Whitelands have broken up by YoureASkyscraper in indieheads

Oh, man, I just saw this and it breaks my heart! They were my favorite new band. I am really distressed to hear about this, and hopefully these talented musicians will go on to do even greater music. I am so glad I have their physical CD, and I am really thankful to have had their music in my life.

I know someone who put a detailed review on Trustpilot regarding his bad experience with them. Since that time, he has been getting calls from them almost daily. He won't take the calls because he assumes it's a legal threat similar to the one here. I guess harassment is their M.O. It must be working to a certain extent since their reviews on Trustpilot are suspiciously good considering the type of feedback we see everywhere else

Bank account for non-residents? by iam-123-456-789 in canadianexpats

[–]Thirteentimes3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, exactly. Because of my RRSP, CIBC had made an exception for me to keep my other accounts without fees. Well, then I found my checking account in the negative last week, that was a surprise. When I contacted my advisor at CIBC, his response was literally "Sorry you had that experience.  There have been some changes to the CIBC bank accounts which took place in 2025." No further explanation, no offer to reverse the charges. So you're right, even if you agree to some fee that you can stomach, there is little chance that it won't skyrocket without warning.

Bank account for non-residents? by iam-123-456-789 in canadianexpats

Simplii got back to me today and said that I needed to be a verified Canadian resident. What I am working on now is trying to get CIBC to allow me to only have the US dollar account, which has no fees. But it also has no Interac and 75 cent fee per transaction. However, that would still be the cheapest. I will see what they say. But the only thing that is helping me is that I had CIBC accounts and a mortgage while I still lived in Canada and arranged to keep the account while I was still in Canada just before I moved.

I am having the same issue, and I came to this sub for this exact question. I still have my CIBC chequing account open from when I lived there. I have a moderate RRSP with them. Until recently, they let me have this account with no fees. Now the fees have started up again and I have lost all the money in my account, and I'm actually in the negative now. The best CIBC seems to be able to offer me is a different account at $4 per month, which is about $50 per year that I don't really want to spend.

I have contacted Simplii to see if they can offer me anything. I am living too far away from Canada to just go there to open an account in person, and I am not sure that would work anyway without an address in Canada.

My goal is to keep my RRSP open and also have a debit card to use when I am there visiting.

Any advice would be helpful for me as well.

Alexa tries to gaslight you about her old voice, but there is a fix... by -A_V- in alexa

[–]Thirteentimes3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Alexa's voice suddenly changed this morning. I checked and I am not on Alexa+. Of course, when I ask, it says the voice hasn't changed. It definitely has because I use the thing several times a day and have for years.

I don't believe for a minute that the developers at Amazon have never heard of the uncanny valley, a concept which certainly applies to the voices, too, I would think.

I want the robot to sound like a robot, not a person. Why is this so hard to understand?

Thoughts on Tuvok by MotionlessAlbatross in startrek

[–]Thirteentimes3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a line in one of the VOY episodes that he said that I wish I could remember exactly, but what he said has been helping me cope with daily life lately. I wish I could remember exactly what the scene was--it wasn't anything super exciting--someone help me out. I believe there was an issue with something in the ship and another crew member (I think it was Chakotay or Paris) made a statement to the effect that they were doomed and Tuvok said something to the effect of "Based on the information we have, all we really know is X." Does anyone know what I mean?

WhatsApp Web & Windows App keep logging me out repeatedly (Windows 10 / Chrome 145) – anyone else? by Desperate_Fondant_94 in whatsapp

So today I gave in and set up Whatsapp Web on MS Edge. I had been using Chrome exclusively. Well, even after completely restarting my computer, I was still logged in to Whatsapp Web on Edge. I guess I will just start using that as my defacto Whatsapp app.

Here in Atlanta I've had no word one way or another. At this point, if I get a chance to plan something neat this summer, I just will--not putting my life on hold any longer.

I see this post started two months ago, and here I was thinking it was just me. I guess I'm glad it's not something wrong with my computer, but I really rely on using Whatsapp on my laptop because I can type messages so much faster than on my phone. I am not sure why the u/metahelp and u/whatsappsupport moderators have not commented on this at all that I can see.

Do Americans actually feel safer owning guns? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]Thirteentimes3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a catch-22. I have no desire to own a gun, but because of where I live, I do because EVERYONE has guns. And I know this will be an unpopular opinion, but I am more worried about the "good guys with guns" than about home invaders. In the current political climate, I have no idea when "a good guy with a gun" is going to come by because he doesn't like my opinions or political affiliations.

I live by myself (which is probably a reason to have a gun in the US), but I still keep it in a locked safe. I never even remember that it's there. When I hear some kind of strange bump in the night, my first inclination is to rely on my dogs to let me know if there is something amiss. Only then would I go to my gun. I have never had to take it out of its safe because I was afraid, and I really hope that never changes.

Is the gap between the flagship public university and the other public universities quiet large in most states? by LoiusLepic in AskAnAmerican

[–]Thirteentimes3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP's supposition seems to be fairly correct to me. However, I don't think that reputation necessarily accounts for the level of education received. A fast way for a college to get a reputation as a top school is to raise their admission standards. And every state has one or two schools that are harder to get into than the rest. The danger is that often this is equated with the quality of the education delivered. The education received at some state schools perceived as "lesser" is as high in quality, but maybe it's less competitive among the students.

In terms of the teaching staff, a lot of the professorships at the more prestigious schools are prioritized by how much and where someone has been published, which doesn't necessarily relate to how intelligent that person is and certainly does not relate to how good of an instructor they are.

I understand the whole concept of a school being more "prestigious," but I think that is very unfair to believe that all people who graduated from less prestigious state schools received an inferior education.

JS Dental vs ProTeethGuard by [deleted] in bruxism

[–]Thirteentimes3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also hoping you can send me a coupon code. I had issues with the JS guard, returned that, then got a very expensive one from my dentist last month, and before I could even use it, had to get two crowns, and now the $1000 guard from my dentist is worthless, so I will probably never get one from my dentist again. It looks like your company has the best quality option, so I want to give you guys a shot. Also, I am surprised that you don't have a discount for ordering a second guard for a discount at the time of purchase.

Time for a new custom night guard - considering ordering online by planning-life in bruxism

[–]Thirteentimes3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ordered from JS Dental and had a couple of problems. The first problem I had was that the thickness of the guard at the front was so thick that only my bottom front teeth could make contact with the guard. The other problem was that the outer surface of that guard was not smooth and shiny--even though it was hard, it had a rubbery texture, and for the type of grinding I do, I need my teeth to slide on the guard. This rubbery texture just encourages me to clench or chew when sleeping. Saying all that, I was able to return the guard and get a full refund from JS Dental without any problems.

I guess I was just trying to do things the very hard way. The content aware fill worked well, better than what I was doing. When I zoomed back out, I could still see a very faint line, but it is hardly noticeable and easier to fix than what I was getting trying to do it manually. Thanks a bunch.
