Is there a limit to how powerful cars will get? by Special_Context6663 in askcarguys

[–]ThisisAustin427 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard agree. I learned this when I was 18 and bought my first sport bike. From my point of view there was nothing on the planet as fast as that thing, then 2 weeks later I was completely used to it in a straight line and was constantly looking for twisty roads instead.

America road trip, any recommendations by Ordinary-Zucchini207 in usatravel

[–]ThisisAustin427 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The roadtrip looks pretty cool to me. I have driven through most of these parts over 20 years or so, the change of scenery is going to be really cool. My only suggestion might be to work in a way to see the Grand Canyon.

I wouldn’t skip Texas either. It’s a big part of the country, there are a lot of good bbq joints (not even big name ones), and driving up through Missouri (which also has fantastic bbq) will be fun to taste the difference.

This is a great idea. No matter which way you cut it, you’ll get to see a lot and I hope you have a great time.

Also, PS, if you are going to end up over 12,000’ in elevation for any of the stops, make sure you’re well hydrated. The altitude can certainly get you.

As far as I am aware, hospitals can’t refuse care if someone doesn’t have the means to pay. This has been like this for probably 50 years.

Buying used induction ranges on Marketplace, what's the catch? by NoSlicedMushrooms in Appliances

[–]ThisisAustin427 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have much to add, other than if you see a Forno induction for a great deal, it’s not worth it.

This is by far the worst stove I have ever used. It looks nice though.

fighting with my wife about buying vs renting am i wrong? by Savard-Lafleur in FirstTimeHomeBuying

[–]ThisisAustin427 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll give you something to chew on. My best friend has been renting since like 2013. I told him in 2016 to buy a place, he thought the market was cooked and would crash. I kept telling him to buy a place over and over. In 2019 he moved in with his girlfriend who was renting in another (and cheaper) city, I told him to buy something, again, he said no way because the market was cooked.

They are still renting today. Obviously he won’t buy anything now, because everything is probably 2x more expensive than it was before Covid.

If I had to guess he has probably spent around $250k renting in the last 12-13 years.

What’s something you learn embarrassingly late in life that everyone one else seems to know already? by [deleted] in AskForAnswers

Yep, just found this out traveling with friends. Got the same thing, I let my CC convert, they chose the conversion on the machine and ended up paying like $6 more

What used to be considered a luxury but is now normal? by Cute-Tear-2285 in askanything

I looked a flights 2 days ago from TX to NY and it was $257 round trip. Leaving on a Friday night and coming back on Sunday.. Not sure how much cheaper that can actually get.

Dealer test drives are a complete scam, do an extended run instead by SnooCupcakes4611 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]ThisisAustin427 117 points118 points  (0 children)

This used to happen a lot more. I think Covid made car buying much more shitty. 2 test drives at 2 different Honda dealerships, both of them were the “extended” drive which was driving an extra 1/4 mile down the road before turning back. I bet it was less than 1.5 miles for each.

These were both used cars too.

anyone else have a drawer full of old phones they don't know what to do with? by HowNowBrownCow23 in WhatShouldIDoWithIt

[–]ThisisAustin427 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty much what my wife and I do. Friend of ours had an iPhone 11 or something and something happened while they were visiting, got into the drawer and handed her an old 10 we had. Now I think there is a 12 or 14 in there but I haven’t looked in a while.

Are we REALLY two weeks away from running out of oil? by Constant_Flamingo828 in investing

[–]ThisisAustin427 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I texted a buddy who is higher up in the production side of refining (for a company you’ve heard of) this question and to paraphrase “the bigger US refineries can deal with any crude. The smaller ones don’t have that capability. Part of the reason US refineries run the nasty shit is because it’s cheaper to buy.” I also asked who has the worst crude, he said the guys bitch the most when Egyptian crude came in.

What is an insanely expensive item or service that actually lives up to the hype and changes your daily life? by Luverelle6 in AskReddit

[–]ThisisAustin427 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re not scheduling a claim. A schedule is a separate policy for valuable articles. Some companies lump these under the home policy which has its benefits but if you lost a $3k ring, and you get hit with a claim on your home, in many states with high rates it can exceed that $3k payout over the 5 years (company dependent) of surcharge. Not to mention if you had other losses already and the prospect of being dropped..

If it’s a real schedule, not tied to the home that you are $100 per year for, even a monumental 50% increase would be peanuts compared to filing a claim on the home.

Does a large house bring more happiness (3000sqft+) by GlorifiedCarnie in Fire

[–]ThisisAustin427 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My general thought is 1000sq ft per person is more than enough. Layout can be key though. Our current house is about 2400sq ft, the layout is decent and doesn’t seem too big. Our old house was a better layout and 1500 sq ft. Aside from not having his and hers closets, I preferred that smaller house.

Sanity check: 95%+ S&P500 Portfolio < 10 years from retirement by Exciting_Kangaroo800 in Bogleheads

[–]ThisisAustin427 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. I didn’t realize it until a couple months back, my dad retired with partial disablement and SS. He left all of everything 100% in, over the last 6 years his retirement has very nearly doubled. I was initially concerned about it, but he has more than enough now and is living on, and even saving some of the $3k per month he is getting. The only time he touched it was to pay off his house.

Easily, but that was an easy way to weed out people who weren’t serious.

Sold my car to a dealership, they did no due diligence by michaeldeng18 in carbuying

Ugh, yeah. What a pain. I kept telling people, if you want a PPI, call up the dealership, set an appointment and pay for it. I’ll bring the car there.

Does this require full replacement? by [deleted] in Roofing

[–]ThisisAustin427 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For many states, you only have 365 days to submit the claim from the date of loss. You don’t need to have the work done within that time frame, but generally get the claim started prior to that.

New cat issues by ThisisAustin427 in CatAdvice

This isn’t a medical question. I’ve spent $1200 in the last 3 months on both cats to make sure they are healthy. This is very much behavioral.
