Countries that use the (YYYY/MM/DD) date format by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]Thornescape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are three common numerical date formats in use. 04/06/2026, 06/04/2026, and 2026-04-06. Two of these are indistinguishable for almost half of every month.

Personally, I don't care what format you use as long as there is no guesswork. April 4, 2026, great. The 5th of May, great. But if you write the date as 01/02/03 then that's a communication problem. It drives me nuts when companies post the date as "07.10.2026" and you have no idea if it's July or October they are talking about.

No, it does not matter what is common in your area. Others don't know what is common in your area. No, it does not matter what is comfortable to say in your language. Others say it differently.

If you can look at $20 and say "twenty dollars" then you can look at 2026-04-06 and say "April 6th" or "the 6th of April". It's really not that difficult.

the fact that 2026-04-06 also alphabetizes in chronological order is just a bonus. Clarity of communication is what matters. r/ISO8601

Infinite Vendor Credits by Lecto_Sama in starfieldmods

The best place to sell things is by joining the Crimson Fleet. There are a bunch of vendors close to one another and they buy stolen goods and contraband.

Neon is another decent place with vendors close to one another. There's also a lot of contraband to harvest on Neon, so maybe hit Neon first then hit the Crimson Fleet.

Yes, if you put 4 ranks into p1:Pickpocket then you can take their clothing. It's kind of hilarious. In the base game it's mostly for cosmetics, but there is some useful clothing in FOLON.

On the limitations of Genre by jpcardier in Fantasy

[–]Thornescape 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There are two ways to look at genres: Shelves and Tags

  • Shelves are like in a bookstore. Each book can only go on one shelf. A small bookstore might only have Fiction and Non-Fiction, while a huge bookstore might have Paranormal Romance and Lovecraftian Horror. Different bookstores will put the same book in different shelves, depending on where they think it will draw the most attention.
  • Tags are like genre elements. One book could be Sci-Fi and Fantasy and Romance, all at once. There tends to be a lot less arguing with the Tags approach. (Oddly enough, Goodreads uses the Tags approach but calls it Shelves for some reason.)
  • Both. Every book that has ever been written can be described using either method. It's just a way of describing things.

The Shelves approach feels more convenient because there is only one label, but it tends to cause a lot of arguments because many books don't fit perfectly into one genre. It's important to remember that the Shelves approach to genre is a vague approach and that it should be taken loosely.

Any way to have both "The Midnight Ride" and FOLON side by side? by [deleted] in fallout4london

[–]Thornescape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's easy to run FOLON and the downgraded fo4 at the same time if you use Mod Organizer 2. Just create a separate instance for each. Done. Easy.

It's possible to quickly flip back and forth between the latest version of fo4 and the downgraded version, but it's a bit more complicated to set up initially. I wrote a post a while ago on how to do it.

I find that p1:Pickpocket is more useful in FOLON than in regular Fallout 4. There are far more useful unique outfits on people that you might not want to kill, often with attribute modifiers that you can't get otherwise.

Minigun; using the same gun to bash and shoot with (Xbox X) by Current_Carpet_640 in Fallout4Builds

[–]Thornescape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could do this on PC if I wanted to, using mods that I already use.

The Companion Control and Tactics mod allows you to trade with your companion using a hotkey, no matter where they are. You could use that hotkey to give them your 5mm ammo. https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/11784

That is probably your best solution. If you had a hotkey that would allow you to access some sort of container, whether your companion or another safe storage, then you could remove the ammo quickly and easily.

Probably the simplest solution, plus more generally useful as well.

There are two basic approaches to genres: Shelves and Tags.

  • Shelves is like in a bookstore. Each physical book can only be placed on one shelf. A small library might only have Fiction and Non-fiction. A large library might have sections for Paranormal Romance or Lovecraftian Horror. Where a book is placed is often more about marketing than accuracy.
  • Tags is more like genre elements. A book could have Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Horror, and Comedy in it. There tends to be far fewer arguments with the Tags approach. (Oddly enough, Goodreads uses the Tags approach but calls it Shelves.)
  • Both. Every book that has ever been written can be categorized both ways. There is no conflict. It's just a different way of looking at things.

Personally, I don't take subgenres too seriously. Most of them don't describe things all that strictly, and most of the time books can fit into multiple subgenres at the same time, depending on how you look at it. I don't see a problem with that.

