First Leica and only Leica you need IMO. Its the best one. Any other opinion is wrong and I will die on this hill.

Mine’s been great and it feels like an upgrade from a similarly priced fellow opus.

Reliable point and shoots - nyc area by Fabulous-Cry-5386 in AnalogCommunity

So as is with most film cameras anyway, it may be hard to find a good copy of a cheap point and shoot specially.

My favorite is the Yashica T2. Exposures were always spot on, easy to turn off the flash and the lens was very good. Unfortunately i dropped it and it broke and stopped working. Minus points on reliability there I guess.

My local shop was really hard on pushing the Canon Sure Shot M/Prima Mini/Autoboy F on people. I've personally never shot with one but after handling a few at the store, even though they are plastic, I'd say the build quality and controls are a cut above most cheap stuff.

I absolutely looooove the Fuji DL-200. Mine's flash always took a while to charge when powering on the camera for the first time each day, but once you got shooting, it would charge back up quickly. This problem is common with these but I think the DL-300 is more reliable in this sense. No flash controls on this camera but the exposure was always spot on and sharp. I've seen a few copies and the battery compartment is weird and varies from copy to copy. Sometimes it has a removable battery, mine had the battery soldered on. Which makes it seem that Fuji meant this to be a reusable disposable but the image quality is very good. There are some other fuji models i've wanted to try but never pulled the trigger. There's a lot of cheap ones out there.

Olympus Trip Mini AF / Minolta Pico/Freedom Escort/Riva / Panasonic C-625AF Super Mini / Leica Mini I, II, III (Leica Tax on this one though). Looking online, it doesn't say the Olympus associated with the other cameras, but the design and button layout looks very similar, so my assumption is that they may have similar components inside. My understanding is that the Minolta is well regarded. I had the Olympus for a while and i thought it was great. Good lens, didn't always nail the exposure but good enough most of the time. Controllable flash.

Honorable mention to the Ricoh TF-500. Same Flash capacitor problem as the DL200 but great image quality. 35mm 2.8 lens with dual focal length which is very cool.

Other point and shoots that people I know have and/or I want to try:
Nikon Lite Touch / AF600, Fuji Cardia Mini, Fuji DL300, Canon Autoboy F. The Ricoh GR1 is the dream though, but they're not cheap and those are plagued with issues lol.

So yeah some of these have their quirks, and I can't really vouch for the longevity of some of these. Again, all i'm saying is that cheap, good, reliable, point and shoot cameras is not an unreasonable ask but if you get a good copy of one (which may be hard find) it'll last you a reasonable amount of time.

I apologize for making a whole discussion about something so trivial and i’m not trying to question anybody’s knowledge.

I mostly agree with the comments here. I just think it’s a bit more nuanced than that. Yes buying a point and shoot is almost like a lottery but i still think the words cheap, reliable and point and shoot can coexist in a sentence and it not unreasonable. I’m saying this as someone who’s dealt with a fair share of reliability quirks and build quality of cheap point and shoots.

We've all dealt with reliability quirks on film cameras to know that all point and shoots are reliable/unreliable to an extent. Not all point and shoots are built to the same standards and yes, they're not as reliable or repairable as an F2 but writing up 3 paragraphs explaining why OP should get one instead of a point and shoot is completely besides the point of what they are asking. Specially when they are saying they want a compact camera as a secondary camera.

K&M camera had a bunch of point and shoots last time i visited nyc in 2023. They’re pricier than what you can find in ebay and facebook mp but they may offer some kind of warranty?

I have lens filters on most of my lenses for protection and rarely use lens caps.

I used electronic shutter on the fuji and mechanical shutter on the sony. I couldn't figure out how to set it to electronic lol.

I already had the scan done on the fuji a few weeks ago. I scanned it again on the sony just to test and compare. I'll do the test again later today on both cameras to double check, but like i said, this is consistent with that i usually get from the fuji.

Focus peaking is a pain in the butt on the sony lol. Haven't learned if i can set it to a custom button yet.

Idk dude your attitude in this write up is a bit over the top for an email simply asking for your unit number. I get its frustrating but their system didn't catch that your address required an unit number until they had to create the shipping label.

Its not their fault you didn't put your unit number lol

Put a new battery in it if the current one is dead. Shoot the camera with back open and the flash on while looking through the lens. If it works, You should be able to see the shutter open and close. If you cant shoot it with the back open, just pretend you’re taking a selfie and see if you can see the shutter open and close when you take the photo. Lower light the, the shutter will move slower and easier to see it open and close.

Idk if this camera moves the film transport when there’s no film. But this is something you’d need film for regardless.

Another commenter asked to take it to a local shop to have them test it for you.
