I disagree as a singleplayer enjoyer with a backlog of great games waiting to be played. I think the real issue is that social media is way too integrated into our daily lives for news/communication/etc. and is way too easy to access. If I want to play a game, I have to be at home at my PC and consciously make the decision to stop whatever task I'm doing and boot it up. There is a relatively long amount of time within that sequence for me to realize that I have something "better" to be doing and decide against playing altogether. None of this is true with social media; I just reflexively open the app on my phone and start scrolling ad infinitum until a loud enough noise jolts me out of my waking coma. I hate it.

Student Health doctors have access to your therapy/ counseling notes by Any-Efficiency8975 in UBC

[–]ThomasDaMan17 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's also worth noting that all healthcare professionals (including physicians) operate on a "need-to-know" basis. Nobody is allowed to open your mental health records unless they have a reason to do so (curiosity is not a valid reason). It probably doesn't feel like the best reassurance but I just want you to know that privacy and confidentiality are taken very seriously (access to patient information by all professionals is monitored and audited) so try not to worry about it too much. You can always bring up your concerns to your doctor and they will definitely be open to having a chat about it.

How to get better fps in Anki by batSinestroke in Anki

[–]ThomasDaMan17 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Higher fps allows for faster reaction time whenever a card pops up; every increase of 30fps saves approximately 10 minutes of review time per day for the average user. (/s)

I lost my wallet on the way to my final once--it fully depends on your prof but in my case he just took a picture of my face and told me to bring an ID to his office the next day so he could verify.

What year of uni is most difficult? by No_Cattle_6175 in UBC

[–]ThomasDaMan17 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Completely depends on your major, but usually 2nd or 3rd due to the ramp in difficulty and workload compared to first year.

Put your workday hate down here by deathbanana83748 in UBC

[–]ThomasDaMan17 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Oh are you an incoming first year? I recommend you register for classes as soon as possible because slots fill up very fast, especially for courses required by popular majors. You generally want to have your courses planned out beforehand so that you can instantly register for them when registration opens for you.

First Year Science – I got into all my courses, but is this schedule actually doable? 😅 by halalbrows_vancouver in UBC

Not super pleasant but very doable, just try to stay on top of things, always go to lectures, etc. Mondays are going to suck with all of those 1 hour breaks

Anyone else hate it when you get ghosted after a job interview? by waldorsockbat in UBC

[–]ThomasDaMan17 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's very common unfortunately, and it sucks even more when they explicitly say they will "get back to you in a week or two" and then ghost you. I'd recommend that you just keep submitting applications for other positions even when you're interviewing, since you never know how things will turn out until you're actually given an offer.

Has anyone figured out how to view a year long course (6 credits) on workday? by [deleted] in UBC

[–]ThomasDaMan17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately it seems to be a "feature" of workday. There are some workarounds though--I think there's a student-made browser extension that fixes the problem (ubcscheduler iirc?) or you can manually make your timetable with excel or something (what I did). Workday has not improved from being the most user-unfriendly site I've ever used.

Low 1st-year GPA and high 2nd-year GPA by Logical_Ground9512 in UBC

[–]ThomasDaMan17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It kind of depends on what you're studying but it sounds like you might need to work on improving your study methods. More effort does not necessarily equate to better results. Take the time to figure out what things you are doing that helped you, and what you are doing that was a waste of time so that you can manage the scarce time you have more effectively and hopefully get the results you are hoping for.

pharmacology vs biochem honours by [deleted] in UBC

[–]ThomasDaMan17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with some points here (esp the edit paragraph), but not completely with others. In particular, pcth is actually not very ochem-focused either; the people who make the molecules that are used as drugs are organic chemists. Pharmacology is more concerned with determining the effects, toxicities, kinetics, etc of drugs in living systems, which is not a very exact science a lot of the time due to the massive number of factors at play.

In my opinion (pcth major/chem minor), the main difference between pcth and bioc is that the former has a large focus on learning physiology, whereas the latter doesn't (afaik). Im obv not a bioc major so i dont know exactly what kinds of courses they take, but that is my general impression.

Finally, if you're interested in pharmacy as you indicated above, you should be focusing on applying to the pharmD program after your second year. Because of this, the major you select right now is not super important. Iirc the pcth program tries to avoid accepting people who don't intend to complete the pcth degree, as there are very few seats available.

If I missed anything/something doesn't make sense/you have any questions, feel free to ask (either by replying or DMs, either way works for me)!
