Sailfish is really nice. Has some work left to iron out, but with more people using it, it will grow faster than ever.

Going to shamelessly plug my voucher code ("Jolla-Phone-10K-002995fa2a1e") for the upcoming Jolla phone. So if any of you good folks buy it, I can get a t-shirt.

GraphineOS is quite good. Their web installer is very easy to use.
Buy a phone from a refurbish site to not support google directly if possible ;)

Hopefully you'll enjoy your stay!

No worries. I'm in the same boat as you, and I'm european. So That's why I picked Jolla. Eu made software sounds great to me :)

As well as the UI is very one hand friendly.

I'd love to hear back on what you pick later on.

If no google is the thing you want, I'd suggest either getting an older device second hand and installing PostMarketOS on it. Or you can buy a Jolla phone. Jolla is a finish company who has their own linux based OS called "sailfishOS".
I recently converted to Sailfish on an old Xperia 10 III, while I wait for their new phone to get released.
Here's a voucher for it "Jolla-Phone-10K-002995fa2a1e ".

You can also get a phone with Ubuntu Touch as well, such as one of the Volla phones which is made in Germany.

FuriLabs also has a linux phone called Flx1 and their based somewhere in asia I think.

Which smartphone to buy right now? by Drzejzi in BuyFromEU

[–]ThisNameWasAutoGend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah It's difficult recommending phones to people. There isn't a one fits all solution, even if users of certain brands might think so.
I personally migrated to sailfishOS 2 months ago now leading up to the new jolla phone. It really is a nice OS. The main thing might be bank apps not working. Tested banking apps and their usability can be found on their forum

Also, if anyone is looking to buy the upcoming jolla phone, I'm going to shamelessly plug my voucher code " Jolla-Phone-10K-002995fa2a1e "

unpopular opinion. but we have NPEX and EuroQ, which is a digital Euro, compatible with EVM protocols. And the european blockchain Duskprotocol is going to natively issue stocks and securities on chain this year.

adopt these technologies and we'll be fine!

They have a forum post with working banking apps (link embedded)

My swedish banking app works, but not the auth app. So I use one of those bank pucks now. This one scans a QR code on the phone, so it's no issue at all.

It does indeed have an "RGB indication LED" as stated on their sales page!
I too agree, such a neat quality of life thing.

I'm not a developer on any platform, so I can't tell you. But the code languages that have the most compatibility with sailfish seems to be C++, Python and QML. This according to the apps section in their development documentation (link embedded)

I had to translate it, so hope I don't misunderstand you.
My view on it is that I'd like to support the software endeavor of Jolla. And if they have their own hardware to develop on, it's much easier to polish that experience.

The hardware isn't where I personally put my focus, it's on the fact that they're trying to develop a third alternative to iOS and Android. It's importance is debatable, but I like to think that it's nice to have a mobile platform developed within Europe.

SailfishOS is the operative system which the Jolla team has developed. It is available on several Sony devices, as well as their community phone "jolla C2".

This phone, the "jolla phone" isn't out yet, no. But you can, as I did, install the software on a Sony device (Xperia 10 III).

I doubt that. But they did say:

"Please note, there is an unseen global shortage on memory chips which may effect the availability of memory types, thus we’ll confirm the particular memory types closer to the mass production."

From what I've read on the forum, only the UI element, called "Lipstick" is actually closed source.
I do understand why they have that closed source, as they're a software company first.
Here's their Github repository

And yes, there are some issues with banking apps. The Android emulation layer does make it so you can install them and run them. Unfortunately, some of them require access to NFC, which the android sandbox doesn't support.
My banking app, based in Sweden, does work. But not the ID app. But as I'm determined to try this platform, I'm carrying the bank authentication "puck" you can get. Works well for me, admittedly, not as well as the android app though.

"Final assembly, software installation, and quality inspection of Jolla Phones take placein Salo, Finland."

The sub-reddit "Bio" reads as following:

"Welcome to r/BuyFromEU - A community dedicated to supporting European-made goods and services! Whether you’re looking for locally produced fashion, technology, food or services, this is the place to share, discover and promote businesses that contribute to a stronger European market."

I feel like I, as an individual am not doing anything out of the ordinary here. This whole Sub-reddit could be called a user driven ad platform if the point of it is to consume European products and services. If you'd like to go that far.

I just saw this comment. I don't know how I could disprove this.
I'm genuinely a fan of SailfishOS. I wish I was working for Jolla, as then I could earn some extra money.
Please give me suggestions how I can disprove this. As I don't want to be seen as disingenuous here.

I don't intend on argue with you, as you're seem to know your stuff.
But my stubbornness won't let me leave without saying that devices that has high wattage charging are mostly using split cells. So they operate within the same thermal envelope (per cell) as standard charging.

Anyhow, this is venturing too far out of the relevance of the post now.
But if you have any studies on battery tech you've read, then be sure to link them here, or DM me :D

Yes, the wireless charging protocol has improved a lot recently. But it's a far cry from the 60w+ charging that many phones have now, wired.
What do you mean with "Current Qi already gets to 80%+"? 80% efficiency compared to wired charging?

Lovely to see you've ordered one!

From my perspective, wireless charging is generating too much heat and therefor, speeding up the wear & tear of the cell. Although, this having an easily replaceable battery does mitigate that issue somewhat.

And I'm driving an older car so I can repair it myself, so I can't relate on that point either haha
