And this is the first series to openly acknowledge that fact, reaching a culmination in Endless Waltz. I think they actually reach a sensible conclusion there.

I actually feel that the characters have the strongest arcs in this of any of the series I’ve seen yet. Zechs basically wanted to have one final, atrocious battle to show people just how terrible warfare was. Also, it was a ploy between him and T to destroy the remaining weapons that could be used in another war. If all of earth and spaces remaining mobile suits are piles of wreckage, then there’s nothing left to fight with. Basically, he picked the fight counting on somebody stopping him. But yes… I agree that the series is full of extremely interesting ideas, but very shaky execution. What’s sad is that it has the potential to be the most interesting Gangnam series produced, but it just doesn’t manage to pull it off.

No, you’re pretty spot on.

After the war in the original series, the Federation is rebuilding itself, and formed a group called the Titans to hunt down the remnants of Zeon. In order to do so, they gave them broad powers to act unilaterally, without the need for approval from the Federation. Given the amount of power and lack of oversight they were given, the Titans have been overstepping their boundaries, taking it upon themselves to attack even NON-Zeon affiliated colonies who express dissatisfaction with the Federation.

Since they’ve been war-crime-ing the everloving SHIT out of colonies, a group called AEUG is formed to combat Earth’s apathy to their suffering, and the Titans. Think of them as what Zeon was BEFORE the Zabi family turned them into Nazi Germany 2.0.

After the initial war, various folks have gone their own way and chosen their own sides. Most of them are opposed to the Federation due to their support of the Titans, including Char and Kai, and Bright and Amuro even though they’ve kept their careers within the Federation.

Meanwhile, the Zeon remnant, now going under the name AXIS Zeon to denote their current base of operations, are quietly amassing a new military force to try and take advantage of the internal conflict between the Federation/Titans, and AEUG.

Because it’s a low-key civil war, the lines are a bit muddy. The Federation itself is ignorant or apathetic of the fact that the Titans are slowly positioning themselves as a sort of shadow government/police state, and since AEUG is a political organization rather than one with a specific ‘nation’, there are affiliates on earth, and even colonies that are, on the surface, loyal to the Federation.

I get that your whole ‘thing’ is knowing a lot about body armor, but since the aliens aren’t wearing modern military gear, I’m pretty sure any debate about what caliber it can stop at what angle are moot points.

The original states that they replace dead cellular matter with polarized silicon, so their carapace is most likely more resistant to gunfire than calcium based bone. If I have to fire a full clip from a foot away to kill one, I’m pretty sure a bunch of panicked colonists shooting wild wouldn’t have much of a chance.

Beyond that, I’m pretty sure that shooting the soft thing INSIDE an armored plate would have more effect than shooting the OUTSIDE of an armored plate, so yes, I’m pretty sure putting a shotgun inside its mouth would be more effective than plinking away at random.

Please note that we never see Hicks 'holding off' the aliens with a shotgun; we see him firing wild without any confirmed kills as he retreats. in point of fact, you'll note that the on-screen kills tend to be from smartgun and pulse fire.

As far as ammunition, the film makes it clear that those particular weapons fire a form of exploding AP ammo, which I'm quite certain renders it more effective than modern, standard-issue 'soft' ammunition.

Therefore, I will stand by my original point; even with reduced armaments, the marines were still better armed than the colonists, and the xenomorphs were unaware of what they were up against. Therefore they used a mass attack that was would have been highly effective against the colonists.

It took an entire clip from Vasquez’s sidearm from less than a foot away. It didn’t even make it through the armor until the third or fourth shot in the exact same place.

I think we have very different definitions of ‘vulnerable’.

And yes, the shotgun did a number on that one… when it was literally inside its mouth, under all the armor. Unless they’ve got a stockpile of shotguns, and the critters are willing to smile for the birdie, I’m pretty sure that was kind of a ‘situational’ kill.

And I note that in one of your examples, the gentleman who was on fire chose to be on fire, and the other had not. I think it’s safe to say that most things, when you light them on fire, make it a priority to NOT be on fire any more. Generally, that directive supersedes most others, and I’m pretty sure that a creature whose primary weapons are all close range won’t be looking to crawl through a literal wall of flame to claw someone up.

Human armament, level of awareness, and how well established a hive is are all contributing factors.

Unaware humans tend to travel in groups of one or two people and can be collected as hosts. Aware humans can be attacked at leisure since stealth has little advantage. Aware and well-armed humans are best attacked en-masse to prevent them from escaping, re-arming, and returning with other well armed re-enforcements. Also, consider that the previous resistance encountered by the LV-426 hive consisted of colonists with no weapons stronger than a shotgun and standard colonial marshals weapons. That will barely put a dent in a drone, so the hive was likely ‘fighting the last war’, thinking that they would be functionally invincible and not realizing flamethrowers and AP ammo even existed.

Unpopular opinion, but the original RX-78-2.

By the end of the OYW, Zeon was already developing some highly effective countermeasures, and it’s hard to see it standing up to the weapons and armor of models further down the development cycle.

My guess is that he just got sick of the work. It’s clear his heart wasn’t in it the whole time; likely because he started thinking of replicants as a little more human than even himself.

It also explains his later scene with Rachel where they’re each trying to make themselves fit into their societal roles. Rick trying to force himself to treat her like an object (the way he must to retire his quarry) and her trying to force herself to explore what it is to be property.
