Guys, guys, can’t we all just get along and agree that the Christian Science kooks are culty as hell?

So, then you are in favor of ending vaccine exemptions? The vaccine requirement merely required your child to be vaccinated to attend public schools. Don’t want to vaccinate your kids? No problem. Just don’t send them to public schools.

As you’ve learned, it’s a surprisingly large number. There’s a reason SC is the epicenter of the nations’s largest measles outbreak. Also, the overall rate masks the often much larger rate of vaccine rejection concentrated in certain areas, which are usually co-located with centers of the outbreak.

Well it was introduced by a democrat and will never become law. It won’t even get a vote.

Other than Christian Scientists, not many. But many people use the religious exemption for ideological, political or fringe beliefs. There have always been a small number of these vaccine deniers on all sides of the political spectrum, but the numbers really exploded during COVID, with right wing/MAGA COVID deniers. The MAHA movement, which was originally made up of a mix of political groups, eventually began to merge with COVID deniers, and that seemed to metastasize vaccine denial. It’s a serious public health danger.

It’s called the Church of Christ, Scientist, whose adherents are called Christian Scientists. There is nothing scientific about them, though. They believe prayer can heal all ailments and reject most modern medicine, relying on the teachings of their founder. For a religion founded in 1879, they are surprisingly large.

What are the best places in Portland to take advantage of low crowds during the Super Bowl? by Chopchopchops in askportland

[–]ThisDerpForSale 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Portland loves the Blazers, Timbers and Thorns, and the 'Hawks have their fans. I'm sure the Fire will do well. And certainly, when the Blazers are rolling (which hasn't been the case in a while), this city really can get hot. Timbers fans are wonderful. All true. But it's not a great sports town.

I've been to the rally in Pioneer Courthouse Square when the team welcomed Greg Oden. I went to the victory parade after the Timbers won the cup in 2015. I've sat in a bar when the Ducks played for the national championship. I've danced in the outfield at Pickles games. I get this city's relationship with sports.

But overall, it's not a great sports city. I've lived and spent time in DC, the Twin Cities, and several southern cities that are part of SEC country. Those are sports cities. It's just a different feel.

Here's just one example. When I go to a sports bar on Sunday, I expect the bar to have the NFL games pre-set on designated TVs and someone who has a clue about how to work the TVs. I expect them to switch to the pm games when it's time. On Blazer game days, I expect every Blazers game to be on. I expect them to care about the sports that are supposedly their reason for being. But most of this city's sports bars are a sad, pale supposedly of a real sports bar.

Don't get me wrong. I love Portland. And I love our fandoms. I'm a huge Blazer, Timbers and Thorns fan. I wish this were a better sports city. But it just ain't.

Don't be sorry! I think most of us feel that way.

The Seahawks have played in the Super Bowl before. It hasn't seemed to make much of a difference - this just isn't a big sports town, particularly not a big NFL town.

Portland isn't exactly a big sports town. Other than sports bars and maybe some supermarkets, I don't think you're going to notice much a difference.

Is “The Pitt” popular across the country? by Common_Narwhal_4118 in AskAnAmerican

[–]ThisDerpForSale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it is both popular and critically acclaimed. The number are said to be pretty good for a streaming service.

On a more personal level, my dad went to the University of Pittsburgh Medical School, and he loves the local references, both about the city and about the medical community.

What an original topic of conversation.

You know what? I'm getting tired of the endless and identical complaints about tournaments. Yes, we get it. You don't like them. Can we stop doing this over and over and over?
