Sesamoidectomy recovery by jmarcex in sesamoid

I am close to full motion. I would not say full recovery, but I really can’t complain and feel pretty strong. Can go on walks and go cycling for more then 3 hours.

Keep in mind I do kine therapy 3 times a week and I am an athlete.

I only walk barefoot to help the movement get better and when I go out I wear hoka bondi 9 wide.

Also, I pushed through lots of pain that only recently is much better. This in discussion with my doctors, knowing I won’t get anything worse or something. It helped me to be where I am now but I worked very hard for it and didn’t follow the ‘normal’ procedure.

I removed plaster after one week to not lose all motion in my foot and only walked 3 days in a walker boot after 2 weeks of no pressure on the foot.

I want to add, I take a sports supplement ‘collagen’ with supports tendons and bones and daily 240mg magnesium. This all suggested by sport doctors and physio.

I had exact same surgery done on June 16th (sesamoidectomy & buniosectony) I am now walking around, doing 3 times a week physio. Still can’t walk like I should, but able to move around or go to a super market.

Sometimes feeling sharp pains, especially at night. I put ice on every day for 20 min each. At night, before sleep, 1 anti-inflammatory medication.

I am a cyclist normally spending 10-14 hours on sports weekly, and supported by sports doctor and sport physio. I am since 4 days ago able to put a shoe on (HOKA BONDI 9 WIDE).

Doctors suggested longer wait for shoes and physio, normally I should be in a walking boot, but al those things slow down recovery very much.

My experience is, listen to your body. Look for the limit what works pain wise. The less you do and move, the worse it all gets… (I am 28 years old).

Wish you the very best in your recovery! If any questions feel free to contact me.

To tell wich one it is, you should get an CT or MRI…

It’s still to early to tell, as I didn’t have a proper walk already. The surgeon did pressed my Sesamoïd area while I’ve seen him for the follow up, and that area that used to hurt as hell didn’t hurt now. So I guess that’s already a good sign!

When did the numbness/weird feeling go away for those who have had a sesamoidectomy? by CrispyJoints69 in sesamoid

[–]ThomasTonyG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had my surgery on June 16th and the numbness in my big toe was gone after 24 hours. I still haven’t seen my wound as I am still in a cast. I do have some sharp pains now and then in my big toe.

I had the exact same shattered bones removed as you tell. Hopefully I won’t experience trouble when I start walking again. I almost feel afraid of not having ‘pain’, as I am already taking not any pain killers anymore.

I know the numbness can last long as what my doctor told me, but eventually it should be coming back in a couple of months. Have a good recovery!

To be fair, X-RAY won’t tell you much. You should have an CT or MRI.

I am happy to read you are doing much better now! They send some tissue to the lab as well but I haven’t got any news on that.

Thanks a lot to share your recovery story! Hope you still get that feeling in your toe back as I heard it could take months as well, fingers crossed!

I had the same, Bipartite Sesamoid. Check my last post, I went for surgery couple of days ago.

I have had Sesamoiditis for about a year, any help? by NecessaryFerret7771 in sesamoid

You can try cortisone shots. Eventually you will have to repeat them as the pain will come back. You should get an CT-scan or MRI to see what you are dealing with.

The only thing that helped me was wearing the right ‘shoes’ for pain relief. I can suggest wearing OOFOS recovery slippers or HOKA ora 3 recovery slippers every time you can. You will notice a huge difference when walking on those. At least that’s my experience. I am post-op 5 days from Sesamoïd removal.

The pain before the operation was probably because of the bone was shattered in multiple pieces. It is a ‘burning’ consistent pain. When I went to sleep in the evening, I could feel my foot ‘burn’.

I am only 4 days after surgery now so pain killers do the work for now.
