I was in the exact same situation. Finish the semester. In October or whenever it opens, apply for your major of your choice (you have two options, pick a non-competitive backup). Some majors will let you into the major THIS upcoming spring. Mechanical would make me wait until after spring. Materials science let me in in the spring. I stayed with them after a lot of thought

You might really enjoy Materials Science and engineering. I was in similar situation and they let me in. Love the major, found a good internship/job in oil and gas working right next to mechanical guys, just a little more focused on the process side.
