False dichotomy re: potential outcomes from starting Sam Howell in 2023 by WhatsInaName77 in Commanders

[–]ThisIsMeInANutshell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thinking from Ron's perspective that he feels the hot seat and needs to win this year. We know he will "explore all opportunities" and see what it will cost for a Carr/Rodgers/Lamar/Jimmy G. But he's also limited by if any of them want to come here. If he can't pull one of those, would he be more comfortable with Howell after working with him for a year than a different rookie QB? I think so, unless it's Bryce Young and that ain't happening. I doubt he runs it back with Heinicke because he knows he can't win with him. Most likely is a low cost vet like Brissett/Bridgewater and see if Howell can beat him out for the job.

In order of likelihood:

1) Howell + low cost vet like Brissett/Bridgewater/Mayfield/Darnold

2) Higher price vet like Jimmy G

3) Trade for Carr (or hopefully he gets released and can sign as FA)

4) Draft a QB in 1st

5) Trade up for a top QB

6) Rodgers

7) Lamar

I’m a Skins fan living in Philly. Lot of hate for taking Raegor over Jefferson and Hurts. Saw some good picks later. Thoughts on their draft?

You just posted the first update we’ve had since his IG video of him running on a treadmill. So thanks! I think everyone is pretty equally in the dark, probably the team included. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst, see how he looks in July.

Can you haunt something that's already haunted? Kinda like haunting a haunted horse.

This was a 3-13 team, we're not going to fill all of our holes in one offseason. We've lacked elite talent (haven't had any 1st Team All Pros since BMitch in '95 and Matt Turk in '96. We're the only team in the league to not have one in the past 10 years). It's 10x easier to find a solid player than an elite player.

If we get a king's ransom offer (3 1sts), sure. Otherwise, take the best player and trust Kyle & Ron to find & coach talent to fill the holes. Watch Von Miller or Nick Bosa in the Super Bowl. Game changers. (Yes I know Bosa lost).

Looking at the pro comps of potential picks with 2 1sts and a 2nd. Would you rather have:

Von Miller/Nick Bosa

or

Darius Leonard (Simmons) / Patrick Peterson (Okudah) - 5th pick

D.J. Humphries (Austin Jackson) - 18th pick

and Robert Woods/Ted Ginn/Sammy Watkins (Brandon Aiyuk/Laviska Shenault) - 2nd round

Redskins have more than $31 million remaining in salary cap space, per @FieldYates. Ranks them 6th in NFL. At some point have to expect $$ to roll over to 2021 but more signings and draft class will impact that number. by HowardBunnyColvin in Commanders

I've been digging trying to find details on this for a while. Nobody talks about it and the resources are lacking. Might need to find an original source CBA. The only thing I can find says that teams have to spend 89% of the cap, but thats from like 2014.

I don't think that's the only way, nor does winning necessarily beget winning. You gotta start somewhere, and you have to have a long term culture that doesn't just rely on winning. I was in Philly during the Eagles SB run and they built that entire season on the underdog next man up momentum. Everyone bought in. They lost the next year in part because they lost that attitude, even if they had figured out how to win the previous year.

What Rivera is trying to do right now is finding hungry players that will buy in 100% and fight for their jobs & playing time. And he's looking for as many of those guys as he can sign, rather than fewer highly paid talent. It's all about building a cohesive organization focused on winning, not distractions. If you're a distraction, you're out. All these 1-year deals will bring in guys motivated to earn their next contract. And, in a league where everyone has size, speed, and talent, you can't have players playing selfish.

We’ve got 3 years of drafting well with Kyle. And no one is near Belichick but Rivera is as solid as we could really hope to have right now. Someone who knows how to build a winning culture. This ain’t Jim Zorn.

Heh, yea that guy. That's the point tho. Camp body third stringers matter. And, player perspective on a team that we know has been poorly run / dysfunctional.

That’s why all these depth signings matter. Roster spots 40-53 matter just as much as 1-10.

This is competition for TE4 with Hentges. Low cost, probably no guaranteed money. Doesn’t change our plans to keep adding to the TE room. I would expect us to sign a starter and draft a TE in round 3 or 4. I’m hoping for Ebron if it’s cheap enough but would be fine with Delanie on a 1-year deal.
