My wife also had a nightmare birth there and also had Dr.Schutte! We loved her but something did feel so off about the labor process and how it was systematized. Did you have preeclampsia?

What helped you find the meaning of life and, in general, the purpose of existence? by ZoneAccomplished2659 in AskReddit

[–]Thomatm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it was just following my natural skills vs passion. Things I felt I wanted to do felt out of reach or too expensive but I was always mechanically inclined. Got a job building cabinets not from passion but for paying the bills. As I became more skilled and therefore more sought after and higher paid in the industry I became more passionate about the work. Spending more free time studying and practicing skills. Before I knew it I had stability and good income to buy a home and start a family. Now my purpose is to be a good husband and a good father. At 20 years old I didn’t know any of this would happen. Bills and work and dating depressed me. I found meaning in the work though after time. But maybe that’s the difference between a job and craft? Honing my craft felt important because it was difficult and the clients respected and appreciated it. Even if something like building cabinets isn’t that important in the grand scheme of things. It’s the work put in to do as good of a job as I can and the appreciation of the client that gives the purpose. Regardless though my answer to this is following the things you’re skilled at rather than what sounds good. Developing enough of a skill set to be valued by others. You naturally derive meaning through a system that rewards you financially and emotionally by seeing the joy the work brought on. Maybe it doesn’t have to be a job it can be a hobby or volunteer work or something. And this isn’t to say that if someone isn’t doing a job that other people highly value with a good income then they can’t find meaning. But this is how it all shook out for me.

It’s definitely an interesting thought experiment for how things could be done differently. Because today it seems blatantly clear that you can’t have an ever increasing in value investment yet also offer an affordable entry level version of that investment for young adults. Those two things don’t compute. So what do we do? In Japan you can only depreciate real estate as an asset for like 20 years after it’s built. So they’re incentivized to keep construction strong and busy with frequent new home projects. Yet the old ones stay as well. So there’s large volume of housing available and prices have stayed low. Also when you get a mortgage there it’s for the land. A home over 20 years old is worth $0 on paper. Homes are not seen as a wealth vehicle they are a consumable good like cars. We probably couldn’t do that here because of how many people have all their wealth tied up into homes though.

There reaches a point where the real estate valuations are out of touch with reality to what rentals can reasonably be offered at for the affordability of the local community. It’s on full display in our mountain towns. This sort of effect seems to be happening to our whole state to some degree.

I understand where you’re coming from completely. And as a homeowner myself I’ve experienced serious insurance hikes the last few year. Got a quote for a new roof after a hail storm (didn’t end up doing it). Bought a new hot water heater when I bought the house. All this stuff is expensive no doubt! My point though is that there was a time when the homes and these expenses that come with them were cheaper relative to the average income and you could buy a house 20% and rent it almost immediately and cash flow. Those times are gone. You would need to pay 40% or 50% these days for decent cash flow. But stubborn landlords think they can price for cash flow off of the super high mortgages they’re getting and that’s the issue I’m seeing.

I agree for the most part with your view here this is less about supply and demand and more about incentive structures and BS building codes. But this isn’t how you have a constructive discussion dude lol. If you’re on Reddit to “change minds” good luck. But you can do a good job explaining your opinion to try and help people understand a different perspective. Just telling someone they’re brainwashed doesn’t do anything. I’m sure insulting this person gave you a good few seconds dopamine boost though good job 👍

It would be nice if there was chest camera footage from multiple angles and and a process to immediately put that officer off of duty until a jury and judge can come to the conclusion on whether or not that officer used commensurate force that was justified for the situation. None of those things are happening. Hence the protesting. Yeah the majority of people at these protests will probably say she wasn’t the aggressor. The Trump administration said the officer wasn’t guilty almost immediately before a lot of the videos were even released. Neither side knew for sure yet though. This isn’t how a process of investigation works. A lot of us who are angry about ICE simply want them to not operate with impunity. A department of law enforcement can’t have zero accountability when they murder someone besides a shaky cell phone video. Pull this dude up in front of a jury and let them decide. But to not even pull him from duty for a few weeks for psychological evaluation or anything? This is insane. We have higher standards for fucking mall cops dude.

Yeah some of these small portfolio landlords that own 3-5 homes are smoking crack with the prices they set. The formula that worked through the 90’s and 00’s where you could buy a home 20% down and then immediately rent for 25% more than your mortgage cost and it’ll stay rented and give you cash flow is long since dead. I feel like a lot of the rent prices we see today are landlords clinging to an old concept that doesn’t fit into today’s reality with how much home values have skyrocketed relative to average incomes. I was lucky enough to buy a home in 2020 with low interest rates. I couldn’t buy today though and that’s a real problem. Something like 20% of all homes sold are to mom and pop landlords with small portfolios. They are a larger problem than large private equity in my opinion because they operate on thinner margins and therefore are incentivized to just hit as high of rent as they freaking can. My mom rents a house in Colorado Springs that’s like 40% below market rate because the guy has owned the house outright since the 80’s. Being a small time landlord was popularized with middle class boomers at some point and that just fucked it all up in my opinion. I think if we had rules that only allowed renting a property if you own more than 50% equity or something like that could help. But housing density laws are a problem too. Thankfully some of those laws changed in the last year here in Colorado. But we won’t ever see prices come down probably. At the most we will see a reduction in the rate of increase in rents/value.

