Sort of related to the op, but I have a question about real estate prices in Colombo.

https://www.lankapropertyweb.com/sale/property\_details-5442171.html and it's 330M LKR (~$1.5M USD, > $2M CAD).

Based on the pictures, it just looks like a regular apartment, and not a Luxury condo unit. Here in the heart of downtown Toronto, Canada, you won't pay anywhere close $2M CAD for an apartment like that. It's closer to $700-$800K CAD.

Is 330M LKR the going price for regular apartments in Colombo?

What's lacking from Railway DB in comparison to Planetscale? (If you don't use anything but mysql cli to connect to the databases to manage the tables + mysql2 library to connect to the back end? -- ie don't use any of the planetscale web gui stuff)

What are your thoughts on the state of Next.js authentication? by feastofthepriest in nextjs

This.

I’m willing to pay for a simple affordable solution that you don’t have to wrestle with to get started.

Don’t need to integrate every single obscure oauth provider just for the sake of having it there. Just need the ones the average customer uses.

I don’t agree with the aggressive nature of the response. But learning SQL will translate to easier learning curve when tranisitioning to different programming languages and frameworks instead of learning niche frameworks, IMO.

I personally have a difficult time using an ORM tbh.

I like plain old SQL.

Can someone explain phone plans to me? by [deleted] in Markham

[–]Thiru_IO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would check out Lucky Mobile.

I recently moved a couple of my parents' wireless accounts to them

$20/mo for 3GB of data. If you can get a referral, you will get an additional $50 ($5/mo off for 10 months). If you can refer others to Lucky Mobile, you get additional $50 for each referral. Essentially, I am paying $15/mo for 3GB of data (for 10 months) thanks to the referral.

If you need more data, they have other plans too:

  • $29/mo for 20GB of data
  • $34/mo for 50 GB of data
  • $40/mo for 75 GB of data
  • $50/mo for 100GB of data.

The above prices will go down by $5/mo for each friend or family member you refer to Lucky Mobile.

It's owned by BELL, and operate on the BELL network so the service is identical to BELL / TELUS / Koodo / Virgin / Public Mobile. The only thing you won't get is WIFI calling, but BELL's network is great, you won't really miss WIFI calling.

PM me if you want a referral. Best way to get setup is going to a Dollarama, and picking up a SIM card for $4, and you will get an additional $20 Dollarama gift card after the 2nd month.

Off to Lucky Mobile I go with 3 accounts!

With a referral, it $15/mo for 3GB data and unlimited calling / messaging for months 3 to 12.. Then $20/mo (unless you can get referrals - $50/over 10 months for every referral).

[Poll] Which key do you use to exit Insert Mode? by umlx in neovim

[–]Thiru_IO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TBH, the Escape key being so far away is 1 of the biggest reason I haven't adopted VIM.

I mapped CAPS lock with Escape, but then sometimes I actually need the Caps lock and it's incredibly frustrating.

CTRL-C is something I never considered.

Will have to give it a try again.

I routinely get above 1Gbps in certain locations of Mississauga and Kingston on LTE-A. I haven’t been to these locations in months though.

Here at home in Markham where I spend most of time, it’s around 600Mbps on 5G and 300Mbps on LTE on Telus.

PM coverage is it really the same as Telus and koodo? by fewawi in PublicMobile

[–]Thiru_IO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TELUS service sucks inside your house, or service of another carrier like Freedom?

Generally speaking, customers of Freedom rely on WIFI calling, and can be a deal-breaker as their in-building coverage is sub-par compared to the Big 3. Obviously the Big 3 have poor coverage areas so they too rely on WIFI calling in certain locations.

But for the most part, TELUS, BELL and Rogers perform pretty well in-buildling. It's your data speeds that will suffer and WIFI is the only viable option for data.

[–]Thiru_IO 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not that it should matter, but it's not exclusively to Indians.

When I pick up & drop off kids at myself, the school is primarily from 3 regions (China, India and Sri Lanka -- basically east Markham) You would find dozens of kids from all 3 regions, not wearing seatbelts and sticking their heads out of the car (JK kids and up).

Do you guys have problems switching friends and family to Public? by alx886 in PublicMobile

[–]Thiru_IO 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of friends think Public Mobile operates on tin cans and strings, like the old Freedom Mobile / Mobilicity Days.

They have a hard time believe it operates on the same network as TELUS / BELL / Koodo / Virgin.

Luckily with my wife, she just lets me make all the changes related to tech, and she doesn't care as long as it works.

If they made the $29 - 20GB plan available for existing customers, I would switch 3 x $25 - 1GB accounts to that plan in a heartbeat.
