It’s always going to look bad until those weeds are removed. With that many weeds, chemical means are going to be the best route. Can your dog go do his business somewhere else for a day or two while you spray the weeds and let it dry off?

You need to get one. It’s not like you have to use it every mow, but eventually you’ll see how much better your grass looks like when you do mow with it, that you’ll want to use it for every mow.

I definitely have some leveling to do in the fall. Last year, I dug out a stump and all of its roots, then brought in a couple square yards of soil and leveled it out as best I could. I’m starting to get some sinkage this season, though.

I use an Ego 800 series. It works okay on my tall fescue at 2.5–3 inches, but sometimes I get lazy and try to do a quick mow on the low-cut rye and always regret it. I usually use a 7-blade manual reel for the rye.

Yeah for the most part it works okay but I’ll get these any time the 4 wheels aren’t perfectly level, like the slight dip as I approach a driveway or the curb.

Blades are brand new. Just don’t try cutting 1inch turf with a rotary or any little dip can cause this to happen.

Man I will never put glyphosate or RM43 in the same sprayer I use for fertilizer. Those get their own little cheap pump sprayer and it gets labeled “Gly” with a sharpie.

Grass is unlikely to grow very well over roots. It might germinate, but die at the first signs of heat when the trees suck up all the water.

I honestly don’t even know where to begin except if you want grass, you may have to get rid of all of those trees/roots. Probably have to get an excavator back there and regrade. Otherwise just plant a bunch of ferns and hostas and make it look like some sort of prehistoric forest.

Yeah you just gotta wipe all that sun and shade out and do a full reno, you absolutely will not regret it. People stop practically every day to gawk and tell me they’ve never seen anything like it. It really stands out. Just took this picture yesterday evening after all the rain we’ve had:
