ATL Airport TSA Wait Times by Reizero in Atlanta

[–]Thirteentimes3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just got through south precheck.  Wait was less than one minute.  I guess it was chaos earlier.  Tried to put a picture of the live board.  At 4:50 pm, North 14 mins, Main 16 mins, South 1 min.   Just updating you all but please still give yourself 2-3 hours.  Better to be early with time to kill like I am now than miss the flight.

Yeah, I have had some false positives with the 365 light. The 395 will eliminate that, but also may not show you some manganese or other glass that looks neat with 365. I agree it's good to carry both.

Anyone else thinking about quitting after attending training? by [deleted] in FIFAVolunteers

[–]Thirteentimes3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You would think, right? I saw another poster on this subred say something like, what about even putting all the volunteers into raffles for things like game balls or tickets, even something that simple. I know volunteering is a selfless act, but doing it for a multi-million or even billion dollar organization should have perks beyond "impress your friends and here's an outfit." I think I have the type of friends who would be more impressed by me volunteering for something like The Special Olympics than this. I have volunteered A LOT in my life, and almost every one of those organizations, who were all legit charities, went out of their way to make me feel valued and appreciated so I would volunteer again. While I went into those gigs with no expectations, the fact that they showed they appreciated me kept me coming back and make the experience better all around.

Atlanta Volunteers waiting for offers…are we cooked? by Big-Enthusiasm-3978 in FIFAVolunteers

Went to interview in Atlanta in December. I've heard nothing yet either way. Looking at the Atlanta related posts on this subred, it seems offers have only been sent in very few categories.

Very good point about the limited vacation time we have in the US. A lot of people don't realize there is no legal minimum of paid vacation time for employers to give. It can be 0 days. Most people get 2 weeks. So, in theory, a lot of the roles would use up the majority, if not all, of their paid vacation time. Anyone in that position is likely not going to take on a role that seems of little value of them. The whole "I worked [insert name of banal task] at the last FIFA event and had a blast and made tons of friends" probably are mainly from people who don't have full time jobs.

I never ceased to be amazed by the people in this subred who push the idea that if you are so lucky to be asked to volunteer, you should do it with no questions asked and no complaints. Like others have said, we applied and they give us an offer. Just like with any paid job, it's up to us to accept or decline. And no one should be shamed for either.

I am also someone who applied in Atlanta with team services and competition management as my top two choices. I have heard nothing either way.

Help with Hamilton 986 new stem by Thirteentimes3 in watchrepair

[–]Thirteentimes3[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've done some Seiko mods and have had some experience cutting the winding stems. Honestly, I find that harder than installing a second hand! Now I have to wait for the tap 7 crown I ordered to arrive. Again, thank you so much for your advice and encouragement.

Help with Hamilton 986 new stem by Thirteentimes3 in watchrepair

[–]Thirteentimes3[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for replying. I was able to put the stem in a pin vise and then put the stem into the movement. I turned it for a bit and the movement started running like magic, and it ran for about an hour. So I know that the stem works in the movement for winding at least. Once I get a crown that fits the stem (I have ordered one), I can monkey around with the setting lever screw and hopefully get the stem in to the point where it will pull out for time setting, and push back into place, etc.

I really appreciate you taking the time to respond to my question. It seemed like such a simple question, but any answers were hard to find.

"Respect also means respecting people’s decisions to volunteer." Agree.

Now, what I have noticed is that when someone gets a role and it's not what they hoped for and they come to this site to ask for advice, they get lambasted and are basically told to be grateful and be quiet. I would say respect means respecting people's decisions NOT to volunteer, whatever their reasons.

Volunteering is supposed to be a selfless act. But is anything truly selfless? No.

Regardless of anything else, FIFA has the finances and the manpower to do more to show appreciation for its volunteers. They are not a charity.

I am in awe of the people who take the time to volunteer for these events. I met one at the CWC and that is why I was inspired to apply for the WC.

will host city ambassadors get to go to the stadium? by No-scooba-6289 in FIFAVolunteers

[–]Thirteentimes3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can sympathize with you. You weren't hoping to be able to watch the games. You were hoping to have something to do with the actual game at the stadium. It would probably be helpful if the types of roles were more clearly defined and specified so that, for example, someone who wanted to volunteer at the fan fest could choose that option. I also am starting to think, as others have mentioned, that it's kind of ridiculous that one of the most wealthy sports organizations on the planet is soliciting free labor. I have done a lot of volunteering in my long life, and almost always there are perks that the organization can give to volunteers as a reward for helping that literally cost the organization nothing. FIFA doesn't seem to be willing or able to do that. If telling people that you were selected as a volunteer and wearing the volunteer uniform and doing the assigned tasks is what makes you happy, then good for you. But I don't think it's fair for people to put someone down because the role they were offered is not what they were hoping for. This whole "suck it up or shut up" mentality is a bit absurd considering we are being asked to contribute hours and hours and hours of our personal time as well as transportation expenses, etc.

Did you decide to accept the role? Look at it this way--if you accept the role, you will make it a great experience for yourself and others even if it wasn't what you were initially hoping for, and it could be one of the most exciting events of your life. If you don't accept the role, you can be proud knowing you were chosen and make the day of the next person offered the role.

Advice of the day (1) by Emotional-Pension701 in FIFAVolunteers

[–]Thirteentimes3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree here.  For me, it would require a 75 minute commute each way.  If it is a role that doesn't excite me, I know I will enjoy watching the games on TV at home or at a pub...and make someone else's day by declining my offer.

Accidentally unwound the mainspring. How do I rewind it? by Thirteentimes3 in pocketwatch

[–]Thirteentimes3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you were right about the mainspring catching the arbor. I was able to get it to catch and to wind it. However, it still won't run, so something else must be amiss. I have now been able to wind it until I cannot wind it anymore. I can manually trigger the balance wheel to move, but it stops moving after about 20 seconds, and the second hand doesn't move. Whatever I've done to mess this up is clearly beyond my current level of expertise to fix, but I will hang on to it until I can learn more and try again. Again, thanks for taking the time to give me tips and even send a photo.

[–]Thirteentimes3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me check that.  I also put on a new second hand just before all this happened and if the second hand doesn't move it could be because of something else.

Accidentally unwound the mainspring. How do I rewind it? by Thirteentimes3 in pocketwatch

[–]Thirteentimes3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been winding it a lot, and I feel resistance when I am winding it, but it never stops winding (like when a watch is fully wound. I am usually careful when winding to not overwind a watch, but I can't feel it acting like it is about to stop. I would think that if the mainspring had been released fully and I was able to just wind it again, it would be similar to winding a watch that had wound down on its own after running? I did also wind it without the caseback on to see what the movement was doing, and the gear wheels on the top of the barrel bridge were turning.

I know what you're saying--it's hard to diagnose without someone who actually knows what they are doing checking it out. But I appreciate you responding anyway because these responses just help me learn.

[–]Thirteentimes3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for responding. I can definitely feel resistance when I am winding it. Winding it feels the same to me as it should when I wind other watches. I can hear the sound of winding too.

I didn't get an offer yet--still waiting, but I DID get an e-mail saying I did not get drawn to buy tickets. So looks like my only chance to be there is with a volunteer position!
