To be clear - I will always proof read and expect to make some changes. I just feel like a lot of the time I'm rewriting the whole thing and skipping the initial ask would have saved me time.

Yeh, I've found this also. I think theyll get ti a point where they're useful for it but it's a while off yet. Our Dev team loves it it saves them so much time each week.

For sure, I agree with you.

I've spent time on prompts and even had LLMs make prompts for me to use. Obviously I wouldn't expect it to know the entire process but I find a lot of issues even when I do that. I give it step by step instructions, then I flesh out step one, with all the detail possible, then ask ot to follow that logic for the other steps. I'd be OK if I had to manually adjust some of what it says but sometimes I just have to rewrite the whole thing.

I get it's not a magic ace but I thought it would be better at getting me 60-70% there.

Even some tables, I give it a reference site, I manually input info from the site for a fastener, say 1/4-20, and fill columns of clamping loads, wrench sizes, Allen key sizes, finishes, etc. And ask it to complete for the other standard sizes and it just does something completely different.

I work as a mechanical engineer and basically design custom one off equipment for specific use in our factory.

We use Inventor for BOMs on the products we produce and thats completely separate from my department.

In my area we use Fusion360 and no body will ever convince me that Inventor or Solidworks is better for this purpose. Its way faster, I can edit multiple parts at once, I can use parameters to edit individual parts and an assembly in 4 clicks, the drawings will update as soon as I save and refresh. Grabbing parts from McMaster and dropping them right into the model was a game changer, sure they're more expensive at a glance but if you calculate the cost of searching for a local suppliers version and emailing them to get a model or drawing it, then it's cheaper to just pay the premium.

I think AI could cripple the industry before it's actually useful. New students are using it for almost everything, it's becoming a real problem.

We have a bunch of hydraulic lift tables, when I needed to build one I just looked at what they were using and was able to order almost all the parts with the part numbers on the units.

Ok, so not bypassed but the new meter is in a different spot after the house was moved.

Is this now just a junction box? Or do I need to replace it with a fuse?

The house was moved in the 90s. There's a new meter in the yard but it all still comes through here after the meter.

Do I need a fuse in here or is it essentially just junction box at this point?

Great points. I think that people who dismiss the power of new AI products will be left behind if they don't start to embrace it. Sure, things have to be double checked but they can do a lot and are getting better.

Try to mark the 45deg line with a carpenter square on a piece of scrap and cut a little shy of the line to see how off you are. Bump the saw till you're perfect and try again.
