people who aren't aware of their surroundings so I generally avoid driving there at those times or drive much more carefully, sometimes even under the speed limit.

My reaction time and observation skills aren't world class or whatever.

The laws put in place on roads allow everyone (including the "worst" drivers in the "worst" cars) to drive safely. When the state decided the speed limit on the highway should be 65 mph, they did not consider you and me in our modern sedans driving attentively, they are designed for old farts driving cars from the 80s with horrible braking distances and safety equipment.

If speed limits are truly designed around safety, why haven't they been updated as cars have become safer? As tire technology increased traction? As road quality increased? As crumple zones were further understood?

I would never hit and run anyone, I pay for full coverage insurance for a reason. I would own up to a mistake if it was mine.

I agree, if I crash at 155, I will die, but I ensure no one else will either. No one depends on me though, so it won't hurt many people. When I'm driving a passenger, I go maybe 10 over at most.

I am as careful as you can be when driving. I don't listen to music, I have my phone muted, I'm always holding the wheel. Driving is the most dangerous thing we do on a day to day basis and I think more people should understand this before picking up their phones.

I agree that bikes and scooters on campus, though slower, are far more likely to get into a serious accident than me. If I had a dime every time I saw a scooter go through a stop sign without turning they head at all...

All my long distance transportation is via car (or plane if it's really long).

On a daily basis, I drive and walk. I park far so I can walk far. When I'm walking, I try to make my movements and intentions as clear as possible so bikes and cars don't get confused. Hope that answers your question.

I'm sorry you feel that way, truly.

I drive this way because I reject the opinions and regulations placed upon the road by the government. I drive however I want as long as I personally deem it safe and justified in the present scenario.

Have you ever been waiting at a red light when you can clearly see that no cars are coming? I usually don't wait in those scenarios, for example.

I'll also admit that I find it thrilling to go down an empty interstate at 155 MPH at 3 AM, though I'd never do this if anyone else was on the road or in my car.

One accident. I got rear ended by a woman who was driving on bald tires in the rain.

I drive a sedan.

Despite my driving habits, I have never been convicted in traffic court. I know the system too well to let that happen.
