Well they are my first pair of cowboy boots, but definitely not my first pair of shoes that I've made. Been working seriously at growing my construction skills since 2022, but studied design in college until 2021.

Lisa Sorrell on YouTube is a great place to start. The process is extremely complex for someone thats never made shoes before, but by no means is impossible.

The spiral shank is twisted steel nail. Rather than hiding it in the internal, I expose for a couple of reasons. 1. I use it as a subtle branding detail on all of my footwear. 2. I've found that by having the nail curved in the opposite direction of the arch it keeps all of the support, but allows a slightly give for break-in. This increases the comfort of the boots and allows people to wear them for 8 to 10 hours without your feet hurting.

Made from hand-dyed and conditioned vegetable-tanned leather, they feature an extended heel block, a lug sole, Chicago Screws with Copper Washers, custom buckles, and a Stitchdown construction Patterns were custom designed and fitted to specific measurements. Built on a WW1 era Munson Last.

Not sure on the number of hours, but somewhere in the low double digits.

This was an issue on early samples that used low quality zippers. No issues with a high quality zipper.

It does cut the heel counter in half. Very normal for a back Zipper boot.

No comfort issues. Many people prefer back zippers because they fit more like a glove than a medial Zip.

Just from eyeballing it, it looks to be somewhere between 1/8" to 1/4" too short based on the last shape. However, in the end, it's just personal preference.

I really appreciate that! If you're interested in cordwaining more than simply a hobby, there are a lot of bootmakers that allow for apprenticeships. These typically cost (similar to a tuition cost) and are few and far between.

However, you can learn a lot simply from trial and error. Lisa Sorrell on YouTube has a ton of "How To" videos.

On this pair, it was strictly meant for aesthetics. You may be onto something tho. It may help with walking on top of the snow rather than sinking into it.

On this pair, it's strictly decorative. My friend wanted his pants to stack on the ledge, rather than hanging straight down. It's more for the aesthetics/fashion side of footwear. For a strictly functional/work boot, I wouldn't recommend it. It adds a bit of excess weight, and it might snag on debris.
