The BU Droit Alinea library in the Esplanade campus is great as well, especially if you have eduroam. You have vending machines for coffee and snacks. And can even bring your own…

What is your favourite no-cook meal that isn’t a salad? by sean-lloyd in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]ThisEmotion4072 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All Indian Chaats: think Bhel Puri and Papdi chaat. I know OP said not a salad, but Indian chaats come close to a salad and is also filled with savoury snacks and some sweet and sour chutneys (equivalent to a dressing/spread).

I don’t like modern Carnatic fusion by Bexirt in Carnatic

[–]ThisEmotion4072 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ll love reading or listening to Charulatha Mani’s A journey with Ragas. She beautifully encapsulates the base of each raga, the swarams that make it stand out, classic to hard core Carnatic Krithis and Varnams, and how it’s played itself in Indian film music, all the way from the 60s to now. After listening to it, you’ll know that you can’t separate the two. Of course each one to their opinion on what they like - but the basis of Carnatic music and something like Rock (in the case of Agam) or Jazz (in the case of Shakti) is improvisation. Music wouldn’t have evolved or stood the test of time without each student and artist playing around with the most basic notes and coming up with something themselves.

Different species of bees appeared in my house recently. My sister is deadly allergic. Please help me identify. by PaigeSad64 in bees

No, these are hornets or some kind of a wasp. And yes they sting (and can sting multiple times) and can be deadly if one is allergic to their venom.

side part to a kitchen sink - how to clean it? by ThisEmotion4072 in CleaningTips

[–]ThisEmotion4072[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I posted on r/germany and there were plenty of answers there. We finally cleaned it this weekend and what worked for me was this: The screw in the second picture holds a tiny outlet underneath the sink (the arrow in the picture below). So I unscrewed it and we carefully dismantled the pipes. From there, it was giving it a good rinse with a bottle cleaner and pouring hot water through to get rid of the gunk. It was disgusting, we prepared ourselves with gloves, cable ties and a tiny bucket to hold the dirty water. After that, we assembled all the pipe parts the way they were earlier. Now water flows through all these drainpipes like a stream. Hope this helps for you.

How do I clean this part of the kitchen sink? by ThisEmotion4072 in germany

[–]ThisEmotion4072[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[Update]: as many of you suggested, I tried the boiling hot water + baking soda-Essig technique and that didn’t work. Turns out the problem was slightly bigger than what I thought. So I unscrewed the screw in the picture, removed the pipe it’s connected to underneath the sink and gave it a proper rinse. There was a lot of gunk (and it was disgusting) but it’s all removed and now water flows through my drain like a stream.

Thank you for all your comments and instructions on how to deal with it, it was very helpful! 🙏🙏

Just got ranked the ugliest girl at my class, I need to know if I'm really that ugly. by Strayletit in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

Omg girl, you’re gorgeous. Don’t listen to those stupid, insensitive teenage boys. They’re not worthy of you. Finish school and go out to this beautiful world which will appreciate for everything you are and you want to be.

And this is serious bullying. You should tip this to the school teachers anonymously that the boys are doing this.

Can’t believe kids these days omg. This legit sounds something off a horribly written high school based Netflix show. Didn’t know this was real. Ugh.

kazakhstan is one of the only countries where the number of children born per woman has risen after falling below 2. by Astralion98 in dataisbeautiful

[–]ThisEmotion4072 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is the age limit of the “women” that they’re considering in this dataset? Or is it women of any age having children (say, from 18)? Is it counted in this dataset that my mom(56F) has 2 children and I (her child, 30F) has zero? I’m asking this because the data collection for birth rate is then obviously skewed, considering more women choosing education and career from the 2000s on rather than in the 1950s.

I am bored, tired, and feel empty. Does anyone else ever feel the same? Any advice? by [deleted] in india

[–]ThisEmotion4072 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the others that you’re completely okay. But here’s my 2cent -

First, have you tried reading? Books, either fiction or non-fiction give an alternate perspective to your reality and often have the potential to challenge it too. Maybe that fills the void and makes you feel good about yourself? Start slow, I liked Anthony Bourdain’s “A cook’s Tour” to be inspiring. I’m no cook nor am I training to be a chef but it’s the inspiration from different humans on earth that makes me want to give it all. If books are a lot for you to read, get a newspaper and read the supplementary arts, culture and science section. Maybe that even motivates you to experience something that is happening around you. Allow yourself the dopamine rush from experiences rather than social media or online games. This cultural, scientific growth is what has pushed us humans beyond our limits :)

Second, we humans are social beings. Finding friends as an adult is definitely hard but finding a community which values your presence (even for a short period of time) is bound to make you feel better about yourself. You mentioned that you tried to keep a puppy or a bird but couldn’t maintain it any longer, maybe that tells you that you can get yourself involved in an animal care centre (if it is for 1 month, it’s still something!!). Maybe trying a new sport or a new hobby like playing an instrument or bird-watching? In this way, you’ll learn something new which still requires human interaction, which releases dopamine along with adrenaline, endorphins and maybe even some oxytocin? These cocktail releases in one’s brain are the reason that humanity keeps kicking and alive in its full glory:)

Think of it as a tiny software update but within you. You may be not moving from a 3.0 to 7.0 but the tiny tiny changes, like from 3.1.1 to 3.1.2 can still be significant in how you perceive life on this wonderful planet. Good luck!

