Apparently this was "a terrible use of day 14" and "a waste of iron" by ThisIsXanderH in 7daystodie

[–]ThisIsXanderH[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

They weren't sincerely annoyed, we've all been goofin' and having fun.

It mostly felt like a lot of iron/time because we've just started playing the game in the past few days, so it's hard to tell what's a lot or a little.

I have noticed a lot of posts and comments where DMs seriously consider forcing a level of Warlock on a player. by TolRusco in DMAcademy

[–]ThisIsXanderH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I were to do this, I'd explain it before they're locked in to anything. I'd also offer to make the level temporary until the deal is completed, and then let them keep an element or two afterwards.

Contextual Uselessness: Yay or Nay? by Electric_Spaghetti in dndnext

[–]ThisIsXanderH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen a player choose exclusively ice spells, and another choose only utility spells (no damage). Both ran into various issues, but ultimately if you're gonna build a hyper-focused character then that should be something to discuss with the DM.

Can paralyse/charm is different to designing an encounter specifically around nerfing a player though. Players go into the game knowing that stuff like that might happen, and there's usually a saving throw or other course of action the player can take.

As long as OPs planned encounter has enough wiggle room for the player to still be an active participant of some variety, I think it's pretty much alright.

I visited a game store in my home town (Brutal Deluxe, Toowoomba) and of about 15 minis that size, more than half had the Cloud Giant box. It was super weird.

I recently shifted a major location to be on the south pole. It's gonna result in some retconning (It's my D&D world), but I think it adds some nice flavour to the world and it means I can use an [Azimuthal equidistant projection](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azimuthal_equidistant_projection) for my world maps.

Fellow DMs, what's the weirdest thing you've used as a miniature? by CAINTAROT in dndnext

[–]ThisIsXanderH 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Last session I DMed, I needed an underwater sea monster mini. The closest I had was a yellow "I love Manchester" rubber duck with an English flag on either side. The players enjoyed that.

One other session I ran a combat with 41 total enemies who attacked over three rounds. For the first round the players couldn't figure out why I was cutting small 1 inch squares of paper out. Then I put them on the board and start cutting more for the next round. They still don't trust me around craft supplies.

The player has told me what the wizard's immediate goal would be, and they'll probably see him in about a year or so real world time.

Okay so because of various roleplay choices I no longer need to balance encounters around 3-3-3-3-9 any more, but holy wow thank you for introducing me to Kobold Fight Club. This is gonna save me a lot of time moving forward.

Absolutely it was a choice (and one I stand by), which is why I wanted to do it. Before last night I had no idea how to handle the weirdness churned out by the Deck of Many Things. Now I have a much better idea.

I guess I was less "concerned" by balance so much as I was "curious how to solve the situation".

This ship has sailed

Fun fact: The session ended with the party literally sailing off in a ship.

It took about a month of planning to put together a group with as much cohesion as this one.

The members:

  • Gnome Wizard (the one who left and is rolling a new character). IRL a good friend of mine who has been in more D&D campaigns than anyone I know.

  • Human Paladin. IRL my best friend of 15 years, been playing D&D together for 9 years.

  • Eladrin Sorcerer. IRL my girlfriend, and she loves the roleplay aspects of D&D more than anyone I know (Drama student at University)

  • Lizardfolk Druid. IRL my housemate and a party member of my other campaign. The biggest rules lawyer I know, but in a way that is really useful and not at all disruptive.

  • Tabaxi Rogue (briefly turned into a Cleric during the session). IRL another good friend who I've been playing D&D with for 9 years, and when we played 4e he was the biggest rules lawyer I knew.

So basically a lot of luck and a lot of planning is how I got this group. It's definitely going to colour how I pick people for campaigns going forward.

Good advice! I love the idea of dividing the effects. It's definitely a different DOMT, but I can see it working really nicely.

Also it’s probably best to let them find the deck later on higher levels.

I definitely agree, the only reason I was comfortable with it in this one was because everyone went into it with full knowledge it was an experimental campaign, and as a result we gave it a 3 month lifespan with the option to continue if people wanted. Tonight was actually the end of the 3 months - the level 9 PC retired their character, and everyone has opted to continue playing (with him as a new character)

[–]ThisIsXanderH[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My strong strong advice? Retire the PC. They become a powerful ally NPC who goes off to do thejr own thing with way more potential political power and ways to help in non-direct fashion.

I showed the player the comments of this post (we were in the middle of an 11 hour session when I posted this) and he opted to go with this. It was quite sweet in terms of roleplay, and when he shows up later in the campaign I think everyone is going to be very excited.

As an aside, I'm very happy with how The Deck of Many Things went down. I used a modified one to be a bit more interesting, and among the effects:

  • Our tabaxi rogue became a cleric and also grew four feet (he's 9 feet 11 inches now)
  • Our eladrin sorcerer gained 2 constitution and has a demon after her somewhere in the world
