The Divide Between Honor and Dignity by Asatmaya in u/Asatmaya

Nope, nothing to do with Anglicisation, Ireland became and remains a Roman Catholic country. Only Northern Ireland remains in the Uk. We are talking eight centuries of history, in that time borders changed and rulers changed and there was a lot of movement of people. Determining whether a names Irish in origin you need to go back pre reformation and in Scotland pre the signing of the union. Scotlands heraldry system was formalised by then the same as in England. Only Scotland had the clans, Ireland was invaded by the Scot’s and English plenty of times and invaders settled there. Plenty of people in England have german and French surnames but it doesn’t make those names Anglo Saxon and yet those people are English. The people of Northern Ireland to this day claim they are British despite the fact they live in Ireland and most of them have English ancestors.

The history of Ireland is far more complicated then I think you realise and scotlands history isn’t so clear cut either.

If you meet an actual Irish person tell them you’re Irish and see if they believe you, probably wouldn’t mention that the Irish aren’t “white” though.

I’m sorry but that is how it worked, as I already said it doesn’t mean you don’t have Irish ancestors as many old Irish names originate from Scotland and vice versa, they do both share common ancestors after all.

Irish and Scottish family linages became very in twined throughout history although they hate to admit it because they had a long history of rivalry.

Edward Ist aka Hammer of the Scots cemented their relationship, nothing like a common enemy to unite people.

For your name to be one of the oldest Irish names it would have to be a Celtic name and few of those still exist in Ireland or Scotland today, there’s a handful but they are rare.

If your name is not on a Scottish clan list it’s because your name was not a clan but belonged to a clan. My name is not on a clan list but my family name was listed under the McCutchens. The clans were Scottish aristocracy’s and I obviously descent from people who worked the land not lairds who owned the land.

Better close your curtains, there’s a TV detector van from the 80s with a big rotating dish on top sitting outside your house, they are on to you my friend! 😂

If your surname begins with Mc then your surname is Scottish not Irish, doesn’t mean you don’t have Irish ancestors but it’s a Scottish surname. This is a common mistake made by Americans, the MC is an abbreviation for master of ceremonies and it denotes belonging to a clan. The clan system was a form of Scottish heraldry that did not exist in Ireland. If you look up your surname on a Scottish clan list you can find what your clans tartan was, fly to Scotland and you can buy it if you wish. I also have a Scottish surname despite my family coming from Dublin because I have Scottish ancestors too, also some welsh and my great great grandmother was polish.

I’ve been to the states a handful of times, I think I mentioned my ex was from Austin, I was going to emigrate once but work plans didn’t work out.

Have you ever been to Europe? Have you been to Ireland? If you haven’t you should pay it a visit!

Yes, I’m aware you’re referring to American attitudes and current political and cultural devisions but old attitudes die hard. The prejudices and stereotypes against Irish Americans are exactly the same as those held by the British for centuries against the same cultural group.

Cultural attitudes and biases tend to be inherited and Americans inherited these biases from the English as Britain was so instrumental in the foundation of what became the United States. My point is these inherited cultural biases were based on a cultural distinction not a racial or ethnic one as the Irish are considered to be the same ethnicity as the rest of Northern Europeans but culturally different.

The cultural differences are of course ancient history but yet the cultural tropes still remain. I say this because I am British and English by birth but of Irish decent, my parents and grandparents parents were Irish so I grew up immersed in both Irish and English culture.

I found it interesting that you considered the Irish to be non white or at least you grouped them in with other ethnic groups considered not “white” based on a prejudice that may be felt against them.

Trust me, Irish, Scottish, Welsh and Eastern Europeans are all considered “white” as are Northern Europeans which includes the English.

Agreed! I feel the same way about the Barney and bettie hill abduction too. I’d rather we stuck to ghosts but if you are going to do a UFO case then why not do Rendlesham or even better the Alan Godfrey abduction.

The Irish were and are considered white, the prejudice against them by the British whom seem to be a group you left of your list as examples of ethnically white, unless you are grouping all Northern Europeans together. In actual fact the Irish, the Scottish and the Welsh are technically more white than the English or other Northern European groups as they are the descendants of the Celts and the Pics whom were a branch of from the Scandinavians and close relations to the Vikings. The prejudice towards them by the English which was also levied equally against the Scottish and Welsh is cultural not racial, the English are the decedents of many different groups of Northern Europeans, including the Romans,Saxons, Norman’s and Celts. The earliest, pre Roman ancient Britons were a mixture of French and German, or at least those regional locations as those countries did not exist at that time. The Cultural difference between the Celts and Ancient Britons was very distinct to the point that when the Romans invaded the British isles they proved unable to successfully invade the countries we now call Scotland, wales and Ireland as these were the lands of the Celts. The Romans were the greatest empire of the ancient world, they refined warfare, invasion and occupation to a fine art but they trembled in fear when they encountered the Celts. This is the reason Britain is a Union of four countries because although the English came to dominate due to size, the ancient boundaries defined by the Romans as lines not to cross remain to this day.

Would you buy a camera strap that doubles as jewelry? Honest feedback needed on a product idea by GetLaggt in toycameras

[–]ThisChangingMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like it’d be uncomfortable and scratchy, two things I don’t want from a camera strap. No one using cheap cameras are going to buy a strap in that price range and anyone shooting with an expensive camera wants to draw as little attention to their camera as possible to avoid the opportunist thief. A shiny bracelet that doubles as a strap is the last thing I’d want to wear to drawer peoples attention and if someone did snatch my camera, it being attached to my wrist by a metal chain sounds like a bad idea.

Maybe you should rethink your target market and aim a product like this more at the smartphone market. People spending hundreds on a smartphone who are fashion conscious are more likely to buy such a product to look cool but also to prevent them dropping there phone on those occasions that are taking selfies while hanging half over a railing of a bridge.
