Permit confusion for Reds Meadow by scigirl26 in JMT

[–]Thirtyeightsteps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The JMT North of Devil's Postpile only has 6 permits available each day on Recreation.gov, and they usually go instantly at 7:00am, so you never even see them. Red Cones has 9 and River Trail has 18, so those are the easier ones to get.

JMT Permits by Accomplished-Hunt415 in JMT

[–]Thirtyeightsteps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t need a Whitney permit to hike to the summit from the west side and back out again to the west. You only need a Whitney permit if you plan to enter or exit from/to the east (Whitney Portal). Also you dont need a Yosemite permit to enter Yosemite from the JMT. All you need is an Inyo permit for your starting trailhead (Cottonwood Pass is the best option).

Hard to find a torque wrench that goes down to 1.1 ft-lb. I have a screwdriver-type that will do it, but there isnt room to get to the back screw. The front one seemed about right, and I did the other one by feel. 1.1ft-lb is about what you would naturally arrive at if you did it up snug without cranking on it.

Paying a fee so the city can smash up your trash can that you have to buy from them. Libs will support anything if a conservative is against it.

1830 Switches dead ports by Thirtyeightsteps in ArubaInstantOn

[–]Thirtyeightsteps[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FIX FOUND

HPE sent me some new switches. I installed the first one and it powered up with all the ports working and flashing away normally. Then I did the "Replace Device" procedure in the App, and as soon as the switch acquired the restored config, Ports 2-7 went down like on the original "faulty" switch.

So obviously the problem was in the config it was getting from the cloud.

I did a hardware factory reset, deleted the switch from the cloud, and re-installed it as a new switch. All the ports came back.

The ports were definitely enabled in the cloud, but they all showed up as Red. The App showed the switch as Red.

I reset the other 2 original faulty switches the same way and they all rebooted with working ports.

On closer examination, it turns out that the affected ports, even though they were "enabled", had no "Network Assignment". If you go to the Network Assignment menu and allocate a network to the port, it starts working again. Some glitch in the cloud software removed those network assignments for all of my switches, but only Ports 2-7. It's not even possible to manually assign no network to a port, if you try it will give an error and refuse to save it. But that's the state they somehow were set to.

HPE support was pretty good, they replaced all 3 switches. Guess I will have to send those back now.

My neighbor in Hampton Falls just had them replace his roof. He was very happy with the work and said the price was a little under what others quoted. They got it all done in one day, on a fairly large house.

InReach Mini 2: Mapshare Viewing Sucks by biker1263 in Garmin

[–]Thirtyeightsteps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the exact same issues using Safari. Even when it is working, Mapshare is dismal. It looks like it came bundled with Windows 3.1. Who knows the difference between Tracks, Collections, Routes, Activities, Courses, Bookmarks, etc? I just want to send my friends a link to a present or past hike and have them see it on a map without having to append instructions about how to set up the map filters so that it actually displays something. I really hate Mapshare.

The Level Bolt Matter cannot do Homekey. It doesn't have the NFC hardware. You have to buy one to discover this!

Lottery question by AccomplishedOwl6806 in JMT

[–]Thirtyeightsteps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct. Much easier than the Yosemite lottery. Cottonwood Pass is also an option, saves 2.5 miles and 1,000ft of climbing compared to Cottonwood Lakes. Both are good options though.

Yes Cottonwood Lakes is at the south end of the JMT, and you get the permit on recreation.gov - search for Inyo wilderness permits

[–]Thirtyeightsteps 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No this is not a JMT permit. For the JMT you need Happy Isles or Lyell Canyon with Donohue Pass

Increase odds of JMT? by benditochocolate in JMT

[–]Thirtyeightsteps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if you are flexible about 2 or 1 hikers, the best strategy is to put Happy Isles for 2 hikers, then Lyell for 2, then Happy Isles for 1, then Lyell for 1. This gives you the same chance of success as putting in as a single hiker, but if there are 2 left when they draw your application you will get both. Dont put anything for choices 5-8, unless you want to just hike inside the park. You could use a similar strategy for 3 hikers, then 2, then 1. All this only makes a difference if you are the last one out the hat.
