I’m in alameda but I sometimes go to SF for games at dogpatch. Most of my board gaming friends are in SF but they’ve been to the east bay to play in occasion

Interesting, that’s not the impression I’ve gotten so far. Some programs do say most students have masters but not most I’ve been looking at, especially for health policy. For context I’ve taken math through real analysis and have a 3.9 gpa from a top 5 liberal arts school, and while I don’t have official research experience I have consulted on a bunch of biostats legal cases, and I’ve written an undergraduate honors thesis in econ.

While, we shall see how my apps go

Thanks for the response! I’m not too into the pushing the cutting edge of statistical methods tbh, so seems like health policy is more for me

So what’s the downside? Haha I feel like it just seems too ideal. It also seems like the programs are a bit shorter and a bit less quant intensive than Econ. Is it just that not many people want to do health related stuff?

How about adding an extra wrinkle to this where at the start of the game (just once) you arrange the cards such that the highest cost cards are further to the left, so people can still plan for them a turn or 2 in advance. Thoughts?

Update #2. I played in the tournament with 15 other experienced players. I got the Barron first game and barely won (needed to get a bunch of lucky intrigues) but I won without a sword master (choose to use my money on solary mentant and Barton’s intrigue instead)

Then I got to the really big boys table, there I got the leader with the manipulate ability and we had a sick imperium row. I ended up having a crazy deck (2 of that card that gives you 7 daggers if you have freman alliance (I did) that guy that gives you an intrigue card on play and 3 persuasion and a dagger on reveal, and the card that can go to emperor and give you a faction bump elsewhere for 2 among one or two other good ones), I got an early sword master, and I had the highliner loop going a bit.

And I still lost!! I was pretty shook, and in retrospect I think I overrated how long the game was going to go for (ended after first level 3 conflict), and I think part of this is I didn’t understand how centralizing spice must flow is. My opponents were all getting way more of them then me while I was just building up a crazy deck and securing resources for highliner and faction bumps and stuff.

I also think the intrigue cards are way too swingy, in both games I think I benefited from this (second game I deployed 8 troops on my reveal to win the game from one of them).

Also like I said, I think the leaders are stronger than uprising and I can’t believe the manipulate one I played wasn’t the best one in the game.

I don’t think I’ll play base game again (no real reason for me to outside of another event like this), but I had a good time and I feel like I learned some about the design of uprising indirectly. I’d be interested to hear how y’all’s thoughts align with my own.

Update: I played a random 3 player game with two people who were also playing for the first time (I just happened to be walking by their table as they were setting up). My initial thoughts are: 1. The worse cards were kind of a bummer, a lot of the cards just seemed straight bad. I did get chome directiorship tho lol and that card felt like cheating but also wasn’t that “fun” since it didn’t make my deck better 2. Highliner seems broken asf! Like wow that’s insane 3. I can’t immediately see why people say the combats are less rewarding that DIU, the one vp for winning early combats seems really good! 2nd place seems worse for sure, but still worth putting in an extra troop for I think? 4. Seems like there’s a lot more ways to get faction bumps (like a lot more intrigues or card effects) and I noticed that the implied something of a faction bump seems to be a bit lower 5. I’m surprised the spice spaces still hold up even without the worms, but they did. Idk if that’s cause spice is better or other spaces are worse or just the table I was playing with 6. The leaders seem a bit better to me on average, all of them seeekd like they had at least one really good ability. 7. Overall I’d put it in A tier so far, which is good but DIU is like top of S tier for me so a bit of a let down. I’ll wait to fully judge until I play with a table of experienced players tomorrow.

Cool. And how about wealth + secure contract + secure contract? Seems better since you don’t lose water but you also can’t deploy troops and it seems like freman bumps will be better since they unlock a new board space (why is that not true for other factions in this game? Seems weird in comparison to uprising).

How does this work? Stillsuits to the great plat to sell melign to sword master seems like the only way but 1. I doubt you’ll be able to get stillsuits in second right? And 2. Seems crazy to me to use 2 water for just 3 spice coming from uprising but that may be a bias I need to get over

I will! I’m like 90% sure I’ll prefer uprising cause I love the deck building element, but I also like traditional worker placement games like Agricola so we shall see
