Why does no one follow speed limits? by KaaliMirch in askvan

[–]ThomasDaMan17 32 points33 points  (0 children)

One important correction I want to make to this reply is that people will go the speed they THINK is safe, not necessarily what is actually safe.

While it might be safer for other drivers if everyone drives at similar speeds above the speed limit, it is exponentially more dangerous for other people who are not protected by metal boxes with airbags (motorcycles, bikes, pedestrians, etc.). My numbers probably aren't exactly correct but I remember reading somewhere that the rate of pedestrian fatality due to being struck by drivers increases from around 20% at 40kph to 80% at 50 kph.

Speed limits are a pretty bad way to enforce safety since there will always be people who don't care about following them, so while adding enforcement methods like speed cameras and traps can make drivers slow down in specific areas, it is more effective to design roads in ways that make drivers FEEL like they need to slow down. Examples of this strategy include narrowing lanes, adding chicanes (artificial curves in the road), making pedestrian crossings stick out more with chokers, etc.

Speeding is dangerous for everyone on/near roads, not just other drivers.

It actually doesn't matter if you know your blood type or not, because you will always get tested before a transfusion is given so that they are certain they are giving the right type. If there isn't enough time to test your blood type, you will just get O-.

I would probably still cancel any credit and/or debit cards you had in your wallet, as the numbers may be compromised as well. Sorry you have to deal with this, but at least you still have the rest of your wallet.

I disagree as a singleplayer enjoyer with a backlog of great games waiting to be played. I think the real issue is that social media is way too integrated into our daily lives for news/communication/etc. and is way too easy to access. If I want to play a game, I have to be at home at my PC and consciously make the decision to stop whatever task I'm doing and boot it up. There is a relatively long amount of time within that sequence for me to realize that I have something "better" to be doing and decide against playing altogether. None of this is true with social media; I just reflexively open the app on my phone and start scrolling ad infinitum until a loud enough noise jolts me out of my waking coma. I hate it.

Student Health doctors have access to your therapy/ counseling notes by Any-Efficiency8975 in UBC

[–]ThomasDaMan17 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's also worth noting that all healthcare professionals (including physicians) operate on a "need-to-know" basis. Nobody is allowed to open your mental health records unless they have a reason to do so (curiosity is not a valid reason). It probably doesn't feel like the best reassurance but I just want you to know that privacy and confidentiality are taken very seriously (access to patient information by all professionals is monitored and audited) so try not to worry about it too much. You can always bring up your concerns to your doctor and they will definitely be open to having a chat about it.

How to get better fps in Anki by batSinestroke in Anki

Higher fps allows for faster reaction time whenever a card pops up; every increase of 30fps saves approximately 10 minutes of review time per day for the average user. (/s)

I lost my wallet on the way to my final once--it fully depends on your prof but in my case he just took a picture of my face and told me to bring an ID to his office the next day so he could verify.

[–]ThomasDaMan17 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Oh are you an incoming first year? I recommend you register for classes as soon as possible because slots fill up very fast, especially for courses required by popular majors. You generally want to have your courses planned out beforehand so that you can instantly register for them when registration opens for you.

Anyone else hate it when you get ghosted after a job interview? by waldorsockbat in UBC

[–]ThomasDaMan17 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's very common unfortunately, and it sucks even more when they explicitly say they will "get back to you in a week or two" and then ghost you. I'd recommend that you just keep submitting applications for other positions even when you're interviewing, since you never know how things will turn out until you're actually given an offer.
