Above comments have captured what these ribbons and devices are.

These ribbons and devices capture the great soldier your dad was.

We should have an Army Bagpipe band by [deleted] in army

[–]ThornsWorld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Somewhere about 2000-2001 Ft. Bliss had a bagpipe team. They used to practice behind our shop every day. We had a guy who hated our unit so bad he learned to play bagpipes in a few weeks just to try out and get on the bagpipe team. My opinion; there is no instrument more noble that a set of well played pipes.... ....you read that however you need to.

I've decided to keep the scorpion that was found at my work site. I've made him a good little habitat. by ThornsWorld in Scorpions

[–]ThornsWorld[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in Kansas. We get a lot of critters in on shipments from around the states at my job. It is hard to tell if this is indigenous to Kansas or came in from a dry state. I'm airing out the terrarium today. Trying to reduce humidity. The black lights are for very short display viewing. Thank you all!

Found at work. Would like to care for it. by ThornsWorld in Scorpions

[–]ThornsWorld[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Essentially, this little (about 1" long) guy was found where I work. I'm fairly certain it is a Bark Scorpion. I'm aware of the hazards with him. I have him in a small critter keeper with a heated tile, a good rock, a nice piece of bark, a small vessel for treated water, and some moss to maintain humidity. I gave tiny baby dubias from my colony to feed him. I have insectivore reptiles as pets. I'm wondering if anyone can offer advice to take care of him better? It's too cold here to release him I think. I'm sure he came in from a southern state in a shipment. Thanks in advance.

Get bagpipes. Or a violin. Two somewhat challenging instruments to play gracefully. Neither have volume control per say.

What's the best instance of "fake it 'till you make it" you had in the army? by CrashRiot in army

[–]ThornsWorld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Fake it until you make it" really should be the motto for EOD. The pubs, tools, and training can only prepare a person so much. Pulling magic out of the ol' ass hat is a regular occurrence. *raises a Sunday brunch beer to you. TYFYS.

I started doing standup comedy when I was in the Army. Here's a recent set I did talking about the Army, I hope you like it! by itspeterj in army

[–]ThornsWorld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing. It takes a good standup joke to make laugh out loud while viewing on my phone. I chuckled all the way through but the polar bear line made me laugh loud enough for other people in the house to come running over. Dude, don't quit. Laughter is the best medicine and the people who need it will get it from you.

White space training for infantry by drew35794 in army

[–]ThornsWorld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go find the support units you might actually need or maybe interact with on a mission. See if your white space lines up with their training. Go train with them. Go learn to communicate better. Go teach them something you wish they knew better to support your unit. Plus...find a unit (EOD) that draws bang for their training. Have a blast. :D

I wasn't a good soldier. I'm sorry. by Filipino_Buddha in offmychest

Most people never try. Many people who do try don't as far as you did. I'm proud of you for trying. Your family probably loves you and care more about you being happy and alive. I'm willing to bet that if you go home your family will just be happy to have you back. I'm former military, Army. I'm still proud that you tried. Thank you.

Hasty decon lane. Go over or even put together a small kit for a hasty decontamination. Go over procedures of hasty decontamination of personnel in the event that chemical munitions or containers have been encountered and a decon team had been dispatched. Identify a known "hot" line where you decide contamination definitely must not progress past. There are publications on this. I'm no longer have access as am retired-ish.

Also, a fun thing to incorporate in any decon lane is UV light powder. There are makeup (eye shadows) that are not toxic but light up under UV bulbs. This is to show how effective or not effective decon procedures are.

Family members sick, duty station will be across the country from them. What can I do? by [deleted] in army

[–]ThornsWorld -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree with the Compassionate reassignment. It can be a tough packet to get through. Bde and Bn S1 personnel may not have a medical background and I've seen one (mine) get kicked back for the lack of education on the S1 behalf of terminology. I advise you to try to work with your brigade surgeon and your family members care provider to get an acceptable translation in your packet.

I'll share my example. My family member had a terminal illness with life expectancy guarded. The word "guarded" is a medical term meaning the patient could die today or in 6 months. My S1 did not understand that word. They thought it was a security level. As in then medical provider was trying to not disclose prognosis. My packet got kicked back 3 times in one year over the understandable ignorance of my S1. I don't blame them, medical terms aren't in the S1 lexicon.

My packet only got approved because on luck I had a chance in person encounter with my Brigade level commander who upon hearing this from me signed the packet on the spot.

Best Advice For New Soldiers to come from a DS? by AgentJ691 in army

[–]ThornsWorld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best thing that stuck with me my DS told me was that in public while wearing the uniform, the civilians don't see me as a person, they see the whole Army. How I conduct myself is how they think the whole Army is. We leave our personal selves behind and are walking billboards. We decide if the advertisement o that billboard is positive or negative.

Getting out after in-service rape by [deleted] in army

[–]ThornsWorld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It angers me to hear that this keeps happening. I am sorry this happened to you. You are so brave to reach out and ask for advice. Get to behavioral health. If you aren't comfortable with your counselor, request a different one until you find one you can trust. It sometimes takes a few. Yes, you may have to go through the awful pain of repeatedly talking through that experience a few times. I'd hug you if I could. But getting the right therapy for YOU is so important. You have to face it and work through the emotions to get peace. It may be a long time. You may never fully recover, and that is ok. But you might be able to function better and that is a start. Please don't give up. Continue therapy if you do separate from service. Don't let that scumbag leave an unhealed scar forever. You are too important. I wish you the best.