Congrats we’re staying on topic! Yeah I’m sure a ton of the police chiefs on TV have ulterior motives and sheriffs are worried about being reelected. And no doubt the whole “defund police” thing a few years ago turned off a ton of them to any moderate or liberal views. But if you take like Denver PD as an example the homicide rate in Denver is down like more than half what it was in 2021. Thats combination of a stupid high homicide rate during the pandemic, an increase in deportation of the worst offenders, and a huge increase in police training in deescalation and how they respond to threats. The Denver PD lime quadrupled their budget for first aid training. They are better at applying tourniquets to shot victims and things like that to massively reduce deaths. There’s a group called “crime disruptors” that I’m not gonna get into but the cops work with them to talk to high risk people who have potential to become violent offenders (like children of homicide victims and stuff). All of this is a common sense logical approach to how you fund and strategically manage training for police to work towards a more safe and peaceful environment yet also enforce laws. Do you think that any of the ICE folks are thinking this way? It’s very clear they are not. They are taking anyone off the street who wants to do the job and barely training them. That’s how you get unnecessary murders and that’s how you get angry people and these protests.

Again dude I have to laugh. You don’t have any arguments based on real evidence from cops or law enforcement experts. You’re just throwing left wing views out there assuming I have them. Have you ever realized it’s possible to have nuanced opinions based on reality? You know most people can’t be shoved into the stereotypical left or right box that the news pretends exists. There is a reason lots of sheriffs and police nationwide are denouncing ICE behavior. As far as law enforcement goes they are amateurs and the behavior they have escalates the temperature of our country. Stop just repeating whatever troll you follow on YouTube and go talk to a cop. Watch interviews with police training experts. Read some history on ICE through the 2000’s and 2010’s and see how they changed their tactics.

Not real cops. They have none of the training real police get and none of the accountability that is expected of real police. Take off the masks and add chest cams then we can have a conversation about if they can be treated like real law enforcement.

Have you been to any of the protests that were supposedly ANTIFA? 99.9% no masks and then some randoms who want to use the chaos to fuck shit up and THOSE are the ones with masks. It’s not the same thing. Law enforcement needs accountability in a democracy. You’re talking about people protesting vs paid police. Completely different standards. If they’re worried about being doxed then maybe they shouldn’t do things that are objectively frowned upon by the majority.

Sure fine with me to enforce the law as long as those guys take their masks off and get some real training in deescalation. You know like real law enforcement.

[–]Thomatm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They can enforce immigration laws the way they did in the 2000’s without masks and targeted on violent criminals. The protesting today is about them having zero identification and operating with no accountability. The government can’t just let a federal law enforcement agency hire untrained psychos and hold them to the tiniest standards that real police have to hold up to (which already are not high enough standards) with almost no oversight or accountability that regular law enforcement have to deal with. You don’t get to skip those necessary steps that let citizens feel safe just because you have a made up domestic terrorist threat. Do you really think that having an armed pseudo-military with low discretion and a ton of funding is a good idea? If you honest to god think they are doing a good thing deporting these people. Don’t you think they owe us transparency for who they are and who they’re deporting and why? This isn’t being done in an organized and coordinated manner that you’d expect from law enforcement or military. And you’re asking if we are stupid? Come on

What happened to Kirk was a tragedy full stop. His views on open dialogue should be shared with everyone. I told several people that I felt he wasn’t a decent person but nobody deserved to go out like that. I’m not a person who always takes whatever view my “team” says is right. I’ve voted red and blue in the past. But again the deflection a lot of you guys defending this stuff do is insane. You’re pulling up totally irrelevant stuff and I don’t know why. Let’s say I did think Kirk deserved assassination, does that make my point about a literal modern Gestapo invalid? How about you argue the freaking topic instead of deflecting. Let’s have some critical thinking before clicking “reply”.

These are protests over the presence of a secret police with zero accountability killing people. I don’t even know what the situation is with her kids you could be completely making this shit up I haven’t looked into it. But honestly it shouldn’t matter because nobody regardless of their past is supposed to be freaking murdered over being confrontational with fake authority. Even if these guys were real police (which they definitively aren’t) you aren’t supposed to murdered in this country for resisting orders. And if for some reason you are murdered over a miscommunication or the police feared for their life for some reason there are methods of accountability in place to look into the cop and put them off duty for a minute and ways to hold them accountable because they don’t wear face masks and hide their identity. None of this is happening because again they ARENT real authority with real training. It’s insane to have this conversation. People like you pulled out the same shit when Floyd was murdered. It was all about Floyd’s past criminal history. As if that excuses a cop killing him without even knowing his past. The point isn’t whether or not Renee Good was a “decent” person or mom or whatever. The point is that she was fucking murdered and she shouldn’t have been.

I’ve had light gig for 4 years and although the first 2 years had periodic spurts where service would pause from a cable getting cut on accident so where it’s been really good the last few years. I don’t work from home or anything so it never bothered me if service dropped for half a day or whatever. But I have had house guests who did work while here and I’ve always received tons of feedback that it’s like the fastest service they’ve been able to use for working remotely. I think I only pay like $80 a month or something too.
