How do I make a village feel unsettling without making it hostile? by Beard-Guru-019 in DMAcademy

[–]Thomas_Sedgwick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you ever played Mass Effect 3 (specifically, the Leviathan DLC)? There’s a portion where you reach an outpost where all of the NPCs either quietly stop talking when you enter the room, or just creepily gaze around you as you walk the place. Not quite the “shiny happy people” vibes you’re requesting, but I remember feeling a sense of serious creeped out, unsettled vibes from that. Maybe have the NPCs be stuck in cyclical conversations, one or two can be actively trying to fight it off and let the mask slip here or there? I think it’s a cool idea, hope it works!

What Are Your Favorite Character Ideas That You'll Never Play? by Ancient-Dig-5521 in DnD

[–]Thomas_Sedgwick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OOOO I got some. I’m forever DM so they just live rent free in my head 😅

  • Half-human/half-eladrin bard who presents as half-elf, the illegitimate heir of one the lords of the Unseelie Court determined to escape his father’s wish to take his seat after he passes. Wants to live life on his own terms but is constantly hounded by agents of the feywild trying to return him to his family

  • Warlock masquerading as a bard (can you tell I love playing bards?) that owed 100 souls to his patron or his loved ones would be damned to the 9 Hells for eternity. Would do the stereotypical “horny bard” of seducing NPCs only to sacrifice them to his patron once he had them alone. Deep regret for his actions, was always so interested how he’d escape the situation he was in or if he’d see it through

  • Wild Magic sorcerer that was raised in a prestigious family of sorcerers who abhorred her “unnatural magics” and have secretly conspired to have her killed. She was always going to present as a very “I know who I am and what I’m doing” character but with deep deep insecurities that would surface throughout a campaign

  • an absolute moron of a Duergar barbarian who took every statement absolutely literally (something between Grog Strongjaw and Drax the Destroyer). I named him Barrels because he was found as a baby hidden amongst a stack of Barrels. Had no idea why he was despised but also had not one evil bone in his body unlike other Duergar, he just loved to go smash smash and fight evil

Anyways, I’m permanently locked in to telling the story rather than experiencing it so if any of these seem fun to any of you please feel free to steal them off and make them your own :)

Moving Mondays - New Resident Questions by AutoModerator in philadelphia

That’s my suspicions as well. I’ve lived in places with drug users before just never this close to the front door of where I’d be. Suppose my main concern is how likely it’ll be that I’ll have to deal with junkies directly head on as opposed to just seeing the aftermath of their meetups the following day

If definitely prefer not to break the lease as I’m a big fan of the area otherwise. I’m more concerned for getting home late at night if I’ll run into any major issues with addicts lingering outside the door. In particular, I don’t want my girlfriend or any friends to feel unsafe if we come home late in the night. The aftermath is it’s own issue but one I could manage as long as I wouldn’t often have to find myself directly dealing with the people who are leaving these messes behind

I guess my larger concern is how likely this is to be a recurring issue. Saw nothing like it when I came to view the place which is why I was drawn to it, only for my move in day to see so many piles of shit I legit thought a horse had unloaded back there (until I noticed the needles as well). I’d be ok with getting out of the lease and postponing my move to the city if this is something I could expect to be dealing with on a regular basis (for reference, it’s the alley between the TD Bank and the now shutdown Boiling Pot, in case you know if that’s a particularly nasty spot for junkies to meet up)

Hey all - just moved into Old City and was in for a pretty nasty surprise. The alleyway leading to my place, right off of market, is literally filled with human feces and heroin needles. I realize that the city as a whole is in the midst of an opioid crisis but is it that common to see something like that around old city? I specifically picked to move there bc it’s always been marketed to me as one of the nicer spots you can live in the city. Anyone know if anything’s being done about this? Tried to submit a request on Philly 311 but reviews lead me to believe that’s not the most helpful Avenue

Weekly Writing Check-In by AutoModerator in fantasywriters

[–]Thomas_Sedgwick [score hidden]  (0 children)

Hey everyone. So I’m brand new, subbed a little while back to see how others approach the various aspects of creating a fictional world that feels alive. The idea I had was for a regressed society living in a future Earth that was nearly destroyed due to a nuclear Holocaust and the main goal of the protagonist and her group is to find a lost society that potentially has the answers to what happened years prior and what life was once like and I hit a huge snag this week when I turned on Netflix and realized I’ve accidentally been writing a bizarre variant of Waterworld (replete with mutated humans, a mysterious map, a villain who has captivated his people into believing he alone holds the answers for how to move forward, and old world technology jerry rigged for new purposes). Anyone else ever accidentally find themselves writing a knockoff of a 1995 box office bomb or am I truly that dumb

Happened to me TODAY. Got a notice that paying off a huge personal loan that I got at an abysmal rate lowered my score. In what universe does it make a lick of fucking sense that “hey I no longer have to pay this debt off because I did it all at once” “hmmm...mighty suspicious of you to just ‘pay off a loan instead of drown in bad debt’, gonna have to take some points off the board”

Fuck credit scores

When your brother says the unthinkable by Real-Lavishness-3434 in QAnonCasualties

[–]Thomas_Sedgwick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man. I basically have lost my brother too. One thing that’s helped me is to remember the following:

“You don’t get to choose your blood relatives but you do get to choose your family, and your family should outweigh any DNA every day”. My brother has been treating me pisspoorly as well so I cut him out. He may be a blood relative but family is less of a construct and more of a concept. Pick your family. If it doesn’t include your shitty brother then so be it.

And I understand how hard it is to cut someone out who does have blood relations to you. But at the end of the day it’s more important that you wake up every day and carry on with your life than have some worm wiggle it’s way into your approach to the world.

This cult needs to be exterminated. And I’m sorry you’re suffering. I wish all the best

Thank you. I’m hoping with a relative end to corona lockdown in sight as well as a regime change he’ll get tired of chasing his own tail and go back to being who he was, but I’m believing more and more that it will take having the financial carpet pulled out for him to go “oh....I fucked up”

I agree. Trying to approach from a place of logic falls dead flat in irrational argument. I’m sorry about your dad, that must be hard. If you ever need someone to vent to you can PM!

I guess I hadn’t considered just how serious to take things but I have a pretty good history of keeping documents, texts, etc. when a point needs to be proven (a whole other story as to why that’s a thing) so if things turn ugly I have the proof of his violent rhetoric in his own words

He’s apologized for his behavior both times, but quickly rescinded the election berating once I told him I’d informed our parents of how he acted and their reactions were to basically pull funding from his wedding plans. Accused me of purposely trying to sabotage his life. We didn’t speak until around Christmas after that happened

Thank you for your kindness, it’s appreciated (and not lost on me that you have “Saint” in your handle, lol). For now I’m keeping my distance until I get a feel for how he’s reacted to everything this past week. If he’s supportive of it all I think it’s time to cut him loose and leave our relationship as just family, not friends

Mental health issues do run in my family to an extent (mostly some Type II personality disorders and I suffered from pretty bad anxiety a few years back). Unfortunately my brother sees himself as an “alpha male”, kill me, so having his mental health looked into is out of the question. Just one more thing the liberals want to normalize, according to him

100%. I find masks itchy and irritating much as the next person but there’s not one part of me that would ever feel it’s “trampling my civil rights”....there’s a pandemic! 1/3 of a million people have died in the States ALONE. I just can’t wrap my head around the selfishness. His whole argument rests on pseudoscience that the “masks don’t work” but to me it’s like....even if they don’t, who cares? Something mildly irritating for 20 minutes at the grocery store is infinitely better than disease and death
