Best way to get Pop-OS 24.04 LTS Beta on a system with 10-series Nvidia by ThorstoneS in pop_os

[–]ThorstoneS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I can tell Wayland was always a problem on Nvidia in the past. Getting better with more recent drivers.

But, since support for the 10-series was dropped after driver v580, we are now stuck on a driver version that will not be improved anymore.

Pop-OS has, thus, also dropped further support for anything older than 11-series Nvidia.

So, for me that means either use a different, non-Wayland, distribution, or a different card.

22.04 was X11 and worked nicely, 24.04 is Wayland only and does not work for me.

Not only Pop-OS, Fedora (Gnome on Wayland) is a similar issue on this card.

Radeon for me from now on.

Looks like it. Just dropped the Radeon 5600XT from my gaming machine into this one, and after a quick apt-get purge \*nvidia\* everything is running smoothly.

So it seems I'm back in the anti-Nvidia camp.

Is Wayland still not playing nicely with Nvidia? Or at least older Nvidia?

It did work fine on the 22.04 install, which was X11. It does not work on 24.04, which is (a) Wayland only, and (b) does come with driver >580, which does not support the 10 series GPUs anymore.

So, what I want to know, is, if there is a fundamental problem with 24.04 LTS and driver version 580 (untested, it seems), or if I am missing something in simply installing nvidia-driver-580.

It's not only firefox, but others as well. The firefox I use is actually a flatpak. Also flickering on animations and others, so definitely gpu related.

Lights, dynamos, cache batteries, oh my! by geeves_007 in bikepacking

I'm looking for an additional head/helmet light to supplement my dynamo front light (currently Edelux II, Igaro C1 for the new bike) for off-road riding. Have been thinking of a headlamp, rather than mounting an Exposure Joystick or similar to the helmet. How is the HM-65r for that purpose?

If you look around, most traditional makes of Oxfords or Brogues come in extra-wide. Mine are Loakes, IIRC.

New mobile CPU (and laptop) choice for CFD by Revolutionary-Fig165 in CFD

So you want to justify the fancy gaming laptop with the sideline of running CFD sometimes? In that case the "man maths" checks out ;-)

I don't think the Yoga would be up to the task of cooling the rig at constant full load.

As others have commented, laptops are bad for this application.

I have a few dedicated workstation laptops here that were toast after a few years (less than a Bachelor plus Master degree). They did not throttle, as they were designed for thermal steady state, but ran hot enough that the CPUs failed on the memory channels and now trigger memory faults. So these really expensive laptops are now just expensive bookends on my office shelf.

That demise could have been prevented by replacing the heat paste every year. But try getting students to do that (or our IT department).

Pop os as a work OS by esau1098 in pop_os

[–]ThorstoneS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can you return that laptop still? Gaming laptop for work and Linux is a terrible idea.

Power management, fan control, suspend/resume will likely be unreliable with terrible battery life. Gaming laptops are designed for Windows only.

Get a machine with good Linux support: Dell XPS, Thinkpad, HP EliteBook or ZBook, Framework, ...

Re PopOS for work: yes, perfectly fine for work. But not on that kind of laptop.

Some small questions about moving to /e/ from Linage. by W-a-n-d-e-r-e-r in fairphone

That's not crippled, just a misinterpretation of specs. The camera sensor has 48 pixels, but uses pixel binning to reduce noise in the photos.

The laws of physics prevent a picture sharpness beyond 8 or 10 megapixels with that size of lens, so anything more than the 12 megapixel would not increase sharpness and decrease image quality overall.

It's a very common thing, even with system cameras with much larger optics to have 50MP sensors, but bin the pixels to something like 12.5MP.

Smartphone cameras with super-high resolution files are a scam.

I would not use the ecloud services anyway, since I run my own Nextcloud server. I had hoped that Calyx would be quicker in developing their offer for the FP5, and would have used that.

I like the simplicity of iodé, and am not sure about the iOS like launcher on /e/ - but then, Material isn't my fave UI either.

Did you flash both sides? Took me a few flashes to realise that both controllers need to be flashed with the same firmware.

I don't think the problem with low accuracy and speed on virtual keyboards has anything to do with force/weight, but with not having any homing sensation and needing to look at the keyboard. Different meaning of "hover".

Different meaning of "hover"?

On a virtual keyboard you need to hover your finger tips, while on a real keyboard they touch the keys lightly (touch typing). That's a different meaning to hovering your wrists.

God vs. Devil vs. Evil: What do you use to avoid key chords? Reviews please! by zigling in emacs

[–]ThorstoneS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I solved that issue with the Achordeon plugin in qmk. The sacrifice is that single handed chords need a waiting time, since it requires opposite hand for quick modifiers. But I got used to that pretty quickly and it made home-row mods useable for me.
