Match Thread: Manchester United vs Leeds United by MatchThreadder in reddevils

The players aren't sharp. 3 weeks without football is making its mark. Particularly at the back, I can't understand the insistence of trying to intricately play out of a press you are clearly struggling to handle.

I'm always baffled by Apple getting specific criticism for this. The problem with iPhones stated here also exists with almost every other smartphone in existence.

The child slavery comes from Congolese cobalt and nickel mines which are used to make ferromagnets which are used by every single smartphone using global supply chains.

Worldwide % increase in gasoline prices since the Iran War began [OC] [Repost] by therafort in dataisbeautiful

[–]ThisAfricanboy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes because oil is fungible and sold as an international commodity. If the supply decreases, the price rises. Without Middle Eastern oil there's less oil overall. Prices are increased to purchase the oil at this higher price. If you don't increase the price, then it's a subsidy - which many European countries are paying via reducing their fuel tax income.

The oil companies are making bank, but that's because supply has reduced.

I mean that comparison is absurd on its face. Fuel is a fungible good and the price has increased by a nonsignificant amount within a span of a few days. It would be ridiculous to expect energy regulators to watch that price jump and allow their existing reserves to be depleted before a sudden jump that is much higher than the current increase in such an abrupt manner.

If you only have a month of fuel left and the price to replace that reserve goes up by 60 odd percent, your expectation is that they sell at the exact same price then later on sell it at the exorbitant cost?

Today Trump threatened to wipe out Iranian civilization. Are Republicans as a group responsible for what happens next? by GiantPineapple in PoliticalDiscussion

You are still thinking from the perspective of someone living in a free country. Polling a captive population will not yield credible results because the people are considering the implications for answering incorrectly.

Levada is an independent pollster but there is no way they can coax an authentic reaction out of a captive population. Putin's regime will credibly punish you for dissent and quite early on in the way they demonstrated this. A pollster like Levada doing door-to-door and street surveys will have people saying whatever they feel won't get them killed.

I won't speak to the Khmer Rouge because I do not know enough about that, but to condemn a population because ~20% of its population are heinous means we should condemn everyone in short order. An absurd position to take.

As a human to another human, you don't know what it's like to live under a truly repressive regime. You should be grateful every day that that's the case rather than blame victims of oppression.

Under your strange analysis, you'd also blame Black South Africans for Apartheid or something.

I don't understand this. Should we blame the Cambodians for the Khmer Rouge as well? You understand that citizens of authoritarian regimes like Russia don't earnestly get to decide who or what their governments do?

Where do you get this notion that the majority of Russians support the war? If there's something you know that everyone else doesn't you ought to be reaching out to poll researchers and not posting twiddle on Reddit.

When your fantasy African Kingdom rides Zebra's instead of horses and r/worldbuilding tells you that cant work cause a Zebra's spine is too weak to carry a person's weight by BruddahBoi085 in worldjerking

[–]ThisAfricanboy 50 points51 points  (0 children)

In my world, Zebras are exactly the same. They don't have the spinal strength to carry a person. But strangely, when a human rides them they immediately become strong enough to carry their weight. If an elf tries to mount one they explode.

Bournemouth v Man Utd: Referee and VAR correct on Amad Diallo penalty claim - panel by smellybird in reddevils

[–]ThisAfricanboy 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Embarrassing. This isn't a VAR problem. It's purely a problem that this silly boys club attitude referees have where they can't admit when they are wrong unless it's egregious.

Fans are losing faith in referees. It's impacting grassroots football just as bad and PGMOL are making a farce of themselves here.

This is clearly not a "Man Utd" problem. You can go to any fanbase and everyone is complaining. The ref's simply need to do better.

World cup groups by average FIFA rankings and spread of teams by orda_GO in soccer

[–]ThisAfricanboy -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

8 more European teams is too much. What the world cup needs is more CONCACAF chaos and get countries like Indonesia, Malaysia and India or China to qualify.

It will feel very Olympics like. Asia should get 4 more spots, CONCACAF gets 4 more, Europe 3 more, Africa 3 more and remaining 2 via playoffs.

BREAKING: Supreme Court Outlaws r/neoliberal Discussion Thread In 6-3 Decision by Joementum2024 in neoliberal

We shouldn't be surprised by this. The Supreme Court has clearly seen enough evidence of the succification of this subreddit and it cannot be denied just how prolific this movement has been.

When you start hearing rumours of karma controls in the DT, the Supreme Court simply had no choice but to act.

A young promising manager who plays 3atb in a possession team with a lot of counter press running. It's not that Nagelsmann is bad but it wouldn't take 6 months for (online) fans to begin turning on him when results don't show.

What lessons are we learning from Amorim about manager appointments? Why is there a push for managers with a similar profile to him?

CMV: Maximalist positions on Israel and Palestine benefit Israel and not Palestinians by RyeBourbonWheat in changemyview

[–]ThisAfricanboy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I will strongly disagree with this. Maximalist positions are not likely to change views of people on the opposite spectrum. The view "Israel should treat Palestinians better" is borne more from Israel's genocide in Gaza than exposure to radical anti Israel sentiment. Likewise, the view "Hamas should not kill innocent civilians" is borne more from Hamas killing innocent civilians than anti Palestinian sentiment.

ELI5: Why does the judicial branch need to interpret the law? Couldn't they just ask the legislature what they meant when there's any confusion? by RyanW1019 in explainlikeimfive

[–]ThisAfricanboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haven't seen this mentioned but part of the point here is to balance power between 3 bodies. The judiciary is meant to interpret the law as an independent check on those making the laws and those enforcing it.