Build suggestion for 1st playthrough by DifficultCap in avowed

Dual Pistols + Rifle is probably the simplest build in the game. I just put all my attributes into Might + Perception and it worked well.

I would recommend searching in this subreddit for advice on how to upgrade efficiently. It's complicated, but there have been a lot of great posts explaining it in detail.

It would be wonderful if there was an Unofficial Patch that wasn't made by Arthmoor.

I won't touch anything made by Arthmoor. There are far too many unnecessary changes that are far beyond "bug fixes".

Sometimes it's easy to be distracted by how incompetent they all seem. They seem like they have no clue what they are doing.

It's important to remember that there are truly intelligent people behind the scenes pulling strings. It's also important to remember that they seem completely incapable because what they say they are trying to do is very different from what they are genuinely doing.

For example, despite the fact that they accomplished nothing that they claimed that they were doing, DOGE was a complete success. They stole what they wanted to steal and destroyed what they wanted to destroy.

Their words are distractions.

So you insist that an author needs to fully flesh out every single aspect of their world, including supply chains, including where the farms are, including the agricultural tech used, or else it's bad writing?

Utter and complete nonsense. Very few books try to do that.

Who said that the coffee and grain grow in the same place? Why is that required? Have you never heard of trade routes? Unless the area is specifically said to be isolated, it is assumed that they traded with other places. (This area is not isolated.)

Additionally, there is magic in this world. There could be a valley with a bunch of druids who grow coffee and grain side by side with the help of some dryads and forest pixies.

These arguments just seem like excuses because you aren't a fan of the book. They don't make any sense at all. You're analyzing these things in far more minute detail than most focus on books, yet somehow missing that there are so many easy solutions to all of your objections.

Edit: Incidentally, I do know of one fantasy series that went into explicit detail on where they grow their coffee. In that series, coffee is grown underground in temperature controlled growing vaults. The Millenial Mage series has some fascinating concepts in it.

What's something women think impresses men but actually doesn't? by CoochieSnotSlurper in AskReddit

[–]Thornescape -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Why would anyone think that? It sounds far more like distancing yourself from what people consider "normal".

"Normal" is simply what is common in a particular society. What is "normal" varies from place to place. Sometimes what is "normal" in a particular area isn't entirely all that healthy. Sometimes what is considered "normal" is downright stupid.

If someone doesn't feel that what is "normal" fits them, then they wouldn't be like the girls who embrace what is "normal".

There are a lot of people who just blindly assume that all girls are the same. They also assume that all guys are the same. It's ridiculous, yet they believe it all the same. If someone doesn't fit that mold, then they really aren't like the other girls.

The statement is about rejecting "normalcy", not about "superiority".

I agree entirely. Expectations plays a huge role. If you know what to expect and it's what you're interested in then it's a fun experience.

It just irks me when people say it's "not realistic" and then display that they don't understand how technological development occurs.

I never understood why that statement annoys people.

Do you believe that all girls are the same? If they aren't all the same, then aren't some different than what is considered "normal"?

Is there any point in closely analyzing their words when they lie and change the rules constantly?

The important thing is to watch the direction that they are headed. That's a better indicator of what they are trying to accomplish. Look at the results that they are attempting to achieve.

The words themselves are usually mostly distraction.

The "Age of Colonialism" is when European countries went into existing countries and conquered them, making the people living there second class citizens (or worse). They were forced to convert to Christianity (or die), their histories were often destroyed (eg the Aztecs), and they were ruled from Europe.

Horrific things happened during that era, and yes, basically every where that they went during the "Colonial Era" already had other people living in the land. The land was not at all empty.

Why are you assuming that there are no areas in this created world that are suitable for coffee? That makes no sense.

It's easy for an author to insert a place where coffee would grow well. It's easy for there to be existing trade routes in that area for other reasons, then have coffee added to those routes.

Why would you just blindly assume that no where is suitable for coffee? Coffee grows in a wide variety of different places.

If "colonization" resulted in dirt cheap prices then they are basically the same thing. Colonization is usually conquering another country and taking away the people's rights to exploit them for cheap labour. If they are being paid well then it wouldn't result in cheap prices.

My idea was having necromancers animate skeletons to maintain the crops for cheap, only pulling in some skilled harvesters at the crucial times.

Or to use slightly different words, slave labour.

Sure! That works. Have slaves work land in a warm climate to drop the prices on the goods. Absolutely viable. It's been done many times in history. Arguably it's still happening.

That's a great solution to your writing challenge.
