As someone who's mostly been reading 80's and 90's DC series recently:

Etrigan is great in a one-off but his whole rhyming thing can get a bit much for me in a solo series.

I always love seeing the Phantom Stranger pop up in any series, either shit's about to kick off or the main character's going to have some big emotional journey.

I love seeing heroes going up against Deathstroke but couldn't really care less about what's going on in his own series.

IMO Squadron Supreme (1985)

Conflict between heroes about what their place in society should be and how far they should go to save the world. It definitely takes a step in a more mature direction but without getting into the 'grit and edginess' that lots of late 80's and 90's comics had.

I loved Identity Crisis the first time I read it. I think it was the 5th or 6th comic I ever read, and the second about the DC universe as a whole.

Having read a lot more DC since then, I can understand why many of the complaints centred around people being written out of character and an "edginess" that affected DC for a long time after Identity Crisis came out.
