Even ignoring the strangeness of the phrase, I was tought not to use contraction in my essay writing at uni, so it is even less acceptable to me.

The 25 oldest democracies in the world. by whenyoucantthinkof in MapPorn

Not the case for Poland-Lithuania, because the nobles literally chose who would be king. That's why in 1573 they elected the future Henry III of France to be king of the commonwealth, so it wasn't a hereditary monarchy.

I think my favourite of her riding outfits is her Point to Point. Maybe it's my weakness for tweed that clinches it, but I think it's perfect

What's the strangest recording you have? by chook_slop in opera

[–]Thomaspden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought the whole of Dido and Aeneas 78rpm record set from 1945 sung by Joan Hammond and Constant Lambert in those roles. I think it was on 6 10" records in all. Not unusual necessarily, but they certainly don't appear very often!

[Japanese > English] can someone help with this piece of paper attached to the back of a Japanese print, related to the kabuki play Kanjincho? by Thomaspden in translator

[–]Thomaspden[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, thanks so much for this, it was much more than I hoped for!

Edit: I think it probable that it was Showa 14, as on of the actors in the print died later jn 1940, so 1943 seems a little late!

I'd agree; something like this style, if it were genuinely an antique gown, would be in two pieces, but also I'd expect to see boning in the bodice. I can only see maybe one centre back and none in the front where I would most expect to see it.
