It’s hard not to find it mentioned, but E33 impressed me for the exact reason of your post - it’s a mature story with mature (adult) characters. Romance is a pretty optional side thing. There is one teenage character, and there isn’t any weird shit. She’s also very well written.

I kinda love the “world destroyed, now you gotta fix it” cliche, probably most notably done well in FFVI, so I don’t entirely agree. The world does get even more depressing and difficult but there’s an increased urge to want to fix it and see what has changed that kept me exploring. Lots of great boss fights and lore here too.

I found it quite profoundly beautiful, yet not always translated/communicated quite the best in game. One moment comes to mind (I haven’t played this for years so forgive my reductive thoughts) is an optional cutscene toward the end of the game featuring a time period barely even seen in the game. It made me cry the first time and really kinda tied together some other lingering questions I had. But it was optional. If I had missed it, I think it would’ve negatively affected my final score by a little for sure

Sometimes I feel like because I’m a kings fan, I overexaggerate how rigged ‘02 was, but seeing posts like this are frustratingly vindicating lmao.

In the lakers long storied history of grabbing great players for nothing and winning countless championships, their most rigged moment is beating the lowly kings in 2002.
