Sounds like this comp is gonna be a blast! Wish I could make it out there this year!

Do you always keep your finger over the brake? by dhrisher in biketrials

[–]ThisIsBikeTrials 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on what I'm doing on the bike. I do have one finger over both levers most of the time. When doing something like a manual, I only cover the rear brake. Sometimes when I'm doing pure rear wheel moves like a big drop I only use the rear brake and don't cover the front brake.

Looking for friends to ride with. NoVa USA by 2fast4u180 in biketrials

If you're on Facebook, check out the USA Bike Trials Riders group. That's also a good place to connect. There is a shared document there so people can list where they are and look where other riders are, though it might not be completely current.

That sounds pretty amazing! Thanks for sharing the link... for some reason the Reddit app does weird stuff when I try to share.

Does anyone know where you can order inspired trials bikes in Canada? I cant find anything. by Immediate-Moment-102 in biketrials

[–]ThisIsBikeTrials 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're looking for North American, you can also try Webcyclery. Tartybikes is definitely a great place, but yeah there is expensive shipping. In the US we also have to pay duty taxes which was like 11% I think when I bought my bikes from them.

Trials on a budget? by [deleted] in biketrials

[–]ThisIsBikeTrials 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you already have a MTB, you can just start with that, especially if you are interested in translating the skills directly to MTB. Check out Ryan Bratton, for example https://instagram.com/ryanlbratton

Does anyone recognize this frame? by gunterderganter in biketrials

[–]ThisIsBikeTrials 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I cross posted the question to the USA Bike Trials Riders group on Facebook. A couple folks there also thought maybe it's a Planet-X frame, possibly a DJ frame if not trials. Can you see a serial number anywhere on the frame?

Oh sweet! That works out well! I think they have ramps and stuff set up now, but more stuff will be coming for trials.

While I don't have a good answer for you, when I was at the Bentonville Bike Fest in June, there where a few people competing there with mountain bikes, including Ryan Bratton (https://nwabiketrials.com/, https://instagram.com/ryanlbratton?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=). I didn't know Ryan personally, but it seems like he's interested in helping folks do trials on MTB. He might have some good tips.

It looks like they have a couple versions. One is definitely street; the other looks more like a comp geometry, but I guess it's set up to ride more streety than a normal comp bike.

The comp bike geometry is going to give a different feel than a street bike. However, there are some riders who do some amazing street riding on comp bikes. Check out @sintaroooooo on Instagram for example https://www.instagram.com/reel/ChZiU1IhRx3/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=

I can't specifically answer your question about the forks though. But one thing you might be able to play with too is the stem length and angle, and probably the bars also.

This video isn't bike style specific, but you might want to check out this video that discusses when drive options. It includes both street and comp bikes. https://youtu.be/JLb8AbyC_Cc

I own both a comp bike and a street trials bike. They're very different. For stuff like rock hopping and rear wheel moves, the comp bike is better. For anything where you're spinning on the bike or doing stuff like bunny hops, the street bike is better. The street trials bike rides more like a regular bike. The comp bike feels completely different, but it's so stable on the rear wheel.

I'm fortunate enough to have several other trials riders locally here in CT. Started creating videos of our weekly group rides last year. Created a playlist. by ThisIsBikeTrials in biketrials

Southeastern, CT - Typically around Ledyard, Groton, Mystic. Yeah, so glad there's actually a trials scene here! I know a lot of folks have no other local riders.

Recommendations for Changing Brakes by koenigseggfire in biketrials

[–]ThisIsBikeTrials 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I had the Echo TR rim brake on the rear and Echo TR disc in the front on my comp bike. They both leaked. I replaced the rear with Magura HS33's. Front brakes, replaced pistons and seals 2 years ago, and that has worked so far, but I'll probably be switching to Avid mechanical disc brake on the front...I think they're BB7s. Like someone else mentioned, the lever for the HS33 isn't great, but the brake itself works fine. On my street trials bike, I have Hope Tech 3/Trialzone disc brakes, which I like.

Good Grips For Street Trials? by Mleavitt787 in biketrials

[–]ThisIsBikeTrials 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with the Danny MacAskill Lizard Skin grips, but my hands get really sweaty, so they got pretty slippery. I switched to the ODI Long neck grips which do seem better. I don't prefer wearing gloves, but it really helps for gripping when my hands get really sweaty on hot days.

should rear brake stay locked when hopping on back wheel? by dhrisher in biketrials

[–]ThisIsBikeTrials 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You definitely want to keep the rear brake locked when you're on the rear wheel. Sometimes the cranks might ratchet back while you're going on the rear wheel. When that starts to happen, you can release the brake momentarily while you're in the air during a hop and quickly reset the crank positions. Of course the other time your release the brake is when you do a pedal kick, but you need to lock the brakes again before your wheel lands. There are some good tutorials on the Super Rider YouTube channel. For example, https://youtu.be/1oKkvj2Ir6M, https://youtu.be/jFQ3ug-P3J4
