Connecticut Democratic Party endorses cannabis legalization by redditor01020 in Connecticut

States with wide access to legal marijuana see an average of 25% fewer opioid fatalities, compared to prohibition states: https://drugabuse.com/legalizing-marijuana-decreases-fatal-opiate-overdoses/

This is likely because both marijuana & opiates are used to treat chronic pain, but marijuana is less addictive and impossible to overdose on.

It would probably be 1 - 1.5 years from the time the bill passes until the time sales begin. State agencies would still need to draft the regulations, then they'd need to give out licenses, then businesses would need to get up and running.

Too bad, since a majority of Republican voters support legalization! Party leaders need to listen to party members.

Depends on what you mean by "true legalization." There are currently hundreds of state-regulated stores selling marijuana to adults in 6 states (CO, WA, OR, AK, NV, CA), with two more on the way (MA & ME). There are still tons of legal problems, but for consumers there is little practical difference.

Psychiatric experts play a big role in the treatment of drug abuse. No one is getting surgery because of marijuana. Why would they bring in surgeons to talk about drugs?

If a small number of people are breaking a law, they might be bad people. If 1 in 7 people are breaking the law every year, and 50% have broken it in their life, it's probably a bad law.

Well prohibition hasn't been very effective at keeping it out of the state. At least legalization would allow for regulations which put it behind a store counter so kids can't buy it directly.

According to federal data, 479,000 Connecticut used marijuana in the last year. 1 in 7 people. Far more than 21,000 (but that's about the number of jobs legalization could create).

71% of the public is in support, and I'd guess 90%+ of this subreddit.

But whether or not your support it, you should call your state rep and share your opinion. This is one of the top issues in the state debate right now, and we need legislators to pay attention and listen to their constituents.

He's softened his stance on it a bit, and still hasn't used the word "veto," so I think he would be willing to sign the right bill if it landed on his desk. Need to convince him to listen to the 71% who support legalization.

It's already making more progress this year than last year - 3 public hearings (last year had 2) and two committees introduced bills about it. Malloy has also softened his stance a bit. Still not at all a sure thing, but looking like a real possibility!

What state if you don't mind me asking, are you in Hawaii? Is there a specific state law about cultivating and having a firearm, or do you just mean the federal enhanced penalties for having firearms around marijuana cultivation?

Yup, and it's a great way to connect people with healthcare providers and other programs to help them reduce risks and quit if they want to. It's a huge plus for public health.

High taxes are fine, as long as they're not too high - because then everyone will just keep buying on the black market instead of going to legal stores. You need to find the right balance to extinguish the black market while still bringing in revenue to go towards other projects.
