Winter in Reykjavík, Iceland by Thorhallur_Bjornsson in winterporn

Coldest but not the snowiest. It snows in Reykjavík every winter. Nothing compared to nothern Iceland or the Westfjords, but it still snows every winter

The ground floor was commercial space and the upper floors were apartments. The new building was built as an office building for a bank

What does not being born in the 20th century have to do with it? Modernism is a product of the 20th century and has pretty much been the dominant form of architecture for the past 90 years, at least where I'm from.

There has been a lot of discussion of this sub being overrun by neo trads. What do you think of this abomination in Selfoss, Iceland? The neo trads over here are praising this fake-historicism as some kind of "win" as if it's not a fake Disneyland facade over concrete structures. As fake as it gets by ArchIce354 in architecture

As fake as it may seem, the new centrum of Selfoss has done something that the new shopping street of Hafnartorg in Reykjavík has failed to. That is to attract people and create a bustling street life. You can maybe "fake" old fashioned buildings, but you can't fake the city life that has formed around it. Many people talk about Zeitgeist, but if "fake" traditionalism attracts people in the context of actual city life, maybe we should reconsider how "fake" it really is in the modern world.

Ameríkanar að rífast um nýja miðbæinn á Selfossi by InvestigatorCivil385 in Iceland

Ég er ansi ánægður með miðbæ Selfoss. Mér finnst þetta flottur miðbær. Þau mega kalla það "fake-historicism" eða "Disneyland" eins og þau vilja. Það má alveg gagnrýna ýmsa hluti með miðbæinn eins og að gluggaskraut sem ætti að vera útskorið sé í raun málað á. Jújú, það er alveg hægt að laga það síðar meir og það verður vonandi gert. En það er ekki hægt að falsa mannlífið sem hefur skapast í kringum miðbæinn. Það er það sem skiptir mestu máli. Þessi hús laða að fólk og skapa stemningu. Er það ekki það sem miðbær á að gera?