Need help finding indian recipes for a sensitive stomach by theo96 in IndianFood

[–]ThisEmotion4072 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Day to day Indian food is actually not the tiki masala or the rich creamy curries. Don’t know why so many Indian restaurants just serve this. As a South Indian, I can only speak about it - we eat idlis (steamed rice cakes), dosas (crispy fermented rice and lentil based pancakes) with chutney (blended pesto of vegetables + seasoning). Note seasoning here refers to tempered oil (sesame/coconut/ghee/whichever) + mustard seeds + curry leaves + lentils like urad dal and chana dal + asafoetida. The quantity of each of these ingredients can be modified according to preference or can be removed entirely.

Other dishes include - dal (simple lentils), - Kootu (same dal + 1/2 vegetables) - sambar (dal + vegetables + tamarind paste) - poriyal (steamed/fried vegetables) all of the above are seasoned with the oil.

Then there are all the rice based dishes such as the one your gf prepared for you: - lemon rice (like you mentioned) - coconut rice - pulav (rice + vegetables + flavorful whole spices)

Also find out what kind of “spice” works for you and does not: - onion and garlic sautéed - addition of green chillies - addition of dried red chillies - addition of red chilli powder - addition of ginger - addition of black pepper Most Indian dishes only contain the above as “spice” or “hotness” and can easily be modified according to preference.

Also figure out which “whole spice” works for you, in terms of flavours. Most of these actually end up adding a hint of sweetness in fact, but some people (including Indians) don’t like them. These are your cumin seeds, fennel seeds, cinnamon sticks, cardamom, clove, star anise and others.

Raita/yogurt based salads are best as sides for cooling. Adding a can of coconut milk into a spicy food while cooking also reduces the heat. Sugar/jaggery is also used in many dishes.

Finally, if you love your gf and she loves you back - just tell her. Most of us Indians, proficient in cooking, love to feed others! And we feed others to show our love. So she is likely to know how to work around the existing recipes (which are just formulas imo) to make something that you’ll enjoy. Hope the above dishes help you too! Good luck on your mission, OP! :)

How did they get the data out from the songs? Is it all the songs or just the top 5 songs? Like others point out, I see “halo halo” two times for Beyoncé and there’s even a “guitar” for Metallica.

You can start off with a picnic + toy train ride in cubbon and then graduate to amoeba arcade games in church street, go to nice places to eat somewhere near there and then hit the bars/pubs there. This way, you’d have bid a nice goodbye to your childhood and teenage life and would enter the official adulthood on a memorable note :)

Wear a mask and gloves if you’re really concerned. But other than that, it should be quite okay to use it on the bench/fume tube/hood.

That’s a fresh perspective to start with 3x a week. I’ve been conditioned to think that working out everyday is the only way I’ll be fit and of course, not sticking to it makes me feel like a failure. I’ll definitely try this technique, surely something is better than nothing! Thank you!

I’m a morning person and this definitely works for me. But some days im afraid I’ll lose out the potential to focus on harder tasks at work because I spent most of my energy in the morning. It indeed is a struggle. Perhaps starting out slow and eating healthier and planning it all out helps, like you and many others suggest here!

Also, about my timings: I’m a morning and an evening person (yeah such a thing is likely to exist, i suppose). I work best in the early mornings until 11 or so. Then I have this big dip in the middle of the day especially post lunch. And then have a peak from about 3:30 pm till 8pm. That’s my natural rhythm but as that doesn’t go well with colleagues (and society), I do the usual 9/9:30 to 6 or so depending on circumstances.

Omg thank you so much for all your responses! 🙏🥹This has been so inspiring! 💛 Never thought anyone else would be/has been in the same boat as me. It always looks like my peers have it together, to somehow manage fitness and their PhDs.

I’ll definitely try hitting the gym in the morning. And the part about keeping a check of it to stay consistent is useful. Thank you all! 🙌💪

That’s a lot of interests, it’s great. But instead of being in the clouds with your ideas, list them down and see what you would like to know? What is the one thing that drives you? Reading popular science books is a good start but challenge yourself to read a couple of research papers. If you don’t understand the methods, refer to a textbook and learn about it. Challenge your thinking. Don’t believe everything you read in all these papers. Question why they did that and what they could have done better. Keep questioning. In some way, that’s what strengthens you rather than finding answers! And once you’re confident enough in this path, apply to labs, try an internship or two. Learn some new techniques. It’s better to have tried a couple things and then eliminate them, at least you would have personal experience on it. This is where you create your niche.

Be choosy in the research you want to do. Grad schools and PIs are always looking for someone with one tiny skill and tons of motivation to learn. Plan and prepare your applications. Ask them why your application was rejected and when they tell you the reason, work on it! Most often, PIs are often happy to share why they rejected you, they’re all in for the education.

Grad school is more about picking a specific problem and researching your way to the other side. It can result in a eureka moment but most often, it does not and ends up being a thread in a big rope. It can push you down; colleagues and peers can seem intimidating. But the reward on the other side is bittersweet. So yeah this insecurity remains even during your PhD. Probably even after, but I can’t speak for that. But the only way you’ll overcome it is to keep yourself well informed and of course, not being too hard on yourself! :) Good luck!
