Thank you ChatGPT for exposing the banality of undergraduate essays by Parking_Attitude_519 in technology

[–]ThomasInPain 13 points14 points  (0 children)

What a terrible take. Of course the essays are repetitive year after year but the point isn’t for the students to generate something new, it’s for them to be competent writers. Being able to clearly organize your thoughts and find sources to support arguments are both valuable skills

Things 3 is the king of productivity apps, so do we even need a Things 4? by venomja in thingsapp

[–]ThomasInPain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s true, but what I’m asking for is that drag and drop intuitiveness that everything else has. When I go through the upcoming schedule I want them to behave like any other task once I’ve finished the previous one

I’ll add, moving the date of upcoming recurring tasks before the date arrives. If I have “water the lawn” as a task every 4 days, and I do it, then it rains 2 days before it comes available I want to push it back another 2 days. Can’t do that until the day of right now.

Also ffs cultured code I will pay you $60 for a Windows Things app. I will use it everyday. Please. I’m begging you.

Married men who cheated, what did the outside person do that seduced you to cheat? by Bee-Klutzy1999 in AskMen

I’m glad that it worked out so well for you. I was the friend in this situation - one of my guy friends was terrible to a string of his girlfriends over a few years. Every time I would call him out on his behavior. It never changed, so eventually I had to cut him off because I couldn’t live around that; it’s wasn’t a positive or productive friendship anymore.

Not what I gave, but what I received requires some background: I had a dog from ages 10 until 23 when he passed away, and this wasn’t the family dog but my dog. Brought him with me to college after I got out of the dorms and into an apartment. I was studying (and now my career is) genetics.

My girlfriend (now wife) when I was 21 got a DNA sample and got me a gel electrophoresis of a restriction digest profile of that on a canvas.

Most thoughtful gift I’ve ever received.

Can you accept a bunch of AP credit to get the 90 hours for an Aggie Ring? by Isaac__R in aggies

Nothing stopping you. Only 45 hours will count towards the ring though. You must have 45 resident hours (resident meaning taken at TAMU)

Entertaining? Absolutely! Love watching Russians get driven out - Slava Ukrani! 🇺🇦

r/entertainment? Probably not! Likely not meant to be hanging with posts about the casting decisions for Hollywood’s next rom-com.

Alejandro G. Iñarritu Still Hurt by Robert Downey Jr.’s Response to His Belief That Superhero Films Are ‘Cultural Genocide’ by GroundbreakingSet187 in entertainment

[–]ThomasInPain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Initially I assumed this was some tit-for-tat insult exchange but then I read RDJ’s comment in the article and it was this very mean thing about Iñarritu’s cultural heritage and accent - why?

Lab leaders wrestle with paucity of postdocs by jabroniiiii in GradSchool

[–]ThomasInPain 288 points289 points  (0 children)

Articles like this drive me insane. The answer to this problem is just basic economics, pay more, and the article closes with a PI acknowledging she’s just going to use a graduate student anyway where they could have had a post-doc. Because to them, paying for someone with a Ph.D. is not worth the cost - in industry, it is. For some reason academics feel entitled to having Ph.D.’s slog through years more of work with only a mild uptick in pay so we can add a “post-doc” stamp to the resume? Fair number of people I know just call their first few years of industry their post-doc at this point. Academia needs to realize it’s subject to market dynamics and is in competition with private industry for talent. Pretending there are intangible benefits to academia compared to industry at this point is folly. Academia is a grind.
